This Winged Lion was originally designed for The Beasts of Yore Portfolio, a collection of artwork by 12 different artists depicting many strange, unique and mythical creatures from tales of yore. Each image was accompanied by an original story.

Here is one of my sketches/WIPs for the Beasts of Yore portfolio, and it's a Winged Lion. You probably all know now that lions, including winged ones, hold a special place in my heart, so I was happy to work on this one too. After that are a few scans from my some of my heraldry books, for fun (I LOVE HERALDRY). Obviously the lion, and especially the wings and tail, are very stylized — see the Heraldry book scans for more examples of stylization:
