12. Your Tokota must learn to cope with the loss of something close to them; be it a prized possession or a friend/loved one.
Handler, 500 word story, companion, Coastal Tyonek

Time continued on- Kanel had been with Archer for over a year now, and he had seen many tokotas come, and stay within his house on the edge of Coastal Tyonek. One of which was his daughter, Echo. His 'romance' with her mother had been brief, but that was how things worked with Archer- he already had his hands full with many tokotas, and his focus shifted as other, younger tokotas called for his attention. He hadn't minded- it gave him time to help raise Echo and grow. He watched and taught and coddled, and soon Echo had grown up into a fine young tokota, earning her handpaints from Archer.  Naturally, her curly fur, like his, had drew his attention, as well as many of the male tokotas. He was worried for her, knowing that Archer would be introducing her to male tokotas soon, expecting her to bear pups, and knew that it would be likely that the pups would be sent to other homes. They had very little room on the homestead, and the barn had been filled to the point of putting two tokotas who got along well in the same stall. He wanted what was best for them, and sometimes that meant sending pups on their way to another good home. As much as Kanel understood, he hated for her to know the pain of 'losing' a litter, despite them going to good homes.
Soon, she was expecting, and Kanel did what he could for her, making an effort to make himself available if she needed him, but kept his distance, knowing that she would be protective of her pups when the time came. The puppies were all healthy, but Kanel soon noticed Archer showing new people around the barn, particularly to look at Echo's pups. He knew what would happen next, and sure enough, one day came and went to find the pups gone. Kanel comforted her as best he could, giving her small comfort that Archer wouldn't send them to bad homes. A few months went by before she was expecting again, and Kanel could tell that she was worried about what would happen to this litter. They spent a lot of time together, talking, and Kanel told her about what had happened with his previous litters, and how she was the only pup that Archer had kept.
Again, Echo had her litter of pups, but this time Archer seemed interested in one of them, though Kanel could tell he was worried about space in the barn. While the pup, Rascal, was small now, he would grow quickly, and Archer was worried about space. Knowing how important it was that he was able to help care for Echo as she was growing up, Kanel knew what he had to do. Echo, Kanel, and Rascal were all outside, enjoying one of the last few warm days of the season, enjoying the afternoon in the browning grass. Kanel walked up to Archer, resting his head on his shoulder, before pulling away gently after he felt his handler's hands on his neck. He looked towards the barn, then towards Echo and Rascal, and Archer blinked a few times before nodding; he understood. Kanel turned, walking away, before glancing over his shoulder one last time at the happy family, and the home where he had spent his life in Coastal Tyonek.
