The herd wove through the dusty canyon single file so as not to fall off the edge of the narrow trail. It was quite a windy day and more than once a gust of wind had threatened to send one of the younger foals off the ridge and into the belly of the canyon below. Now the only thing that stood between the herd and dehydration was this narrow canyon trail. The Lead Stallion’s ears were pinned against his head, his blue eyes narrowed to tiny slits, as he unsteadily put one hoof in front of the other, being as careful as he could, leading the herd down the rocky slope. A nasty squall had taken them entirely be surprise, far away from any real shelter. Ordinarily, Howl would have the herd hunker down and wait out the worst of the rain and wind, but Shiver was heavily pregnant and had begun shakingly violently from the lashing wet and cold.
