Rohan paced the fenceline, hooves wearing a path in the trodden earth. Long green grass damp with morning dew wet his legs as he brushed past. The morning was dreary with no sign of sunlight through the thick onset of fog. It made it difficult for Rohan to see the nearby treeline where he’d desperately watched for any signs of life. He’d been separated from his sister and traveling companion, Holly and her young colt Sandstone, whilst in search of their cousin’s herd. They’d planned to join Bramble for the spring to give Sandstone some stability and sense of familiar bonds. But instead their plans had been interrupted by some rather pesky two leggeds and their insipid ropes. At the time of Rohan’s capture Holly and Sandstone had opted to stay back in the meadow to graze whilst Rohan scouted the area surrounding them. The holding pens were absolute chaos. A trio of wide eyed bachelors charged rampantly through the chutes connecting the makeshift pens, shying away from Bramble’s pinned ears as they ran past his pen. The wild bay bachelor balked, sending his two leopard friends skidding through the dusty footing and causing their brightly colored sabino friend to stumble. Alecto barked out an order at them to keep moving. Alecto and Bramble had been fortunate enough to warrant a private pen, allowing Bramble to heal without too much interference. Most of the wild eyed mustangs roaming through the larger, and more crowded, holding pens had no such luck. Every so often the humans culled some of them and allowed them to go free. Just yesterday a respectable band stallion, Medieval, and his herd had been allowed to go. Alecto hoped he and Bramble would be next. From their vantage point in the small pen they could see that the wildfires were slowly starting to die out, the valley coated in cool white

The weather in Cottonwood Valley had been strange as of late. One moment it would be sunshine and rainbows only for the next to be torrential downpours. The influx of strange weather had brought on a series of floods, causing the once grassy meadows to become a swampy mess. Many of the herds within the valley chose to travel to higher elevations up the mountains in search of drier ground. But not Sreten’s herd, no Sreten’s herd was remarkably undeterred by the soggy grazing grounds. Shelly reasoned that wet grass was just as good for you as dry grass and, well, nobody ever really argued with Shelly. Thus the herd stuck around, mowing down the damp turf around them. The greenery made for a stunning scene as Thistle and Pepper’s brilliant chestnut coats made a stark contrast with the emerald fields. START | NEXT "H-Hello?" A voice cracked behind her. Sandburr looked up from her hooves, flicking an ear and turning her head in a jarring and jagged motion that gives away her jumpiness. It's probably obvious to any horse that she's freshly departed from her herd with how her alertness bordered on fear. Damphides they called horses like her, likening them to foals freshly born and still slick with the fluids of life. But thankfully, it seems the first horse she ran into has an even wetter hide than her own. His eyes were still large and wide-eyed to the world and his features haven't sharpened into the striking profile of a stallion yet. She could see the beginnings of the distinctly grey patches of roaning speckled across his back, too many to be a foal but too little to indicate full maturity. The parts of his body not touched by pale gray was instead a deep, rich red, akin to dried out clay sitting on the banks of a riverbed. While Sandburr departed her own herd by her own

"You're that horse that sells that snake oil, right?" Sandburr's ears perked up. Her palomino head turned to face a horse with markings almost as bizarre as her own almost entirely white body. Brown ripples ran down his withers and his eyes were wrapped in an intricate tapestry of lines as small and as delicate as a spider's legs. His hide is a warm brown, not dark enough to be earthy but not light enough to be mistaken for the golden rays of a midafternoon sun. The stallion carries himself with an energy foreign to most in the Tameless Isle, excitable and antsy. Honestly, Sandburr wasn't planning on advertising her wares at the Migrations of Colors. PREVIOUS | NEXT "It really is you!" The now mostly pale red stallion bounded up to Sandburr with a familiarity that should only be reserved for family members and herd mates. Other than a strikingly long, red mane and the usual course that maturity takes upon a stallion's body, nothing much has changed since the last time they've met one another. Still chirpy, still overwhelming, still the same colt she's met all those years ago but now with that energy crammed into a body unfitting for it. But, familiarity doesn't equal softening.
