Another Planet's Sun - Preview by TankaaKumawani Another Planet's Sun - Preview by TankaaKumawani
2007 AP, aboard a StarTrade Group hab somewhere in the vicinity of Arth...

~Above these hills I'm reaching for the heights/and chasing all the lights that shine/but when they let you down/when first shift rolls around/it's another planet's sun~

Ori, son of Suhail and Renee, older brother of Claire, was once but an upper midworlder from the recently recontacted colony world Arth.  He threw aside his inheritance (and graduation present) for the chance to travel far beyond his homeworld.  By the time he had signed on with the Blood Rhinos and finished the first round of basic training, there was no turning back...

LHS3020b's work inspired me to try my own hand at drawing and writing science fiction vignettes.  Floppy Ears' backstory was long overdue for an explanation.  How did he end up as the lumbering thunder rhino we know him as today?  How did things go horribly wrong with the Lieutenant?  Why did Ori retire temporarily?  What recently drove him to rejoin the life of a soldier for hire?  Why draw this now?  What's with the abrupt but inevitable genre shift?  Where's your fanservice and squeakies?

This image will be scrapped when I color the full-page images.  Hopefully there will be a lot more in the future.

My apologies to Hurwitz, Paseck, and Paul for butchering that wonderful opening number

-----------

"Close your mouth before a fly goes in, Big Ears.  Oh right, you're a lizard.  Probably a light snack for you, huh?"
"I've been insulted by a robot!  This really is the future..."
"Hmph, groundhogs."

See, this kind of imagination and affinity for space/sci-fi is the reason why I followed you. With all the details in the centripetal station you've truly outdone yourself. It has a "seeing the Citadel for the first time in Mass Effect 1" feeling. Every square inch you see in this POV seems to have a tangible infrastructural/community function.
-So is "Feel so Space" a reference to "Feel so Moon", from Space Brothers?
-The Evangelion "fanservice to the end" references keep on coming, don't they?

Thanks!  It looks like I might be busy again soon, so I'm not going to have as much time to fuss with getting this stuff colored.

Someone who isn't my sister got the reference to the seinen show I can't seem to get other people to watch in spite of the accessible story, appealing subject matter, and lack of moe!

I'm horrible about that, aren't I?  This wasn't really an Evangelion gag, I was poking fun at the new crop of watchers that turned up when I trotted out the adoptable.

I'm glad that things have proven inspirational. I had never been sure in the past whether it was worth writing anything, really.

Now the challenge is scraping up the desire to clean it up, color it, and get the vignettes written.  (Being fired up really makes me want to get back to work on Zinogre...)

A maglev track in a partially-evacuated tube.  It turns what would be a somewhat marginal SSTO into a much better one, since it doesn't have to fight through that first mile or two of atmosphere in the process of going from zero to high subsonic velocities.

What's a SSTO?

Single Stage To Orbit.  In short, a spacecraft that isn't a "disintegrating totem pole" rocket with multiple stages.  Due to the limitations of engine design (what's good at low altitudes is not good in space) and materials (you don't want the spacecraft to buckle or fall apart during the peak aerodynamic stress period), it's easier to build a good TSTO (Two Stage to Orbit) rocket.

This looks awesome. I love the station design you did. Realistic concepts like these gives me joy.

And the include of my race fits very well inn! I can't wait for the colored versions.

Thanks, Zefnoly.  It's nice to be able to achieve some fraction of that Don Davis/Rick Gudice feel in my art.  If only I was better at crowd scenes, we would have had a baggage claim...

I hear your struggle. There is always some advancements you need to take for certain types of artworks.
