Welcome to the latest edition of So i herd u liek interviews??. This is the 23rd volume in a series of interviews aimed at finding out about emoticonists from the deviantART community.

This series links with the weekly volumes of 'so i herd u liek emotes??' which have now been running since October 2008

:bulletgreen:The emoticonist</u>:bulletgreen:

This volume’s featured emoticonist is Seiorai. Although fairly new to the emote community she has quickly made a name for herself with an amazing range of beautifully pixelled pieces. I was lucky enough to grab an interview with her.

How and when did you get into making emoticons?

---Not long ago, in August this year ^^ I had promised Sinister-Starfeesh I'd enter her map project, so I like this I made Lovefisher ^^

When you first started making emotes, did you use any tutorials?

Not really. I have had scarce contact with pixelwork over the years of Photoshop work, but I remained with a lasting impression that me and pixelwork will never mix much :lmao:
But I knew some stuff, so I just sort of...looked at other people's emoticons work...then looked up some emote packs to see face expressions and stuff.....

Are there any particular tutorials you have found/created since that you would like to suggest?

....but afterwards I found really useful CookiemagiK's tutorial cookiemagik.deviantart.com/art… fc03.deviantart.net/fs37/f/200…

Where do you get your inspiration / ideas from?

Everywhere xD
I especially enjoy making complex settings for my emotes, little movies, so ideas are not a problem ^__^
Lesse...I remember the last emote idea I got out of a sudden was a couple of days ago...while knitting something :lmao:
...it's still just a sketch on paper tho :paranoid:

Do you try to stick to one particular style and technique, or do you prefer to experiment?

I tried a few styles before finding one I'm comfortable with xD So when it comes to different styles, for now I'm sticking with my current ^^
When it comes to techniques on the other hand, time to grab lab coat and open the secret door of the ultra-secret lab I set up in the basement :plotting:

....*cough* I mean...as long as it includes a heck-load of detailing, I'm willing to experiment any techinque :dummy:

Are there any particular qualities that you feel can make an emote stand out from any other?

Mmm...lesse, of course the pixeling itself. With good pixelwork, even a simply-animated emote can look awesome ^^
But even if the pixeling is a bit lacking here-there, if the idea is original, and if there is detailed work involved, or just something that makes people happy when looking at it...then I think that has chances of being an emote that will stand out

Which programs have you used to create your emoticons? Are there any you can suggest?

I use Photoshop CS2 ^_^ It has the awesome animation window, so I don't have to use both PS and Imageready at the same time :dummy:

To suggest, of course GIMP.
Then Flash, though it's a vector-based program I have seen awesome emotes made with it ^^
You can also use MSpaint, but that takes more patience and color-skill

I would suggest that anyone needing help on free emotes making software should check Emotication's list of awesome resources

Roughly how long does it take you to go from concept to finished emoticon?

Err...who knows? :paranoid:
Haha...actually sometimes I get the idea and open up Photoshop&make it immediately, other times I make sketches (especially when my computer is out of reach) and put them into practice later xD
But let's see...mmm...roughly (excluding simple, 10-minutes stuff) anything from 2 hours to a week, depends also on how much free time I have ^^
But in that don't count the sketches I have since...as long as August :paranoid:

What methods have you used for shading? Do you have a preference?

First I tried pixeling the base xD When I first started making emotes xD
But I failed epically :dummy:
...couldn't get the lighting right for some reason :<
Then I gave up trying to think in pixels and started thinking in CG  *because I was used to thinking in CG, since I had been doing it for like 8 months then* :giggle:
So then it worked xD I shaded it in CG then "copied" the lighting pattern in pixels

Are there any particular effects you've found difficult, or have been unable to create?

Uhh...not really, more like..."lacking the patience for them"
Yeah, perspective xD It's about the only thing that goes over my level of patience at this moment xD;

Which are 3 of your favourite emotes from your personal gallery?

Mm..I think Skyscraper Project - Top Floor by Seiorai, :Follow-the-Way..... by Seiorai and Witch's Room Project Entry by Seiorai

Is there a particular emote in your gallery you would you like to see get more attention. If so, why?

I think... Free Love Stall by Seiorai

Although it's pretty simple indeed, I love the thought, the concept in it n__n

Are there any particular emoticonists you would like to see get more exposure?

I would like to see Mirz123 -- she mostly does smiley-like work, but her pieces touch complex subjects, personality subjects, social problems

Also, JulienPradet ^^
He has only come into the community recently, but progressed rapidly and is now among my favorite emoticonists :dummy:

How did you come up with your emoticon character?

...popular influence is a good answer? :eyes:

Actually Jillian had been my OC for a while, and for her character I had been trying to put the pieces of her story together for some time, but one day a friend wanted me to give her a short story of Jill...
.....and I kinda ended up writing an essay ^^;

Then after some time, when I entered the emoticonists' community, I kept seeing all those people with OCs, and wanted to give my Jillian an emoticon form too xD
Since she's an angel--->halo/wings
Since her favorite color is red-violet--->her emoticon form color xD

Do you feel like the emoticon gallery has progressed during your time as an emoticonist?

Yep
While some time ago there were just a handful of people bold/skilled enough to attempt complex animation, I see more and more emoticonists trying to create mini-stories for their emoti-characters ^^

Where would you like to see emotes go in the future?
I could think of a few, but the most important off the top of my head would be that I would love to see more emotes dealing with everyday, social, personal, inter-human issues...I believe the emoticon gallery, though containing amazing work, is too much restricted to emotes which are happy...or having some heroic adventure in fantasy realms...or simple, smiley-like specific-emotions-expressing emotes.

Are there any trends or styles you'd like to see less of in the gallery?

...do miscats count? :paranoid:
Actually no xD
As every community, the emoticonists one has its "crazes", but I believe that is a good thing, which encourages community spirit :D It's good to be an emoticonist and be able to say....That's OUR craze...:eyes: :lmao:

...partially kidding xD But seriously now, I can't think of any trend or style which could be a negative to the gallery at this moment. I was thinking of saying "flat emotes"...but hey! most of those are made by beginner emoticonists...everybody's gotta start somewhere :D

Is there any advice you would like to give to new emoticonists?

Experiment! Don't be afraid to try new things, it's digital work after all - if you don't like the result just discard the layer ^^
Try not to keep your inspiration sources to one direction only. Sometimes a teapot can give you a neat idea ^^
Also, try to observe things around you, and before you actually start to pixel take the brush in whatever program you are using, and make a sketch in which you combine the colors and give the objects light and shadow. It will prove useful when you get to the pixeling itself

Is there anything else you would like to say?

.....
....if I were you I'd punch me in the face for making you read such a wall of text :paranoid:
...........

But I'm not you so I'm safe :dummy: ...I think xD

If :flirty: and :la: were trapped together in a broken elevator, what would they get up to and what would happen?

Mmmm...I think :flirty: would try all her flirting tricks to get :la:'s attention BUT he wouldn't care because he'd be shouting his lungs off not for help but cause he got a winning beta-tester ticket to Halo 5! :dummy:
Then :flirty: would get mad that she's ignored and she'd turn into :threaten: and :la: would turn into :sprint: and he'd break down the elevator door trying to get away from her and they'd run around in circles while the rescue team sit in the center of the circle looking terrified and desperately trying to decide whether to dial the doctor's or the veterinary's number :lmao:

-Lovefisher- by Seiorai
You just really can’t fault –Lovefisher-. Its an absolutely brilliantly pixelled scene with simple but effective animation.

I HAZ MAGIKZ by Seiorai
I really adore I HAZ MAGIKZ. The simplicity of the shading makes it all the more impressive and despite being static it displays a really great sense of movement

Notre Coin de Paradis by Seiorai
Notre Coin de Paradis is another stunning piece from her gallery with a mountain of detail packed into a small canvas.
