Last edit I'm making to this, and I'm leaving this right at the top in bold letters. I don't have anything at all to do with designing, building, otherwise producing or rolling out Eclipse. If you have feedback to offer, features to request or bugs to report, please do that through the feedback forms provided for beta testers, or at least get in touch with staff members who are actively involved with building and releasing Eclipse (there are a couple of links in the journal below). Your explanations of all the things you think should be different about Eclipse, DA in general or the weather aren't going to go anywhere constructive or useful if you leave them in a comment here. There are channels provided specifically for that kind of feedback (OK, not the stuff about the weather) so please use them. Thanks!
Edit (again): Hi, I'm Tanya and I edit my journals twice in one day. Just a quick update to share this comment and this poll from danlev (sorry for tagging you again, Dan). Since I know a lot of people are interested in potential customisation for their profiles in Eclipse, this is an opportunity to share what you use custom boxes for and what kind of customisation options you'd like.Edit: So, a bunch of people have shared this and I just noticed it's showing up in the Popular 24 Hours section for journals. I guess this means a lot of people are finding it through channels other than it appearing in their message centres cause they already watch me. Welcome, new readers, commenters and friends! It's always extra lovely to meet people through random occurrences like this and I'm really happy to have you here. I know sometimes when people from different corners of DA arrive in one place unexpectedly, there can be a lot of replying to each other as well as to the journal itself, so I'd like to ask everyone to please be polite and respectful in your conversations. Thanks and much love!
I've been thinking about posting this for a few days but I wanted to do it politely and after a decent amount of consideration. I'm saying this as me-the-individual-person, not me-the-DA-volunteer. I don't speak for anyone other than myself. That said, here goes.
DeviantArt has been gradually rolling out the beta (quick reminder - a beta is a work in progress, an unfinished version in a state of continuous testing, improvement and refinement) of the site's new Eclipse redesign. This has been in the works for SO LONG, seriously, and so much research, planning and work went into it long before we (yep, CVs included) even saw the first hint of it. The people who are working on it do this kind of thing for a living. They have lots of experience doing the thing they do. They know what they're doing. And they know DA inside out.
I've mentioned before in a status post that involving site users at such an early stage of a redesign is pretty much unheard of and also kind of amazing. It takes guts to put something out there with a conscious request for feedback, especially knowing how tremendously abusive and flat-out awful people on DA can be. And that's what I want to talk about.
You could, and probably should, look at the ability to beta test Eclipse as an exciting opportunity. I mean, it is, right? You can help hunt for bugs, request features you'd love to use, and offer positive and negative feedback through forms provided by people who actively want
to know what you think so they can build a more awesome site for you to use. Heidi

. Those are both well worth a read.
But honestly, some of the responses I've seen around DA are absolutely heartbreaking. At the slightly less unkind end, there are explosive rants about features which have been openly identified as works in progress, feeding into rumours, speculation and conspiracy theories. There are assumptions that people who plan massive projects don't have as much knowledge as someone who has seen a tiny little segment of an absolutely huge picture. There are patronising, condescending well-actually
comments from people who I assume have the best of intentions but who vastly underestimate other people's skills, knowledge and professional experience.
At the darkest end of the scale, there are insults, threats, persistently abusive comments and campaigns of hate. This absolutely blows my mind. However much you might dislike an aspect of a website redesign, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for speaking to another human being that way. It's disgusting and deeply disappointing. Even more ridiculous is that a lot of this behaviour is coming from people who haven't even experienced Eclipse first-hand yet because it is in beta and being gradually rolled out to a global community of millions of users
I thought I'd seen DA's 'community' at its most cruel and vindictive at various points over the last 14 years, but some of the reactions to the Eclipse beta, to the actual human beings who are working so incredibly hard to create it
, leave me shaking my head and wondering if I even still want to be here. When I log in to DA, I steel myself against the barrage of negativity that I know is waiting. None of it has been directed at me personally, but oh my goodness it is still so rotten to have to encounter it! A website, a community, is not ruined by the way some graphics look. It is ruined by the way its members behave. It's ruined by people throwing tantrums and creating a hostile environment.
Likewise, a community is preserved, strengthened and advanced by the behaviour of its members. We - all of us, members, volunteers and staff - make DA what it is. When we support, encourage and strive to understand each other, we make something beautiful. When we hurl abuse, threats and vicious insults at each other, we make something so repulsive and unwelcoming that no-one in their right mind would want to go anywhere near it.
Take a breath. Fill in a feedback form, a feature request or a bug report. If you don't have access to Eclipse just yet, please endeavour not to form an opinion based on the angriest rants you've seen from other people (most of whom also don't have access to it yet). If you're so full of rage that you feel the need to post a vitriolic comment, journal or forum post insulting someone who has done literally nothing to you, please step away from the computer and come back when you can express yourself in a manner more befitting public communication. No-one's perfect and everyone gets pissed off sometimes. We all have a bit of a rant occasionally. But please try.
DA is better than this.We
are better than this.
Aren't we?Toxic commentary will not be tolerated here. Because this is my little corner of DA, I get to say that and I get to enforce it because I am so done with bearing witness to the pathetic level of mud-slinging that's been going on lately. Please be respectful and considerate...you know, like people are supposed to be when they talk to each other. Thanks!
