New Year's Day--
everything is in blossom!
I feel about average.

-Kobayashi Issa

With graduation so soon I feel as though it could count as a "New Year"....

:)

Ah, Issa, you're my poetic hero- the Pablo Neruda of feudal Japan!

that haiku doesn't work at all.

Hmmm.... now, I can see two reasons why you might think it doesn't work. I'll try to clear things up for you! :)

Possible Reason #1: Context
No doubt graduation is a celebratory affair full of pomp and crazy seniors being stupid and getting drunk but I am no different from the norm. I feel this poem effectively conveys the idea of a moment in time- like the New Year or graduation- and the individual seeing the change or celebration but not feeling any different. I know these things are happening- the world is waking up around me- but I still feel about average!

Possible Reason #2: Poetic Structure
The haiku doesn't have the 575 syllabic structure because it was written in Japanese first..... guh. I, not being able to decipher a SINGLE Japanese word or letter (:(), found that the translation was a better idea. :D Dude.

Hope that clears it up a little? I don't want you to think I'm a crazy...... :)

Haha it was the structure that I was caught up on, but now that you told me that of course that makes sense. And don't worry, I know you're a crazy. But we all are, so it's ok. ;)
