The group of tokotas sat in a circle, discussing where they should patrol next. Akeri remained mostly quiet while Amaya, Nike, and Xavier were discussing the different locations.
“What about the hills?” Akeri suggested, picking her head up from her paws. “We get a lot of our food from there- in the summer the caribou and deer like to stay on them because the moving air makes things cooler, while also providing a source of fresh water.” She paused, thinking for a moment, and remembered what the landscape looked like when it was lush and green, not covered in layers and layers of white snow. She gave herself a shake, grumbling about her short fur. “Also, the caves are there. Some might have flooded or collapsed.” She suggested gently, knowing the importance of what was contained within the caves- their method of communicating with their ancestors and the great spirit Aippaq. The camp had finally settled down, with most of the able and fit warriors already off hunting and seeing what their territory now looked like, leaving only a few back to help mend the dens. The air now carried the feeling of purpose, and a low hum filled the air as tokotas communicated, working together to repair the camp.
Amaya searched the clearing her amber eyes catching the bright eyes of Nike, a grey piebald male with a strange, short tail, and her trusted deputy and friend.
She realized with a bit of chagrin that she had neglected to assign herself to a patrol. Perhaps her deputy had done the same? Trotting forward, she stopped when she was within a few inches of the larger male.
“Anywhere I can help?” She asked. Nike had managed most of the patrols, and would have a better idea than she would about where they were lacking.
