I have lived here for 10 years and never seen a butterfly in my yard till today :) So I just had to share. Several DAs have found this butterfly to be an Old World Swallowtail

I guess these butterflies do sit still for photos. I have one just like this in my gallery except the tree is different. but yours is more detailed than mine.

I haven't seen any butterflies this year. I don't really know why.

I love Tiger Swallowtails! I bead weave in my (ha!) spare time and am planning on using a lower wing as a pattern for earrings. I once did a Monarch wing that turned out well.

Random thought: Do you know what tree/plant this is feeding from?
Tailgun2009's avatar
No I really don't know the name of the plant :( Thanks for the fave on it! :)

I was really amazed to findout! It is a Tiger Swallowtail. I just really was lucky to catch it on one of my backyard bushes.

Yes, very lucky  I've never been able to get shots of them in my garden. They're too quick for me. But the zoo has a really fantastic butterfly exhibit and I've enjoyed observing and photographing them there :eager: You know, most butterflies only live a week or less. Amazing!
