Archer shifted in the saddle, breath clouding in the air as he turned, looking around for his friend. They had come together for the halloween events put on by the tokota association, and after an evening of watching and participating in the costume contest, Archer and Kelly had planned on going to check out the haunted toko ride-a five mile trek through various obstacles. He had been somewhat concerned after hearing a few distant shouts and screams, coupled with a few tokota howls and yips, though thankfully Phantom seemed relatively unimpressed with the going ons around him. One of Archer’s newest tokotas, Phantom was settling in nicely and seemed to be a very quiet, calm tokota, though he was prone to sneaking up to others and bumping them with a paw or his nose and enticing them into a game of tag. Thankfully, he had been on his best behaviour for the event, and no incidents had occurred. Right now he was standing relatively relaxed, ears loose and swiveling as other pairs of tokotas and riders walked past, talking on their way back home. Phantom twisted his head, glancing behind him, and Archer followed his gaze to see Kelly riding up on Alejandro, holding a small bag of sweets for Archer and some treats for Phantom that he had asked her to purchase for the two of them.
“How much was it?” He asked, accepting the bag from Kelly and reaching into his pocket to pull out his wallet, leafing through it and pulling out a few bills to pay her back with. Phantom swung his head around, sniffing at the small white bag before opening his jaws as if to snatch it, though Archer reached down with a hand and pushed his muzzle away-the treats would be for later, though he couldn’t resist pulling one of the tokota cookies and tossing it to Phantom, who caught it in his mouth and chewed on it.
“So what do you think about this?” Archer asked, gesturing towards the haunted tokota ride banner fluttering in the evening breeze. Black lettering was painted on yellow-orange paper, dripping down and giving the impression that the lettering was of a viscous liquid. Overall, it looked a bit tacky, but from the sounds of shouts, screams, and startled yips ahead, it was doing a good job of scaring the participants. Archer felt a vague sense of apprehension-he normally didn’t like to participate in scary things, or even watch scary movies, but he didn’t exactly want to admit that to Kelly, and he was relatively confident in Phantom’s steadfast temperament.

Kelly smiled at Archer and Phantom before shaking her head at the sight of Archer’s wallet. “Consider it a gift… For being a good kitty.” Kelly said in an ironic tone before smiling at the grey feline. Alejandro let out a small yawn before smiling at Phantom who seemed like he was chilling out as well. Maybe these two were to become friends, or at least the greying merle male hoped so. Alejandro wasn’t really known for his friendly temper but he saw something in Phantom, something that made him believe they would become friends without even trying. The brunette turned her head to glare at a passing pair, it was obvious they were scared and it really intrigued Kelly to see what could have possibly caused them such terror. As soon as Archer spoke again, Kelly hastily turned her head back to the feline and his Tokota before replying. “I think it is going to be a piece of cake.” Kelly said in a plain tone before petting Alejandro’s head. Alex yipped happily before turning his head to the right and stretching his tongue in an attempt to lick Kelly’s hand, even though Kelly managed to pull her hand before he managed to lick it. A small giggle escaped the brunette’s mouth when a falcon flew past her but what really made her smile was that the peregrine falcon actually just circled around her before landing on Kelly’s shoulder. The brunette muttered some words in what appeared to be latin before a piece of paper appeared around the falcon’s right leg. “Go tell your master that next time he wants to give me a message, he can just give me a call.” Kelly said in a sarcastic tone before the falcon nodded and took off while Kelly opened the mini scroll and started reading it. The brunette sighed in annoyance before tossing the paper into the air and setting in on fire so by the time it hit the ground, all that was left was ashes.”I believe it is time to go, isn’t it Archer?” Kelly asked in a plain tone before gently nudging Alejandro, who thankfully started walking without much complaining, besides a low growl. Alejandro’s ears perked up and he lifted up his muzzle before continuously sniffing the rather humid air, mimicking Kelly. The agitated male carefully scanned the area, making sure everything was okay. He had to shake off that feeling, because that was all it was, a feeling. Kelly lowered her head and whispered something in his fluffy ear, calming Alejandro down before returning her gaze to the feline and his tokota.

Archer nodded and put the white bag into his saddlebags, securing them tightly so that Phantom wouldn’t be able to open them.
“Thanks Kelly, I owe you lunch sometime.” He said with a smile. After Kelly’s interaction with the bird, Archer nodded in response to her words. “Let’s head out then.” He said, nudging Phantom’s sides and sending him at a walk underneath the fluttering banner. Phantom eyed it warily, but thankfully continued underneath without incident. Archer looked around, and noted that they seemed to be walking through a small forest of sorts, with halloween decorations strewn in the trees. Spiderwebs were strung between the branches, with the occasional motion activated large spider wiggling it’s legs and hissing as Archer, Kelly, Phantom, and Alejandro walked by. Archer felt a little more relaxed, as the tacky halloween props that they had been seeing weren’t enough to scare him, just to focus his gaze on whatever motion activated thing was moving this time. Phantom was paying attention to Archer, mostly getting his cues about how he should react from him, and was able to feel that Archer was only momentarily startled or alarmed, but not frightened. Archer turned his head to Kelly to voice that whatever was going on wasn’t too bad, but as he looked to the side he caught a flash of movement disappearing into the bushes. He shook his head, convincing himself that it must have been a trick of the light, or the movement of a tree, or it’s shadow before beginning his conversation with Kelly.
“Halfway decent so far?” He asked, glancing around once again. “They don’t have too much except for the motion activated things.” He said with a laugh, which quickly quieted when he realized the mail that had gone out a while ago looking for large numbers of volunteers for not only the set up and break down, but participation during the actual event as well. Where had all those people gone to?

Kelly smiled at Archer and his Tokota before glancing around. “Indeed, it is peculiar. I expected something that would at least startle us. Perhaps we should head deeper into the woods.” Kelly said in a plain tone before smiling again. What's up with her smiling and all the time? Alejandro let out a small growl as Kelly nudged his sides. The graying brown Tokota slowly picked up his pace while occasionally glaring at the other pair. “ We aren't alone. There is someone watching us.” Kelly said in a blank tone while returning her gaze to Archer and Phantom. Alejandro let out another growl, this time a louder one, perhaps in an attempt to scare off their stalker, although he or she had already lost the element of surprise.
Well, you can’t actually sneak up on a person with supernatural hearing but anyways. Although, Kelly and Alejandro were more than curious to see who was trying to creep up on them. Kelly was beginning to get hungry with all this nonsense and she was hoping that whoever was stalking them was tasty… Alejandro and Phantom walked deeper and deeper into the forest while an eerie silence had descended on the area. Dense white fog started making its appearance and slightly covered Alejandro’s and Phantom’s paws while Alejandro growled in protest. “I bet this is just dry ice.” Kelly heard someone say in a cocky tone, probably to seem like he was comfortable but his heartbeat said otherwise. These humans were absolutely ridiculous, enough to make Kelly let out a small laugh and Alejandro to roll his eyes in annoyance. “What do you think about this “fog”, Archer?” Kelly asked in a sarcastic tone before gently nudging Alejandro, who momentarily halted. ‘Come on Alex.’ Kelly whispered to the male’s ear but Alejandro seemed reluctant to move forward and instead growled in anger. Kelly slightly raised her head and silently sniffed the air before coughing and shaking her head in an attempt to get that awful scent out of her nose but it didn’t seem to work. “Egh, can’t you smell this?” Kelly asked in disgust.

Archer felt uneasy, but nonetheless followed Kelly and Alejandro further into the woods. He felt uneasy when Kelly said someone was watching them. “What do you mean someone is watching us?” He asked, looking around before turning sharply in his saddle to glance behind them. Still nothing. He thought he saw a flash of movement off to the right, but as soon as he blinked he couldn’t pick it up again. Phantom had picked up on Archer’s uneasiness, and swung his head around, nose raised in the air as he sorted through the scents, then joined Alejandro with his growls. As the two of them rounded a corner, dense, white fog flowed over the ground from two or three different spaces in the trees. “Fog machines?” Archer asked, trying to look at the scene analytically. Phantom slowed to a stop behind Alejandro, and Archer didn’t think too much of it until he tried to get him to move forwards and the roan wouldn’t budge. Archer’s nose twitched as the smell of the fog rolled over him, but said nothing, looking through the mist. He heard a twig snap from behind him, and whirled around in his saddle, and was alarmed to see a variety of shapes emerging from the mist behind them. “Kelly!” He shouted, alarmed that the staggering, moaning shapes were getting closer. Phantom yipped and skittered to the side with alarm, before bolting into the fog, continuing on the path that they had already been heading before the fog machines had turned on. Archer blinked, trying to see where Phantom was going, before it suddenly cleared, leaving him standing at the edge of the forest that opened up into a field of corn. A path had been cut into it, and as Archer looked around, he wondered if this was the corn maze that everyone had been talking about. “Kelly?” He called out, trying to figure where she went, while patting Phantom and trying to calm him down a bit, despite the fact that his own heart was racing as well from the close scare they had just had.

Kelly smiled as she and Alejandro quietly walked around the forest, heading towards the corn maze. ‘Poor Archer must be terrified by now’ Alejandro thought before slightly smiling. Kelly nodded before halting the graying brown and jumping on the leather saddle on top of his back. Alejandro shook his head before he began walking as quietly as he could. As he neared the maze, he picked up his pace and stopped caring about whether he was silent or not. Alejandro soon slowed down as Archer and Phantom both turned their heads towards the noise which Alex was causing. “Here you are Archer… I thought Phantom and you had gotten in the maze already. Were you waiting for me?” Kelly said, her voice having a rather sarcastic tone, something anything but unusual as she almost always spoke in a sarcastic tone. Alejandro rolled his blue grey eyes before glaring at Phantom. ‘We should let them know the problem has been taken care off...’ Alejandro thought before slightly turning his head right and upwards, trying to look at his handler. Kelly smiled and shook her head before she leaned forward and whispered “Not just yet Alejandro.” into the Tokota’s ear. The graying male nodded before returning his gaze to Phantom, eyeing him carefully. For some reason, Alex wasn’t certain if Phantom was to be trusted but then again, he was known for his trust issues, one of the many attributes he and his handler shared. “So, are you just going to stand there and look at me or are we going in the corn maze?” Kelly asked in a plain tone before a half smile formed on her face. Although, her smile quickly faded away as large dark clouds started gathering in the sky, covering the moon and stars. Kelly and Alejandro both looked up and Kelly muttered some words before all the clouds went away as fast as they had arrived in the first place, leaving the sky crystal clear. A smug smile formed on Kelly’s face as the brunette leaned forward to Alejandro’s neck before rubbing his large head.

Archer’s head swung around as he heard movement off to one side, and breathed a sigh of relief as Kelly and Alejandro emerged from the forest. As she mentioned the maze, Archer shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. “We were waiting for you guys, and I figured it might be best if I tried to calm Phantom down a little bit.” He said, patting the half mane’s longer fur on his neck, trying to control his breathing- Kelly and Alejandro’s appearance had startled him slightly. “Let’s get on with it then.” He said, trying to be confident as he guided Phantom into the rows of corn. The dried stalks crackled under Phantom’s paws as he moved into the maze, and while Archer could see over the rows of waving corn initially, the ground sloped downwards, leaving him only able to see the little cut out area that he was in. The corn was draped occasionally with spots of spiderwebs and large fake spiders, but other than that it seemed relatively quiet, except of the crunch of Alejandro’s paws on the stalks behind them, and the rustling of the corn in the wind. Somewhat wary, Archer was cautious each time they rounded a corner, but was surprised that he never found anyone. He wondered if it was because the event coordinators didn’t want a bunch of scared tokotas plowing through the corn maze and ruining it for the other folks. Archer managed to relax, and enjoyed looking at the various decorations on the sides of the corn, and though it took a while, he saw the exit up ahead. “Hey Kelly, I think that’s the exit up there!” He said, and just as the words had left his mouth, a rustling sound came from behind them. As Archer turned, a large, disfigured shape with a pair of antlers rose above the corn stalks and let out a low, eerie moan. Phantom wasn’t having any of it, and flattened his ears before skittering to the side and bolting out of the maze. He charged down the path, with Archer somewhat pleased that they had left the large...thing behind. He noticed that Kelly and Alejandro had been left behind, and gripped Phantom’s reins, pulling back and gradually slowing the roan to a stop while he waited for Kelly and Alejandro to catch up.

Kelly smiled at Archer, although he probably couldn’t see it due to the weather and gently nudged Alejandro’s belly but Alex seemed like he was off time and space. Kelly nudged the merle again, in hopes that he would snap out of it but when his eyes turned white, Kelly sighed in frustration. “Seriously?” Kelly yelled in a frustrated tone and Alejandro let out an eerie moan before his eyes turned back to their greyish blue colour. Alejandro let out a loud growl before he bolted off towards Archer and Phantom, his heart beating faster than ever. In a matter of minutes, Kelly and Alejandro arrived in the exit of the corn maze and Kelly jumped off Alejandro’s saddle, letting the male Tokota calm down a bit. “I’ll get you back for this!” Kelly yelled in anger before glaring at Archer and his Tokota. Thankfully, Alex calmed down relatively quickly and Kelly mounted him again before leading the way away from that corn maze and towards a distant cave. Kelly would often turn her head backwards, to check up on Archer and Phantom, although they made it to the cave without any more paranormal obstacles, just some fake spiders and motion activated bats which would screech as you passed by but other than that, nothing. To Kelly, it seemed like the event coordinators were either utterly stupid or they had no idea what scary truly means. As soon as the group reached the cave, Kelly pulled on Alejandro’s reins, halting him before she jumped off his saddle once more and glared at Archer. “We are almost done.” Kelly said as she smiled with excitement before grabbing Alejandro’s reins once more and leading him inside the cave, which wasn’t a single cave but a whole system of caves and tunnels, as they were about to find out. Archer and his Tokota were behind Kelly, following closely. The group had ventured deep into the cave by now, keeping a steady pace and a cool temperament. Suddenly, a soft breeze starting blowing inside the cave, hinting the exit was close so they followed the breeze but instead of one exit, they reached two. The point was, which one was the right one?

Archer followed Kelly and Alejandro into the caves, somewhat relieved that they would be taking the lead for now. While a few more of the tacky spiders and spiderwebs didn’t scare him, some of the motion sensor bats made him and Phantom flinch as they started up their screeches and fluttering their wings. Phantom picked up the pace as Archer felt a fresh gust of air on his face, and Archer felt relieved as Kelly and Alejandro picked up the pace as well. While the haunted toko ride had been fun, Archer was still a little spooked by some of the scares, though unwilling to admit it to Kelly. Alejandro stopped ahead of them, and Archer rode up next to Kelly to see what was the matter. Ahead, there were two branches in the tunnel- one that continued straight ahead and another that branched off at a forty-five-degree angle. Archer looked between the two of them, unsure of what route they should take. As he glanced between them, he heard a moan come from the exit straight ahead of them, then a loud, slow, thumping noise accompanied with the rattle and clink of metal. Phantom flattened his ears as the sounds drew closer to them, and Archer looked to Kelly to suggest that they go through the other exit when he caught movement behind them, and turning, he saw a shape emerge from the darkness and begun to moan and rattle a set of chains held in their hands. Phantom, sensing his handler’s fear and not having anything of the new clanking and rattling behind him, bolted and turned into the side tunnel, running quickly through a relatively straight pass before they were suddenly outside and in the open- they had ran straight out of the caves. Archer shuddered, trying to calm himself down while he worked on settling down an uneasy Phantom. To help his tokota calm down, Archer reached into the saddle bags to get some of the tokota treats that Kelly had bought for them before the ride and hopped off, walking around to Phantom’s head and giving him a couple of the treats as a reward, and patting the half mane’s neck and face, scratching him in a spot behind his ear that he liked while Archer waited for Kelly and Alejandro to come out of the cave system.

Kelly smiled and her hazel eyes brightened, as Archer had picked the correct tunnel to follow, and she rubbed Alejandro’s head for a few moments before the greying brown merle understood what Kelly wanted him to do, so he began walking towards Archer and Phantom, who had already left the cave system. Kelly wasn't really in the mood for a ‘slow down and enjoy the ride’ walk so she nudged Alex’s belly, causing him to growl in anger before he bolted off towards the exit. Only meters from the exit, Alejandro slowed down once more and he slowly walked outside, where the group had found themselves in a large meadow filled with white daisies. Kelly jumped off the leather saddle and smiled at Archer before lifting her head and turning her gaze up towards the sky. Alejandro and the others mimicked her and they were glad they did, as Kelly made all the dark clouds fade away from the sky, exposing a magnificent full moon. As soon as the clouds had vanished, large groups of fireflies began making their appearances, making the scene even more magical than it already was. Two Tokotas, two handlers, fireflies and the moon...
