Well, took a bit longer than I thought, and a bit shorter for this part, but I wanted to give some time to breathe for the next. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Part 5: Paws, Roos and Jaws too Present Day, Diprotodon Paddock Cicada calls echo throughout the outskirts of the Ivan E. Howl snorted loudly, pushing the soot under his muzzle up in a gust of cloying black. He pulled his head up quickly, nose wrinkled in disgust. Tail twitching, he continued cautiously through the ruined forest. The trees were black and burnt, their bark cracked and slowly oozing out sap. Puffs of ash danced up under each of Howl’s hoof falls, settling back down once he was gone. The herd had seen the blaze from far off the night before. Orange and red flames licking up at the starry sky, the somber roar reaching their ears and keeping the foals awake. The older fillies, Ata, Andromeda, Thalia, and Ahoy had tried to put on brave faces for the younger foals. Ata had tried to tell them that she’d fight the fire herself if it tried to catch them. “You call this a storm?” shouted Santiana, a wild light in her eyes matching the flashes of lightning. “Yes, I do!” Howl roared back, struggling to make himself heard over the monsoon. The Lead Stallion’s ears were pinned against his head, his blue eyes narrowed to tiny slits, as he unsteadily put one hoof in front of the other, being as careful as he could, leading the herd down the rocky slope. A nasty squall had taken them entirely be surprise, far away from any real shelter. Ordinarily, Howl would have the herd hunker down and wait out the worst of the rain and wind, but Shiver was heavily pregnant and had begun shakingly violently from the lashing wet and cold. Unwillingly to separate the herd in such dangerous weather meant he was taking them all to a dank overhang of rock in the shadow of the mountains. The first snowfall of the season brought a mixture of emotions to Sreten’s herd. Some were grateful for the shelter and food provided by the two-leggeds during this time. The weather in Cottonwood Valley had been strange as of late. One moment it would be sunshine and rainbows only for the next to be torrential downpours. The influx of strange weather had brought on a series of floods, causing the once grassy meadows to become a swampy mess. Many of the herds within the valley chose to travel to higher elevations up the mountains in search of drier ground. But not Sreten’s herd, no Sreten’s herd was remarkably undeterred by the soggy grazing grounds. Shelly reasoned that wet grass was just as good for you as dry grass and, well, nobody ever really argued with Shelly. Thus the herd stuck around, mowing down the damp turf around them. The holding pens were absolute chaos. A trio of wide eyed bachelors charged rampantly through the chutes connecting the makeshift pens, shying away from Bramble’s pinned ears as they ran past his pen. The wild bay bachelor balked, sending his two leopard friends skidding through the dusty footing and causing their brightly colored sabino friend to stumble. Alecto barked out an order at them to keep moving. Alecto and Bramble had been fortunate enough to warrant a private pen, allowing Bramble to heal without too much interference. Most of the wild eyed mustangs roaming through the larger, and more crowded, holding pens had no such luck. Every so often the humans culled some of them and allowed them to go free.
