What is the Tango Desktop Project?

The Tango Desktop Project exists to help create a consistent graphical user interface experience for free and Open Source software.

While the look and feel of an application is determined by many individual components, some organization is necessary in order to unify the appearance and structure of individual icon sets used within those components.

The Tango Desktop Project defines an icon style guideline to which artists and designers can adhere. A sample implementation of the style is available as an icon theme based upon a standardized icon naming specification. In addition, the project provides transitional utilities to assist in creating icon themes for existing desktop environments, such as GNOME and KDE.

Eventually, the Tango Desktop Project will provide the following initiatives:
A suggested default native look.
A subsystem to help standardize toolkits on a common icon naming structure.
A complete set of application, mimetype, and stock icons designed using a defined style guide.
A general, cross-desktop human interface guideline.

What is the Tango Desktop Project?
Our front page states, "The Tango Desktop Project exists to create a consistent user experience for Open Source software." That's a pretty good explanation. Between the front page and this FAQ, you should hopefully get a pretty good idea what we're set out to accomplish.

Why make a whole new set of icons?
Icons are important; they add meaning and convey a sense of style.
We felt that there needed to be a nice vector-based icon set that could create a consistent user interface for the Linux desktop. The Tango icons are building upon many of the current icon concepts used by KDE, GNOME, and Firefox.
Please note that older iconsets can be used with our new framework -- and, once ported, will work across the desktops in a consistent manner.

Terms of Use?
The color palette is public domain. The icon theme is also available as public domain since the 0.8.90 release. While you are not obligated to, we would appreciate if you credit the project if you chose to use the icon theme or derivative artwork in your project by linking to our website. This will help to strengthen the awareness of the style guidelines. Thank you.
Older releases were available under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license but this created an unecessary barrier for adoption at certain cases.

…But I like my current theme, my current icons, etc… can I still use them with Tango? How?
Yes! The icon themes just need to be ported. Right now, that means:
‪1.‬ Naming the icons the proper names as defined by our Standard Icon Naming Specification.
‪2.‬ Running our little conversion utility.
‪3.‬ Repackaging and / or installing the theme.

We will have some nice detailed instructions forthcoming.

On Ubuntu, the configure script fails to find imagemagick, although I have it installed
You need to have libmagick9-dev installed in adition to imagemagick for the configure script to find it.

Who is involved?
We are engineers, artists, user interface designers, and volunteers. We'd like you to be involved.

Join us in our effort to produce a native, open look and structure by contributing to the guidelines, improving applications (by encouraging them follow the proposed specifications), contributing artwork, and by spreading the ideas expressed here.

Interested contributors from Gnome, KDE, and other free and open source projects are welcome. We invite anyone to follow the specifications defined here, as well as those defined on freedesktop.org.

You can file bugs against the Tango icon library, icon style guideline, and the Icon Naming Specification in freedesktop.org's bugzilla.

The Tango icon library, icon style guideline matters, and artistic workflows can be discussed on the tango-artists mailing list. The Icon Naming Specification can be discussed on the XDG mailing list.

Terms Of Use

The Tango base icon theme is released to the Public Domain. The palette is in public domain. Developers, feel free to ship it along with your application. The icon naming utilities are licensed under the GPL.

:bulletblack:Что такое Tango Desktop Project?
