1520 by Tadarida 1520 by Tadarida
Dresses of 1520 England/France/etc. Time of the Tudor dynasty and Henry VIII.

-Cuffed sleeves, often linen with fur (it was a cold period)
-The inner sleeves often showed the smock/chemise
-Dark colors (no pastels like in "The other Boleyn girl")
-Several types of headdresses (here French hoods)
-Square necklines and waistlines at natural waist
-Front of the kirtle was stiffened to achieve the flat front look

Dresses were usually closed in the front, with a panel pinned to the front, covering the closure.

*** I read some work about French hoods and the white band (read those two, it's really interesting: hathawaysofhaworth.wordpress.c… and frenchrenaissancecostume.com/w…) and I decided to update the picture. In short, the authors postulate that the French hood wasn't a single item that stood on the top of the head but rather a layered structure of a coif, caps and veils and it laid flat on the head. It makes sense to me, because it gives a wearer much more freedom: she can change the fabrics, she can add more jewels or remove it completely and she can wash the organza without destroing the whole headdress. ***

If I remember correctly, the French hood became popular when Anne Boleyn brought it over from Francis's court, yes?

Before that, I believe they were wearing gabled hoods, like Catalina de Aragon.

Actually, there were French hoods before Anne Boleyn :) Look at this portrait of Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon from 1515: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

There's actually debate as to whether that portrait is contemporary to their wedding, as it seems possible that it was painted after Mary Tudor's death, given that her clothing is generally more inline with 30s fashions. Though I agree, there were French hoods in England before Anne! (Whether she popularized them is another issue!)
