The Children of the Stoics
By Kage Edwards, October 31, 2023
My life was scary at eight,
I chose survival.
But when I did, I felt her.
A girl followed me.
Two years, we met in a dream.
We played on grass covered cliffs,
Waterfalls. A picnic.
We went to leave… and she tripped.
I woke, she was gone.
I was never quite whole again.
I never knew who she was.
A mom? A daughter?
Girlfriend? None of these were her.
My guardian angel, then.
Who else could she be?
Of course, those I loved,
They never would lie to me.
A soul mourned her friend that night,
When a kid hit ten.
Ev'ryone wanted [him] to fight,
just to survive them.
Twenty years passed by,
Finally, they met again.
She held the whole time.
Let the damned call it a sin.
