1. A Kind Boy Called Puffin: Calm Sea

🐧 There was a world, almost like ours, but not quite, where a banished prince was enslaved by monsters, but he fought back, and made them his friends. This is his story. New Birmingham City, State of New Birmingham “Come for the beaches, stay for our AI future” Martin was paddling on his surfski, away from the world. His craft; he'd have told you all about it; was a very specific kind of kayak, made to ride the swell, as fast as dreams go. That day the wind was gone, the sea calm. That was perfect on its own way, so the boy could focus on perfection, a tranquil struggle to make the most of each paddle stroke, to make music on the air, to reach the sublime from simple forms. Rrrrrr–shhh, Anne, his coach, was approaching to his right, the outboard engine purring. ‘Left arm, must keep you high.’, the boy thought. Martin was expecting Anne to find some flaw in his paddling, in truth there's always some flaw. But, sometimes, it's better to leave a young rider, a

Wind in the Willows the Mali Chronicles Sneak Peek

The spring sun glinted off the polished chrome of the canary-yellow roadster parked in the driveway of Jungle Manor. It was a machine built for speed, noise, and chaos—exactly the kind of vehicle that made the local constabulary wake up in a cold sweat.. Standing next to it, admiring her reflection in the side mirror, was Mali. The eighteen-year-old jungle princess had traded her loincloth for a scandalous, form-fitting leather racer suit that left absolutely nothing to the imagination. The material was snug against her skin, hugging her wide hips and accentuating her bubbly breasts, while the zipper was pulled down just enough to show off an eye-catching display of ample cleavage. She posed, popping a hip, looking every bit the "Queen of the Road." Mr. Krabs, the red crab salesman, rubbed his claws together greedily, his eyes practically turning into dollar signs. "A fine vessel for a fine lady! Agagagag! She purrs like a sea kitten, she does!" Just then, the front doors of the

He Who Broke the Rat's Heart

Do you know what the deadliest creature on the peninsula is? Lions, bears, sharks, and humans. I’ve heard all these answers before and none of them are correct. The greatest killer is a beast that most people overlook because of its size, and there isn’t a person alive that hasn’t been bit by one. The mosquito waits in the dark, attracted by your breath and thirsty for a drop of blood. Yet, it isn’t their thirst that should scare you, but the diseases they carry. Remember, the true god of war wasn’t killed by steel, fire, or brimstone, but a cough. Chapter 20    He Who Broke the Rat's Heart Icarus’s hand wouldn’t stop shaking. He held his palm up to his nose, trying to steady the rhythm. His sister’s death upset him, but this was different. The rush of adrenaline during the battle had masked his fever, but now, after having won, his hearts still beat like a drum. “What’s going on?” he asked, a sharp pain stabbing his chest. Icarus dropped to his knees, doubling over as blood

[CV] Beowulf - Gust of Luck

The heavy winds blasted Beowulf’s herd with little mercy. It would dip in severity for a while, giving them a break, only to pick up again. The dry air twisted and tangled their manes and tails and irritated their eyes. Some of them attempted to hide under the shelter the pen provided, only to find that it didn’t do much. Others decided to bear it outside, figuring it didn’t matter where they stood. Foals stood in the shadows of the adults whose larger bodies protected them from the brunt of it. The humans were notably absent today. They came in for the morning and evening feedings, and put fly masks on the tame horses in the other pasture. A few of them came by the pen and peered at the mustangs, debating something the mustangs couldn’t understand, before returning to the safety of their home. Other than the wind, it was a rather uneventful day. The minutes seemed to drag on, with the mustangs not being able to do much but putter around and wait for something to happen. When night

[CV] Beowulf - Too Much Fun

After the fire, the herd traveled to the lake to seek the comfort of water. The forest fire did not follow them and died out as the dawn approached. Dahlia coughed and complained that her lungs hurt and Nahuatl limped from her burns but otherwise the herd was unharmed. The lake bustled with activity. Herds splashed in the water or grazed on the surrounding plains. Beowulf’s herd found a spot of their own on the southern end of the lake. The sun was high and hot, dazzling Beowulf with its reflection off the water’s surface. He didn’t mind if his herd mingled with the others, as long as no one wandered off alone and remained within reasonable distance, but Barcelona came up to him with worries of Kunai’s whereabouts. He had gone to play with Takeshi, Balerion, and some colts from a neighboring herd. Takeshi and Balerion returned an hour later, without Kunai in tow and claiming to not know where he went. Barcelona seemed to lose track of her foals one way or another, a thought Beowulf

[CV] Fierce Battle

The day was cold and bright. The light layer of snow on the rolling hills of the valley shimmered under the sunlight and hurt the eyes if one looked at it for too long. The sky above was clear and blue, with not a single cloud to be seen. Beowulf’s herd stood loosely scattered amongst the snow. Mares chatted peacefully with each other or dug for grass. Laughter and shouts from playing foals drifted into the air. A band of young bachelors grazed some distance away, but paid little attention to Beowulf’s herd. All was good. Beowulf stood beside Silvana, grooming her shoulder as she did likewise to him. Their eldest daughter, Helena, grazed nearby. Beowulf could still hardly believe that she was grown now, and he knew that her time with the herd would likely not be long now, a weight that settled heavy on his heart. All young horses left their birth herds at some point but the knowledge didn’t make it any easier to let go. A breeze stirred his mane. He was not a fan of the winter

“Pick up the pace little man,” Ardere called over his shoulder to his young cousin, Rodrick. A muffled grunt and the sound of hooves beating rapidly against sage and stone was young Rodrick’s only reply. It wasn’t often that Ardere allowed the younger colt to tag along on his adventures, but today the bay dun Appaloosa yearling had felt unusually generous. But only on the condition that Rodrick keep up, and not slow him down. “What’s the big hurry anyways, cousin,” Rodrick grumbled, finally catching up to the much larger Ardere. “This,” Ardere pointed with his velvety nose towards a spot beyond the hazy green sage brush, “Is what the big hurry is, Rodrick.” Rodrick’s eyes went wide with utter amazement at the scene laid out before them. Far out on the prairie two battle scarred stallions sparred, dancing to and fro whilst landing hit after hit. The colts were mesmerized by this deadly dance.  “What are they fighting over,” Rodrick whispered as Ardere shushed him and pushed him

CV | Bramble #137 | Coyote Canyon

The herd wove through the dusty canyon single file so as not to fall off the edge of the narrow trail. It was quite a windy day and more than once a gust of wind had threatened to send one of the younger foals off the ridge and into the belly of the canyon below. Bramble normally wouldn’t have led the herd through such a treacherous area but a recent drought had forced his hoof. Now the only thing that stood between the herd and dehydration was this narrow canyon trail. For just a ways ahead the trail broadened, leading to a pool of rainwater the horses could quench their thirst in. Rigel and Boulder had chosen to stay at the back of the line to ensure there would be no stragglers. However, as the sun beat down upon the yearling colts’ backs and their mouths became dry like cotton, they began to regret their noble decision. Especially as they were stuck behind the very pregnant and very slow Anita. She waddled, her large belly swaying from side to side, and as she went her belly

CV | Bramble #137 | The Release

The holding pens were absolute chaos. A trio of wide eyed bachelors charged rampantly through the chutes connecting the makeshift pens, shying away from Bramble’s pinned ears as they ran past his pen. The wild bay bachelor balked, sending his two leopard friends skidding through the dusty footing and causing their brightly colored sabino friend to stumble. Alecto barked out an order at them to keep moving.  Alecto and Bramble had been fortunate enough to warrant a private pen, allowing Bramble to heal without too much interference. Most of the wild eyed mustangs roaming through the larger, and more crowded, holding pens had no such luck. Every so often the humans culled some of them and allowed them to go free. Just yesterday a respectable band stallion, Medieval, and his herd had been allowed to go. Alecto hoped he and Bramble would be next. From their vantage point in the small pen they could see that the wildfires were slowly starting to die out, the valley coated in cool white

CV - Topsy Turvey

Already, the sun stood high in the sky, as Nyroc, Flinn and Leota traversed the open grassland. Wishing there was some way to keep cool, the cream-colored Bachelor leader panted. Summer wouldn't be far off, and he worried about both himself and the two other light-colored studs who made up his current band. It wasn't as though they wouldn't survive, but sunburns were enough of a hassle for himself; trying to imagine keeping three tawny horses from overheating, burning, and otherwise being incredibly unhappy throughout the whole summer was a thought he would rather not entertain. Not to mention, spring and summer were the most plentiful seasons, so why should he want to be overly-worried during the best parts of the year? It wasn't fair, by any stretch of the imagination. Snorting, Nyroc realized that Flynn and Leota had stopped, suddenly. Whipping his head about, the silver amber champagne stallion searched for the reason that his band stopped so abruptly. His question was quickly

NordoWriMo - CYO - Search and Rescue

Cinnabar galloped towards home, his ears flat to his skull, and his war-cut mane and tail flapping in the breeze he created. His heart pounded, as he slid to a halt in the courtyard of Silver Wolf Stables, across the bridge and into the actual grounds of the farm again. His blue eyes rolled with fear as he clattered to a halt. He whinnied a piercing cry, trying to alert someone...anyone...that he needed help. A moment later, Magnus came out of the barn, his brows furrowed as he hurried towards the gelding. Magnus grabbed the horse’s reins, trying to calm him down. But Cinnabar could not be eased, as he trotted in place, whinnying and snorting. “Hey...buddy...where’s Vi?” Asked Magnus, as though the horse could answer him. Worry crossed his brow, as he took in details about the horse. He noticed that the horse was all tacked up still, but that the camera and human were both missing. As the words left his lips, he watched the horse rear up and whinny, shaking his head.

Long Time, No See

The last of the desperate scramble were starting to settle down now, Fish could tell. His sides heaved in and out, struggling for breath, but somehow he managed to keep on going until he escaped the reach of the researchers trying desperately to split the stampede and round up the stragglers. He was tired, but not stupid. He wouldn't go. He did, however, have to quit eventually, and when he did, he finally looked around without the red haze of panic coating every action, each thought reduced to animal panic as he fought even just to keep his footing without tripping to a worse fate than this. What he realized was quick, and unfortunate, coming in three parts: one, he had no idea where he was. Two, he had no idea how to get back. And three, worst of all... he couldn't see a single member of his herd. Figures. Oryx was watching the horizon. Dust clouds. Wondering what it could be, the buckskin horse turned his attention to his herdmates, seeing that they were busy grooming, napping, or
