I decided to make a little series out of painting my snakes! This is Kovu... yup, my boyfriend named him after the lion from The Lion King 2 :"D of course, if you know me you know I won't complain about a Lion King reference! Painting these guys is great practice for dragons and reptiles in the future, and also some much needed hand practice! This little dude stole my heart, as soon as I saw him I knew I had to have him. He has such a dorky face. I got him on Valentines day this month!

He's a Liasis fuscus or an Australian water python. It's unlikely I'll ever be able to find a female for him, they're very hard to come by as a species. I was surprised when I saw him for sale! If I ever manage to find a female I will certainly buy it. I adore their deep brown colors, and they radiate rainbows in the sunlight! Can you tell I have a thing for iridescence?
He's a fantastic eater and once he's full grown he'll be situated in a semi-aquatic bio-active exo-terra! Coming up next is probably a hognose or one of my ball pythons!

PS- the full process video of this painting was recorded and will be part of my Patreon video tutorial on shiny animal textures this month! It will go up on Gumroad as well at some point.

I adore how soft and gentle it all seems. Snakes are beautiful creatures and in this instead of their reputation for death, we see their grace.
Wonderful job.

I want a water python so bad. Fortunately for me, being in Australia makes them a little easier to come by I'd imagine, though they're not hugely common here either. They're such beautiful snakes. Any yay for bioactive vivariums!

I absolutely ADORE water pythons! Since I'm Australian I'll be able to get once rather easily, though you don't find them for sale here as often as some of our other pythons.
I had the chance to handle an adult water python last month when visiting someone I was getting a hatchling carpet python from :) it's gorgeous how their scales shine in the light.

You're probably having trouble finding another one since its illegal in Australia to export our reptiles in order to sell them.

They actually have many of our pythons from many years ago before it was illegal to import them from here (though I don't doubt some get there illegally, as I hear news of people illegally owning snakes from America here). Woma pythons and some other carpet pythons from here I believe are somewhat common to find over there.

Yes, and there are very few captive breedings happening in the US these days. He's captive bred though so they do occur from time to time

Since it's Monday, I started a my last chapter of Biology; finally getting to the interesting stuff like the reptiles, birds and mammals. They're going through the reptiles first and in the classifications list I found out snakes are deaf. I had no idea, I thought they had ears that were really just covered up like birds were.

Small stuff like that that just makes you think "Huh, wow."

your snakes are so cute. How old is this guy? After seeing your snakes, maybe I'll get some one day. :)

As far as I know they're still able to use an inner-ear-like structure to be aware of noise/vibrations! such unique creatures
He's over 2 years old and around 4.5 feet now. He will max out at around 7' within the next couple years :)

Hmm, yes they can probably feel vibrations through their locomotion belly scales as well as heat vision. :)

When will he reach full maturity?

He should be ready to breed by age 2.5-3 but like most pythons will continue to grow slowly for the next 5-10 years
