Odium swore he had heard the messenger wrong when they came to deliver the name of his partner and the location of one of his matches for this month’s sparring bouts - he had made the poor sot repeat themselves more than once before accepting what they said. The sea… again. He had just been there last month, and received a dunking during his battle - they wanted him to go back there already? Well he was not about to miss a match, especially after he had signed up and been partnered but he didn’t have to be happy about it. This time he had been told to go to the shore by the docks outside hearth, and he would find his sparring arena there. One plus about his match this month was that he had been partnered with a name he recognized - Octavia. The female was a regular competitor and well known for her skill, which meant that he was in for a good battle. He had set off for Hearth with the dawn, wanting to arrive early and size up the location. Depending on where on the docks they were placing his match, he could very well end up with another soaking before the day was out and he was in no mood to deal with that.

When he arrived at Hearth and made his way to the docks, he stared up and down the shore in confusion for a long moment. There was no sign of the usual crowds anywhere in the sand along the water, and nothing as far as he could see roped off for battle. Slowly he turned to stare at the docks, and growled in annoyance. Crowds were gathered on a single dock, at the bottom of a gangplank leading to a huge ship currently at anchor. The brightly colored ropes reserved for roping off sparring arenas were strung along the railings of the ship’s deck. He sunk to his haunches at the very end of that dock, staring. This was by far the worst location he had ever experienced for a battle. To make matters worse, it appeared an entire crew were still aboard the boat and waiting at the ready to set off. He couldn’t possibly be expected to fight on a moving ship, right?! He snarled at the thought, and that drew the looks of the crowds. He was easily recognizable with his antlers sharpened to tips and stained with old blood, the great boar tusks strapped to their side of his maw and equally pointed and stained. A hush fell over those gathered, awe mixed with fear. He was well known for his violent bursts when angry, and it was very obvious that he was furious right now even if none but he knew of his pure hatred of any water. He was not getting on that sharding boat until he absolutely had to. Stubbornly he settled down on his rump in the middle of the path down the dock to wait for his opponent to show up.

It was getting late as she neared the docks, the trip from Lake Lysa to the shores of the Hungry Wolf no short trip, and yet it was the risk she took when signing up for both levels of competitions. Of course, in her opinion, it was worth it, but it left her little time today as she jogged towards the location of the higher-stakes battle. It was beneficial in its own way, serving to keep her muscles warm and loose as she traveled and eventually she drew close to the crowds. Their eyes turned towards her, a bit of a hush falling across the spectators as her reputation and no doubt her current state caught their attention. Mud still caked her creamy coat, clumps gathered in her longer fur having dried on her trek from the open matches. More noticeable, however, and no doubt the cause of many of the stares was the blood that was still swathed across her face and lower extremities, some still wet enough to glisten in the sun. A few fresh gashses were noticeable as well, clumps of her thick coat missing though she looked little the worse for wear, her partner having been relatively inexperienced in the last bout though she was rather… ambitious.

Still she wouldn’t hold a candle to the name Ulfr had given as her partner this afternoon, his name as recognizable as the intimidating horns and tusks he sported. Horns she could just now spot over the heads of those crowded behind the ropes, the russet color tinting their tips an obvious statement about her competitors experience in the ring.Though he was not necessarily known for his sunny personality he looked even more sour today as she approached, having planted himself squarely in the main pathway towards… was that a ship? ”Fuck. Realization set in as she mumbled the curse beneath her breath, immediately dreading what was about to come but the slightly crazed woman found much more satisfaction in Odiums displeasure and erased any trace of it from her own features.

Instead she sauntered up beside him, daring to stray closer to him than any in the vicinity would have dreamed of, and fixed him with a rather disconcerting smile. ”Looks like the big man is getting creative,” she scoffed eyeing the plank that led aboard the bustling ship, the crew obviously rushing with last minute preparations as Ulfr himself watched from the upper deck. Raising one eyebrow she motioned with her head, ”Don’t let him see you pissed off about it, you know it only makes him enjoy it more.” She laughed throatily, before continuing on towards the unsteady gangway, her bobtail flicking almost jauntily as she strolled away knowing he had no choice but to follow as his pride, like hers, dictated.

The murmuring of the crowd gave away his opponent’s approach behind him, as many even turned away from their not so subtle sideways stares at him to openly gape at Octavia as she approached the docks. He was curious as to why they would gape so, as she was as well known as he and perhaps a little less feared thanks to his unpredictable temper so he had expected a reaction but not such open shock and staring. She must look a sight if she was drawing that sort of attention but he refused to turn and look. He would see what state she was in soon enough when they had to get on the sharding boat. However at the soft cursed exclamation behind him that was clearly her just now noticing the boat, he had to hold back a snort of laughter and agreement. Yes, that was an appropriate reaction to what they were facing today. The amusement he felt was quickly cut off though as Octavia approached him - far too close and familiar for his taste, making his lips twitch in a silent snarl of annoyance - and muttered a comment on the choice on a ship for their battle. Bah, as if she could tell him what to do! Ulfr was just as much flesh and bone as anyone else, and he didn’t give a wit if his anger amused the great male. If he wanted to see that Odium got only locations like this, well it didn’t matter what consequences might await, that male would face the stained points of his horns same as anyone else.

As Octavia strutted away, he glared for a long moment at her backside as she went up the ramp onto the ship. If she was going to act like that he would try extra hard to send her overboard today. Once she was off the gangplank and safely on the deck of the sharding ship though, Odi grudgingly got to his paws and stalked after her. The crowd that had openly gaped after Octavia hurriedly scattered back away from the path to the ship, compressing as much as they could to stay out of his reach on the narrow dock without landing themselves in the sea. Up the gangplank he went, already feeling the soft swaying of the docked ship as the plank shifted slightly under his paws. Growling low, he bounded the last step from the plank onto the deck of the ship and hurriedly made his way to the center, not caring if it didn’t put him as far back from Octavia as he would usually square up to begin a battle. He was not about to give her extra opportunities to send him into the ocean. As he touched down on the deck the crew began bustling about, a pair of deckhands hurrying to pull the plank up while trying to keep as far from him as they could, rolling their eyes in discomfort when their backs were turned towards him.

With a last snarl he sunk himself low into a stalking crouch, thankful for the stance now as the ship jerked underneath him once the anchor was raised and the sails let loose. Trying to ignore the fact that he was soon going to be out at sea with no easy access to land, he faced Octavia and dipped his head stiffly in a signal that he was ready for battle to begin, locking his eyes on her paws so he could watch her every movement once they began.

She couldn’t deny that she reveled in the open stares that those in the crowd so obviously fixed onto her as she approached the gathering. Neck arched she near preened in their shock and awe, strutting down the docks as mud and blood mixed and dripped to stain the sun bleached planks. Despite her serious displeasure at the realization of just what their battlemaster had in store for them today, it did not stop the smirk that pulled at her lips as she sidled up to her opponent. Although she did not miss the indications of his discomfort at her proximity it did nothing to remove that smile from her disheveled features, enjoying that she could so easy ruffle his feathers even before they entered the ring. He did not seem in the mood to chat however, not even giving so much as a huff at her comment before she sauntered up the gangplank and on to the gently rocking ship.

Her metallic eyes cut across the ships deck as she took it all in, mentally taking stock of every surface available to her. This fight would be no quick and easy match, that much she knew as the elite pairings were always a challenge but she felt that familiar tingle of excitement as she readied herself for it. Behind her she could hear the thud of heavy footfalls as Odium no doubt followed behind her. Much as he may dislike the setting for their match, even he wouldn’t dare refuse to fight; pride is a powerful tool. She watched as the silvery male hurried past her and towards the center most part of the boat before spinning around to face her head on. She raised one eyebrow as the deck crew hurried to make themselves scarce or rather get the choice seats to have the best view of what was to come.

With a roll of her slender shoulders she strode forward wordlessly, fixing her silvery gaze onto the horned felvarg. They were rather evenly matched in size and build, an even playing ground but for the tusks and horns that could no doubt prove problematic, as their russet staining made very clear. Bloodreina was never one to shy away from a challenge, rather eager to face it and come out victorious. The element of surprise was gone, Odium so clearly waiting for her to make the first move as he crouched before her. Her tongue flicked out wickedly, running along her fangs as she sank into her stance, weight shifting from one paw to the next as she readied herself. Without any other sound or indication she charged forward, her back legs propelling her directly toward his dangerously sharp tusks with surprising speed. It seemed for all intents and purposes that she planned to crash directly into them, however at the last possible second she made to dart to the left, ducking down low and pushing every muscle she had to fling herself to the side as her jaws gaped and sought purchase on her opponents lower chest or leg. It took every ounce of agility she possessed to maintain her footing, her metallic gaze flicking upwards often as they could to keep an eye on those dangerous points.

Odium had been expecting Octavia to circle around a few times, size him up since this was their first meeting in the battle arena though they both knew of each other from their long standing status as some of the best fighters on Ulfrheim. When she went directly from a standstill to a charge, he had a moment of true surprise at her insanity in coming directly at him - while it wasn’t enough to ruin the entire battle, it slowed him down just enough that as she dodged his reflexive swipe with the tusks he wore on his maw and came at his leg in a near slide she managed to catch him with her jaws as she scrambled to stay upright through the movement. He snarled more out of anger than pain as her teeth closed on his foreleg, used to pain as he was from his monthly battles. Sharding woman, out of her damn mind attacking without so much as taking a few feints at him first. It had worked, too, which made him even angrier. With a sharp tug he ripped his leg from her jaws, sending blood splattering onto the deck beneath his paws. Not pausing to nurse his injury or target Octavia with more accuracy, he lashed out at her with a sharply clawed paw still dripping his own blood and hoping he could rake at least a little bit across her muzzle while turning sharply on his back paws to put distance between the two of them.

The ship lurched under his paws again as the boat drew further away from Hearth’s docks and it caught the current. The sails belled out above them in the strong ocean wind and Odium tried to ignore his racing heart. He had never been on a ship and had never wanted to, either. Yet here he was, Ulfr’s little joke this month. Spaced out far enough from Octavia, he rounded on her and bared his teeth, stalking along threateningly in a circle around her for a long moment and hoping she didn’t choose to charge him so suddenly again - it wouldn’t work a second time. Suddenly increasing his pace, he turned and ran in an attempt to come up behind her, launching himself up and forward with his clawed paws outstretched. If he could land his attack before she was able to dodge he could latch onto her shoulders with teeth and claws alike, giving himself a great opportunity to overcome her and end this battle quickly before they could get much further out to open sea. It did mean potentially getting a mouthful of all that fur she sported, but if he had to choose between getting wet or coughing up hair for days he would choose the hair. He held his breath as he flew through the air, every second ticking by so slowly it felt like an hour as he waited to see if she would be able to react and move away in time to dodge him.

There was a gutteral sound that was almost akin to a purr of satisfaction as her teeth made purchase and closed around his leg. For the second time today that delicious irony taste filling her mouth and running down her lips which had curled into a distorted smile. No doubt her sudden lunge had surprised him somewhat, enough at least for a small chink to form in his armor for she was nothing if not unconventional. There were no rules here. With little thought to the additional tearing he would cause Odium ripped the leg from her jaws, teeth continuing to rake his flesh the entire time until it was extracted. She only caught the movement of his head from her peripheral, instinct kicking in and forcing her to move, luckily the sway of the boat was rolling to the side and gravity was in her favor allowing her paws to scramble and push her away from him.

Not fast enough however, as the tip of that stained tusk raked her muzzle, the point sharpened just for this reason as it sliced skin. Though not terribly deep it stung, and in this ring every punch landed was a point. She halted as Odium danced away from her, pink tongue lashing out to swipe at the blood there, her own now mixed with his as he whirled to face her once more. He circled her steadily, her injury to his leg seeming to slow him down not at all as he postured. She seldom cared for the dramatics of fighting, she was here for the physical contact and proving she was better than her opponent. Her eyes followed him silently, her muscles loose on the chance that he chose to charge her just as she had done to him, rotating slightly to keep him in her line of sight as only an inexperienced fighter would allow their opponent to pass from their line of sight.

Experience is what allowed her to see the shift in his body as he turned quickly and charged at her, leaping as he closed the distance with claws outstretched. His intent was clear, subtlety perhaps not his plan counting on sheer power to overwhelm her, and yet he should have known better. She was no meek newcomer bearing the weight of inexperience. With a snarl both savage and eager she spun as much as she could, her body lunging to meet him head on, the same way she faced everything with reckless abandon.
