There is something immensely important I need to talk about. It's very personal, but I really want to get it off my chest. I have Asperger's Syndrome.

For those of you who aren't aware, Asperger's a "high functioning" form of Autism. I'm still as intelligent as most people, but there are some areas I struggle in. I have very poor social skills, I may miss obvious communication cues, I may repeat what I say over and over, I may sound monotone and seemingly act without emotion, I even have trouble making eye contact. I may also have an obsessive attachment to certain subjects, even unusual subjects. I'm clumsy, and have trouble with specific motor skills. I'll have one-sided conversations and only talk about subjects I enjoy.
In school I have a hard time focusing on particular subjects. In fact, it's greatly afflicting me in college, where I have difficulty taking time off something I may obsess over and focus instead on homework. I managed in high school, but College is a whole other ballpark.
Asperger's, and Autism itself is relatively new to the medical front, and they're still trying to discover new ways to treat, and or suppress the symptoms. I'm sure that my diagnosis is reflected here on da. You'll often find me talking about Bioncle, Legos, Final Fantasy, television shows, and the like. If I repeat anything I say to any of you, or talk one-sided in conversation (or just about my interests), or even if I appear anti-social, it's likely because of my Asperger's.
I was given a diagnosis from one of my counselors during my sophomore year in High School. But for years, I never knew what it meant, or how it worked. Just earlier tonight I decided to do some research on the subject, and that is why I came here to talk about it. And like I said, it's highly personal. Really the purpose of this article is to inform you all, so you all may come to understand some of what I do socially and why.

In advance, I'd like to thank you all for listening, and I'm grateful for all the support you may give.
I know this is late at night, but I felt like a really needed to write this down somewhere.

I have quite a number of friends on the spectrum. It's a very common thing, I think more common than people realise because there's so many variations of it.
Good to see you're looking into it. I have a pastor friend who didn't know, until his 40s, that he had ADHD. After diagnosis and learning about it, it has made it "easier" for him work life around it.

Well, knowing about our situations help us adapt to our lifestyle. I've learned so much about myself since my diagnosis.

Basically, but I have been reading up on Asperger's. I feel for you though. I think Asperger's is still relatively new.

I think I misphrased. I thought the recognition and official diagnosis is relatively new, but not Asperger's or Autism itself.

Dude, if I was half the artist that you are, I'd talk about it to everyone I meet. That's a good way to meet new friends. Where do you do your art? If you do it all inside somewhere nobody will see, go outside or somewhere where there's a good steady stream of people. I had to do that for my art class last spring semester and there were a lot of people walking by that were interested in what we were doing. And add that to your way of passion that comes from you symptom, talk about what you are drawing and show anyone that comes by your other work.

Thanks for the compliment. Your idea could work. If anything, the most "public" places I create art in is usually when I doodle in class or on the bus. I have taken a few art classes, and I've had more professional discussions about my art (artist to artist). But most of those places are usually static when it comes to people.

Awesome, do what you makes you comfortable but move out of it bit by bit. That's what I kinda do myself. I've had to learn my lessons but I've benefited from them.

Ah. I have to say it was quite the revelation when I discovered what it really meant to have Asperger's.

Before I was diagnosed with Aspergers I was mis-diagnosed for years with ADD, so the medicine I was taking was not exactly helping me.

Yeah, I read how that could be a misdiagnosis. Before I was diagnosed with Asperger's no one knew why I was the way I was. We knew something was different since Elementary School, but none of the teachers could pin down what it was. I was diagnosed in High School where one of the school counselors recognized it. As far as I can tell, I never got any medicine to help, my family's struggling as it is with finances.

I remember in Elementary School I liked to draw things directly from my mind, but one of my teachers thought I was hallucinating!

I actually became one of the best artists in my Kindergarten class. I guess I can kind of understand why now. But I haven't been an easy kid to raise for my parents. They don't understand Asperger's too well or how to motivate me at times. I don't blame them in the slightest, I'm not sure what I would do in their position. For example, I'm the oldest of 4 kids, and I'm the only one of my siblings who've never been on a date. I just wouldn't know what to do in a relationship, and I don't want to sound bland or self-interested.

That's a very impressive streak. If you can help, that might be great. I don't really have someone in mind yet, I'm not very social lol
