Cybertrash in Paris

Sat Nov 10, 2018, 5:20 AM
Cybertrash is as much about the medium as it is about the message. And the message is : make trash a treasure. Don't just produce waste, tap into old devices and components and give them a glowing second life.

Hardware companies and their executives feel the need to showcase their hidden technological wonders and raise awareness of their lifecycle.
This is why CFE-CGC Metallurige, the main union of executives and managers from the industry, asked me to set up a Cybertrash exhibition in their headquarters.

Felix Baumgartner likes Cybertrash

While on vacation in Monaco, Felix Baumgartner acquired "Praktica" - a Cybertrash scupture made of vintage cameras - at Art Seiller gallery in Saint-Paul de Vence.

Long before digital cameras, the only way to experience the pure fun of (almost) instant photography was to get a Polaroïd.
Pictures were square, colors a bit dull but hey, you didn't have to wait for days to find out if the picture was good or total crap!
Now in 2015 there are still enthusiasts who use them for fun, and artists who see it as different way to express themselves.
In april there will be meetings and shows across France and other countries to pay tribute to this iconic little boxy camera, and especially a polaroid-based art show in Levallois-Perret :

My Cybertrash totem Impulse will be part of it!

I love electronic components. They're my raw material, they can be shiny, complex, beautiful.
Exxelia group make them. They're their product, they make them durable and efficient.
They make components state-of-the-art, I make them pieces of art.
We started working together not so long ago, and they decided to write an article about our collaboration in their in-house magazine Componews.
French readers, you can give it a read here  : tassou.com/fr/expos/componews_…

Once upon a time, in a western Europe country, there was an inspired sculptor.
He put so much soul and hard work in his sculptures that a famous fashion designer got one and liked it very much.
So much that he decided to make it the emblem of this new event he was designing.
Then the Prime Minister came to congratulate the sculptor, who became so famous that he he got a personal exhibition at the MoMA.

Sounds like a fairy tale, doesn't it?

Well, apart from the MoMA stuff, this is not too far from the truth. I'm really happy and proud that my artwork inspires Karl Lagerfeld, fashion designer of worldwide fame

And Jean-Marc Ayrrault, French Prime Minister

Antiques of the future, emblems of a crucial worldwide environment problem that begs for coordinated regulations, Cybertrash sculptures should inspire many people around the planet.
I hope they inspire you.

Texas Instruments is a big and innovative company. Everyone knows their good-looking scientific calculators, but do you know their components can be found in half of the world's mobile phones?
And that many of these components have been designed in France?
TI set foot on the French Riviera 50 years ago, and their R&D center in Villeneuve Loubet developped technological jewels such as the OMAP series.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of TI France, TI comissioned me to create a huge Cybertrash sculpture made of... phones, of course!
TI50 (fav.me/d3lhyhg) was then presented to senior executives of TI France, Europe and Worlwide.

The BIG Cybertrash Contest (news.deviantart.com/article/14…) has ended. As promised, all submitters will now get credit for their superb entries

First of all, a really nice deviation that would have given other submitters a good run for their money, had it been submitted on time:

"The nature of technology" by ~Hypholia

The nature of technology by Hypholia

Then, a fantastically detailed "Cybertrash book", by *Marenne. The steampunk grandfather of kindles and nooks

Cybertrash Book by BoekBindBoetiek

Now, a very elegant piece of Cybertrash jewelry by by ~Divulged, the "Red Cell Phone Necklace"

The pressure is building... as *Msmeakochan introduces a gorgeous, classy "Commemorative Cup". Solid Cybertrash piece, that one.

Commemorative Cup by Msmeakochan

And nooooow, please open your eyes wide for the winner...

I wouldn't have expected a piece of digital art to grab the first place, but it's sooo exquisitely crafted (mind you, it's vector), so cleverly composed that I couldn't resist : please give all your attention to `MyntKat and her "Cyber Flower"

She wins the contest and grabs "Module"
