12 Days of Features 2018: Day 2

Sat Dec 15, 2018, 12:00 AM

12 Days of Features 2018: Day 1

Fri Dec 14, 2018, 12:00 AM

Whatever you celebrate at this time of year, you're invited to share the gift of appreciation and love with your fellow deviant artists by joining in the 12 Days of Features project.

Hosted by the Community Volunteers, 12 Days of Features is a merry way to discover amazing art.

Here's how it works...

Post 1 journal every day from 14th - 25th December.
The number of pieces of art featured in each journal should correspond to the day.

14th December - Day 1 - 1 piece of art
15th December - Day 2 - 2 pieces of art
16th December - Day 3 - 3 pieces of art
17th December - Day 4 - 4 pieces of art
18th December - Day 5 - 5 pieces of art
19th December - Day 6 - 6 pieces of art
20th December - Day 7 - 7 pieces of art
21st December - Day 8 - 8 pieces of art
22nd December - Day 9 - 9 pieces of art
23rd December - Day 10 - 10 pieces of art
24th December - Day 11 - 11 pieces of art
25th December - Day 12 - 12 pieces of art

Begin your journal with On the [number] day of features, DA gave to me... and then feature some art you love! You might want to choose a theme, medium, genre or category for your whole project or for each day. You might want to be a rebel and have no theme at all. It doesn't matter - it's all about sharing art, sharing joy and having fun.

Don't forget to tag your journals #12DaysOfFeatures

You can submit your feature journals to this 12 Days of Features - 2018 collection at communityrelations too if you like.

You're also welcome to comment here to let us know you're taking part and to share your journals as you post them, or all in one go when the 12 days are over.
If you want to do that, simply post one comment to announce your participation, then reply to that comment with your links (it makes it easier to keep track of whose journals are whose). If you're late to the party, don't worry. You can jump in any time.

So you don't get overwhelmed by creating and posting a journal every day, it's a great idea to draft all 12 journals in advance so they're ready to post each day, or schedule them ahead of time.

Get ready to spread some festive cheer!

Welcome!

In case you missed any of the beautiful Daily Deviations featured by Mrs-Durden and me in November, here they are!

Many thanks to everyone who suggested photos last month. Our guidelines for suggesting Daily Deviations are linked at the bottom of this article to help you with suggesting. We tend to get a lot more People & Portraits suggestions than anything else, so great pictures from other galleries are extra appreciated! Self-suggestions are always welcome too, if you have a piece of your own that you think we should see.

Last edit I'm making to this, and I'm leaving this right at the top in bold letters. I don't have anything at all to do with designing, building, otherwise producing or rolling out Eclipse. If you have feedback to offer, features to request or bugs to report, please do that through the feedback forms provided for beta testers, or at least get in touch with staff members who are actively involved with building and releasing Eclipse (there are a couple of links in the journal below). Your explanations of all the things you think should be different about Eclipse, DA in general or the weather aren't going to go anywhere constructive or useful if you leave them in a comment here. There are channels provided specifically for that kind of feedback (OK, not the stuff about the weather) so please use them. Thanks!

:boogie:

Edit (again): Hi, I'm Tanya and I edit my journals twice in one day. Just a quick update to share this comment and this poll from danlev (sorry for tagging you again, Dan). Since I know a lot of people are interested in potential customisation for their profiles in Eclipse, this is an opportunity to share what you use custom boxes for and what kind of customisation options you'd like.

Edit: So, a bunch of people have shared this and I just noticed it's showing up in the Popular 24 Hours section for journals. I guess this means a lot of people are finding it through channels other than it appearing in their message centres cause they already watch me. Welcome, new readers, commenters and friends! It's always extra lovely to meet people through random occurrences like this and I'm really happy to have you here. I know sometimes when people from different corners of DA arrive in one place unexpectedly, there can be a lot of replying to each other as well as to the journal itself, so I'd like to ask everyone to please be polite and respectful in your conversations. Thanks and much love! :aww:

I've been thinking about posting this for a few days but I wanted to do it politely and after a decent amount of consideration. I'm saying this as me-the-individual-person, not me-the-DA-volunteer. I don't speak for anyone other than myself. That said, here goes.

DeviantArt has been gradually rolling out the beta (quick reminder - a beta is a work in progress, an unfinished version in a state of continuous testing, improvement and refinement) of the site's new Eclipse redesign. This has been in the works for SO LONG, seriously, and so much research, planning and work went into it long before we (yep, CVs included) even saw the first hint of it. The people who are working on it do this kind of thing for a living. They have lots of experience doing the thing they do. They know what they're doing. And they know DA inside out.

I've mentioned before in a status post that involving site users at such an early stage of a redesign is pretty much unheard of and also kind of amazing. It takes guts to put something out there with a conscious request for feedback, especially knowing how tremendously abusive and flat-out awful people on DA can be. And that's what I want to talk about.

You could, and probably should, look at the ability to beta test Eclipse as an exciting opportunity. I mean, it is, right? You can help hunt for bugs, request features you'd love to use, and offer positive and negative feedback through forms provided by people who actively want to know what you think so they can build a more awesome site for you to use. Heidi posted a journal thanking you for your feedback and talking about changes still to come. danlev posted a change log. Those are both well worth a read.

But honestly, some of the responses I've seen around DA are absolutely heartbreaking. At the slightly less unkind end, there are explosive rants about features which have been openly identified as works in progress, feeding into rumours, speculation and conspiracy theories. There are assumptions that people who plan massive projects don't have as much knowledge as someone who has seen a tiny little segment of an absolutely huge picture. There are patronising, condescending well-actually comments from people who I assume have the best of intentions but who vastly underestimate other people's skills, knowledge and professional experience.

At the darkest end of the scale, there are insults, threats, persistently abusive comments and campaigns of hate. This absolutely blows my mind. However much you might dislike an aspect of a website redesign, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for speaking to another human being that way. It's disgusting and deeply disappointing. Even more ridiculous is that a lot of this behaviour is coming from people who haven't even experienced Eclipse first-hand yet because it is in beta and being gradually rolled out to a global community of millions of users.

I thought I'd seen DA's 'community' at its most cruel and vindictive at various points over the last 14 years, but some of the reactions to the Eclipse beta, to the actual human beings who are working so incredibly hard to create it, leave me shaking my head and wondering if I even still want to be here. When I log in to DA, I steel myself against the barrage of negativity that I know is waiting. None of it has been directed at me personally, but oh my goodness it is still so rotten to have to encounter it! A website, a community, is not ruined by the way some graphics look. It is ruined by the way its members behave. It's ruined by people throwing tantrums and creating a hostile environment.

Likewise, a community is preserved, strengthened and advanced by the behaviour of its members. We - all of us, members, volunteers and staff - make DA what it is. When we support, encourage and strive to understand each other, we make something beautiful. When we hurl abuse, threats and vicious insults at each other, we make something so repulsive and unwelcoming that no-one in their right mind would want to go anywhere near it.

Take a breath. Fill in a feedback form, a feature request or a bug report. If you don't have access to Eclipse just yet, please endeavour not to form an opinion based on the angriest rants you've seen from other people (most of whom also don't have access to it yet). If you're so full of rage that you feel the need to post a vitriolic comment, journal or forum post insulting someone who has done literally nothing to you, please step away from the computer and come back when you can express yourself in a manner more befitting public communication. No-one's perfect and everyone gets pissed off sometimes. We all have a bit of a rant occasionally. But please try.

DA is better than this.
We are better than this.
Aren't we?

Toxic commentary will not be tolerated here. Because this is my little corner of DA, I get to say that and I get to enforce it because I am so done with bearing witness to the pathetic level of mud-slinging that's been going on lately. Please be respectful and considerate...you know, like people are supposed to be when they talk to each other. Thanks!

The Last Photograph | a horror contest

Mon Oct 15, 2018, 12:00 AM

The ring by corsuse
Mrs-Durden and I would like to invite you to take part in a horror photography contest with a difference - the goal isn't to take the 'best' photo. The goal is to totally creep us out!

Instead of giving you a theme or a topic, we're giving you a story. The end of the story is the photo you take and submit to the contest.

We encourage you to dig around in the darkest depths of your imagination. If you're awesome at costume creating, monster making and effects make-up, that's great. If you're a super experienced horror photographer, that's great too. BUT...if you're none of those things, that's also great and you have just as much chance of winning!

Also, don't worry if you don't have a fancy camera, because shooting your contest entry on your phone will add to the authenticity of your photo and may work in your favour!

So, without further ado, here's how to take part.

[ the story ]

You're out for a walk on your own and you notice a mobile phone lying at the side of the path. The low battery light is flashing but it still has charge, so it must have been dropped recently. As you pick it up, the screen flickers to life and you see the last photo that was taken with it...the photo is your entry to the contest.

[ the rules ]

The contest begins at 00.01 PST on 15th October 2018 and ends at 23.59 PST on 10th November 2018.

Your entry MUST be created - that means shot, submitted to DA and entered into the contest - during that time.

Your entry should be submitted to the appropriate photography gallery on DeviantArt, whether that's Photography > Horror & Macabre or something else. Please bear in mind this is a photography contest, so any submissions that do not belong in the photography galleries will be disqualified.

Your entry should state in the description that it was created for The Last Photograph contest, with a link to this journal.

To enter the contest, simply leave a comment on this journal with a link or thumbnail for your entry (you can find out how to link to deviations here)

Only one entry per person, please!

[ the prizes ]

1st place

6 months Core membership or equivalent Points

2nd place

3 months Core membership or equivalent Points

3rd place

1 month Core membership or equivalent Points

Participation

YES! There is a prize for taking part in this contest! Providing ALL RULES ARE FOLLOWED, including creating an entry which clearly adheres to the contest's story, each participant will get 100 Points. There is a limit of one entry per person and anyone found to be cheating by using alt accounts will be disqualified, so please be honest.

Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges.

Lights Will Guide You Home by TanyaSimpson
I realised the other day that my 900,000th pageview will be happening soon, some time in the next week or so, barring any bizarre spikes or troughs.

If you happen to land on my page and see my pageview counter hit 900,000, take a screenshot, post it in a comment here on this journal and I'll send you however many Points are in my account at the time. It's currently only 291, so don't get too excited. But if you're collecting for something, that might be a nice little boost :aww:

If you win the Points but would rather donate them to someone else (maybe an admin for a group you're in is collecting for Super Group status, or someone you know is saving up for Core?), note me after you post your screengrab.

If more than one person catches 900k, I'll split the Points. I don't expect this but I think it's technically possible, if unlikely. Don't start digitally altering numbers on image files. That's a dick move and goats will pull your lungs out if you do it.

Fella is back in action!

Mon Oct 8, 2018, 6:10 AM

Fella is DA's mascot and has been the host of his own group for a long time. The group has been through a number of incarnations under the loving and watchful eye of various admins over the years, but had been on hiatus for quite a while. I'm excited to announce that fella is now back in action, reinvented, and ready to help new deviants find their creative community.

There are already lots of wonderful groups and projects on DA that facilitate sharing your art through their galleries and collections, provide educational and informative content, and host and promote community events. To avoid reinventing the wheel or overlapping with awesome things that already exist, fella's new incarnation is as a welcoming resource, aiming to direct new DA members to helpful and fun places and things around the site.

If you'd like to include fella in your welcome messages to new deviants, you can link to the journal below, or just to the group's front page.

Welcome!

In case you missed any of the beautiful Daily Deviations featured by Mrs-Durden and me in September, here they are!
