I started with 42 gears, but, upon editing, was able to squeeze in an additional 20 (6-tooth, magenta) gears

42 large gears are identical (excepting color, of course)

• Yellow gears: 20 teeth, 12 count
• Cyan gears: 20 teeth, 30 count
• Magenta gears: 6 teeth, 20 count

Yellow gears aligned with icosahedron vertices • Cyan gears aligned with icosahedron-edge mid-points • Magenta gears (hard to see the color, down in between the teeth, I know) are centered on icosahedron faces

Polyhedral basis for gear positioning: Truncated triacontahedron faces

Large-gear rotation axes are aligned with the faces of a truncated triacontahedron, or looked at another way, with the vertices of a frequency 2v, class-I geodesic tessellation of the icosahedron

• Modeled in Google SketchUp
• 10 frames; rendered in Kerkythea
• Animated in Sothink SWF Quicker

A perfect working system. great.

You HAVE to 3D print this thing.

At the size I want (about 10-12 inch diameter,) 3D printing is, still, way too expensive.

I'm working on getting one of each gear 3D-printed, and using them to make molds & resin castings.

Ah i suppose that is true, albeit there are probably powder printers accurate enough to print it to something like 4 inches or even smaller but they're probably pretty expensive too.
If you're going to cast it (which is quite clever now that you mention it) i wonder if you could just make an aluminium casting which would be even cooler.

Wow!!!! Love it!!! It's super cool!!! I didn't know it was possible...lol [link]
I would really like to make this into a sculpture! Is it possible if you could show me the calculations you did to make this?

So sorry,

I, myself, am producing a couple of kinetic gear sculptures; this one and the 92-gear version.

You should note that I was originally inspired by early geodesic-gear attempts by another artist, Paul Nylander (~bugman123) and he has continued to further develop more of the math than have I.

I could stare at it forever, it's almost hypnotizing in its complexity :D
Great job!

Indeed, it is rather hypnotizing!

Kinda makes me wonder why we all have a predilection for shiny baubles!

I wouldn't ever call it 'bauble' :D
It's more like 'Art'. You surely know how much kinetic art is expanding, this is a pretty original example :-)

I was going to yell; HOW THE F--- DID YOU DO THAT ?!

From looking at your deviations, I'd have to say that I can't do what you do.

You have skills & experience that differs from mine....

well...if you`re talking about loop animation; they are not as intricate or accurate & it`s still flat. I just make up w/ it using still pictures. but thanks for the nice comment

Nope...

I was referring to your character-drawing skills

About all I can manage is crude stick figures :D

but I like your animation better.

I was thinking, "it wasn't that difficult"...
... but that's not quite right.

There are years of:
 • practice, (practice, practice,...)
 • curiosity, and
 • love of geodesic stuff

Thanks, k

I don't want to beat the "gearsphere" theme to death, so I may develop geometry for only 1 or 2 more variations (perhaps, not even that.)
