Behind the Scenes
Lyle stood with Joey in the entryway to the office, watching as the new guy situated himself. “Why’s he here?” Joey asked. “I thought the place was closing.”
Lyle shrugged. “Maybe they just needed someone to watch over everything.” He read the guard’s nametag. Fritz Smith. It kind of sounded familiar, like he’d heard that name mentioned before. Had he been an employee at the old restaurant? Lyle didn’t recognize his face.
“Maybe Percy knows,” Joey suggested.
Lyle glanced at Joey quickly, thinking for a second the boy had read his mind. Percy said it was possible and had been working on teaching the two of them a few tricks like that. But then he realized Joey was still on the previous subject. “Let’s ask,” Lyle replied.
With a few minutes until midnight, the game had not yet begun, so Percy was still out of his box roaming. “You two already take a look at the new guy?” he asked.
“Yeah,” said Lyle. “You know why he’s here?”
