I know I did not make you a birthday picture this year. Late like always, eh?

I had Japanese tea classes that day. The scroll in the mizuya we looked at made me think of you. It said "Ho oh, kore dojo." I'm sorry, I cannot figure out the old kanji to show it to you. The first kanji looked like the current kanji for heart though with a " mark which means that the kanji is repeated to make "Ho-oh," 心”. Perhaps it is the original Chinese characters given the time the scroll was written. Anyways it literally translates to, "Step step, here dojo" and means "At every step, here is the dojo" or "The place of learning is at every step." The characters were written boldly with little feathered strokes that lifted at their ends upwards. It felt comforting, reassuring, and nurturing like a mother's arms to me. We shared our interpretations. I started to softly tear so the sensei did not pressure me to speak my mind that day.

Then we discussed the flowers and hanging basket that hey were gently sat in. the baskets was modelled after a particular fisherman's basket from a particular river in Kyoto. The straw-colored weaves were done in triangular patterns like so...

...which to me resembles ripples of water in a river. The flowers were little white flowers whose name I can't remember, and a lovely purple flower unfortunately called Toad's Lilly in English. I think you'd have liked them though. When the buds are closed, they resemble paint brushes.

I served my kohais, the beginner students, tea and Machi-san, our sweet old helper lady, made me some tea in the back room after I cleaned up.

We have a certain order to things in the tea room. I practice the Sen no Rikyu tradition of tea with the Urasenki Foundation. His tradition is adopted from common villagers and values simplicity, thoughtfulness, and being wholly present in the moment.

One of the first things we do when receiving a bowl of tea as a guest is that we place the bowl between us and the next guest and say, "Before," inviting them to take this tea before we receive our own. Typically, they decline, and we take the tea that was made for us for ourselves to drink as theirs is being made by the host. Before we drink, we raise the bowl up to the sky and bow our head slightly in a gesture called "kansha." This is giving thanks to everything and everyone that went into making this tea, from the host who prepared it all the way down to the elements of nature that allowed for the plant to grow. When I made my tea, I struggled not to think of how much I wished I could be making this tea for you tat day, and when Machi-san gave me my tea, I combined my kansha with my invitation for you, up in heaven, to have the first drink. I hope you could taste some of the creamy macha Machi-san has made.

I wanted to come home and make a picture of you receiving the bowl in heaven to complete the act, but unfortunately, there was just not the time in the day for me to do so. I ope that you enjoyed the tea that I could give you.

At the end of class, I asked sensei if I could share my interpretation of the scroll then. While everyone else believed that it many that in every moment, you can learn something, I also thought of the reverse. I thought that additionally, it meant that everything that you have learned and everyone whom you have met up to the point that you are now in your life will continue to inform every step that you take from here. And, of course, I thought of you.

Much love, sweet angel. I hope your birthday was a good one.

Oh, yeah! And I collected your birthday presents here:
I know you liked posting them all together yourself, so here's to keeping the tradition up.

Never forget 2 by MroczniaK

Today is Cecilia Lovera's birthday.
She became a true angel in March last year, but her love and her inspiration has never left us. Her friend MroczniaK has called together the community in memory and celebration of her, to create and share artwork for Ceci of her raver lollipop angel. Hmm. Sounds familiar, doesn't it
