i love the look of rough harsh strokes, but I'm afraid to use them in my own art, this is truly a thing of beauty.

It takes a while to get use to, especially, since it's so easy to undo brush strokes in digital media. You get comfortable with it after practice though.
The hard part's just conitneuing after first the unsuccessful attempts, once you do though it's really freeing especially for speed painting.

Really appreciate the reply :] Being only self taught and trying to figure everything out on my own is a rather task at time. What sort of brush settings would you use for this style of painting, if you mind me asking? thanks again.

I know how you feel, I've had to reverse engineer a lot of artist styles and different techniques to figure them out.
hmmm for brush settings it really depends on what kind of brushed you're using.
One setting to use for painting is having sensitive brush pressure
So you can shift from small>large brush size or low>high opacity all in one stroke.
If it's a pattern brush having the brush shape orientation randomized  can be helpful for a more natural look.
Textures are your friend when you're painting loose, the added detail from gives more for the eye to look at while saving time on the actual painting part, so building an arsenal of natural or rough looking brushes would be a good idea.
Keep using a variety and you'll start to see which brushes call out to you.
