Geodesic geometry: Buckyball/soccerball/truncated-icosahedron

3D-modeled in SketchUp, rendered in Kerkythea

For 3D SketchUp model, visit Google's 3D Warehouse: Buckyball Sphere

SketchUp model includes papercraft "crease pattern" for making paper model, employing "curved folds" origami technique. 60 identical triangular modules, each folded from paper/cardstock, comprise the sphere

Look interesting. I'd like to see it in an environment, with realistic reflections and background. The average person looks at this and has no idea the math behind what is being represented here, or the technique it takes to achieve this result in 3D. What impresses me is that it's polygonal modeling, not a Nurbs surface, you used for this (I'm assuming Sketchup doesn't support Nurbs). That makes the smooth topology, with the beveled creasing around the holes that you achieved here, a little trickier.

I've posted the 3D SketchUp model, online, for anyone interested in experimenting with rendering environments (and I, too, would like to see such a thing)
I really don't have surplus time to engage in even-more computer activities! :stupidme:

(I can't, however, seem to resist the temptation of 3D-modeling challenges)
