Beloved had been in Hlif-Vindr for a few months now, though he didn't quite feel at home yet - nowhere had ever really felt home to him, not even growing up when his parents had loved him so but his adopted brother had constantly made him feel unwanted and unloved. This pack had accepted him, scars and all, but he had yet to truly open up within it. Sure, he worked within the pack with the dedication of every other member but he didn't socialize much - if he was not needed for a specific job he was often out and about in the woods and meadows with the goats he raised and tended. Today was a job day though, and an important one. Kaladin had called for an all hands on deck meeting as the sun rose that morning, and brought the pack news of the darkness that was spreading over the Vale of Whispers. No one had any idea where it had come from, but many fels had gone to explore it when it first appeared and none had come back. Kal had asked that every available, able bodied member of the pack find a partner or two and head out to the vale to try and find the source of this darkness and stop it from spreading further. Unfortunately this was where Beloved's distance from the other members of the pack handicapped him - most at the meeting had immediately paired up with friends or family to take on this task, and set off. Now Beloved sat alone at the center of the pack camp, staring at the raised platform where Kal had delivered his news from and wondering how he was going to help with this mess. His goats could manage on their own for the day, and he was determined to go to the Vale and assist in fighting off this darkness. Kaladin had expressly forbid members from going in alone, however, and sweet fool that he was, Beloved had no one he could turn to as a partner. Hopefully someone else new to the pack would be looking for a partner.... but who?

The cream pelted female made her way to the gathering Kaladin had called. She found a soft patch of budding grass to sit on and waited for him to tell the pack what the meeting was about. When he spoke, everyone that had been chatting amongst themselves fell quiet, and even more so as Kaladin spoke of what was happening. The Vale of Whispers was being consumed by a mysterious darkness. Vargs from all over were disappearing as they entered, exploring what could be the cause. A shiver ran down Alice’s spine and she felt her fur prickling at the cool atmosphere that seemed to settle over everyone. Kaladin called for his best to go forth and find a way to stop this, but never alone. Not alone? Why would anyone travel into some unknown darkness… alone? Even as confident as Alice tended to be, she knew that wasn’t a smart move, and it did send a ripple of chill down her. This didn’t sound good at all. In that speck of fear though, curiosity was bubbling over and she couldn’t wait to find out what was going on.
As everyone started to stand and make their way over to their friends, in hopes to go together to help find a way to stop the darkness, something became very clear to Alice. She didn’t have any really close friends within the pack, regardless of how long she had been here, she had failed to make any close friends. Unfortunately she tended to have her head in the clouds, and this kept her from forming close bonds if she wasn’t careful. Most had found someone to pal along with to the Vale of Whispers, and she almost felt defeated, knowing she wouldn’t be able to go when out of the corner of her eye she spotted a Varg of smallish stature, sitting alone and looking like he was in the same position as her. Alice quickly bounded to her feet and trotted over to him. “Hello! My name is Alice. I don’t think we have met?” She smiled at the black and white male and offered a paw. “I noticed that you didn’t have anyone to go with to the Vale either? I was hoping you weren’t just waiting for someone but maybe wanted to go with.. Uh… me?” She asked him sheepishly, hoping she wasn’t being too pushy.

Beloved sat on the grass at the center of the pack camp, as everyone around him trickled off to find their partners and work through exploring the Vale. He watched as if it were slow motion as everyone paired up and left, the crowd slowly thinning out. He should get up and look for a partner, but he could think of no one that he could ask. Losing himself for a moment in the daze and disappointment of realization, he didn't notice as the cream female trotted over to him eagerly. At her happy introduction he startled into the present once more, twitching slightly as it caught him off guard. Blinking rapidly, the delicate male turned to stare at Alice in shock. Had she just asked him to partner with her? He must have heard that wrong. "H-hello. No I don't believe we've met. I haven't been a part of the pack long and I'm not around camp much... I, well did you really ask me to partner with you for the search parties? I was a bit lost in myself you see and I think I may have heard you wrong." He tilted his head at her, pausing for a long moment before realizing she had introduced herself and he had neglected to return the courtesy. "Oh, apologies. I'm...." He paused again, feeling awkward as he forced his name out. "My given name is Beloved. Most just call me Fool though..." As he finally said it, he stiffened up and met her gaze with somewhat of a challenge in his eye. More oft than not, offering up his name only won him scorn, laughter, and mocking. Who would believe that anyone would name their child Beloved? He was used to the reactions his name brought but they still cut at him if he didn't brace himself first. Still, if this female really had asked him to partner with her and search the Vale for clues of where the missing residents of Ulfrheim had gone, he wanted to accept that offer. She could mock him or choose to believe he was evading giving his real name, so long as she truly wanted him to go with her. He just wanted to be useful, for once.

The cream female shifted her weight and sat in front of the male. Though he was dwarfed, he matched her for size almost and that made Alice feel a bit more comfortable. She felt like everyone always towered over her and not that she was easily intimidated, but when talking to someone she didn’t know, she always kept herself a bit reserved in case they didn’t want to be bothered with her. When the male snapped to attention at her question she realized had she disturbed his thoughts and gave a slight flinch. She didn’t mean to disturb him, maybe he was waiting for someone… His voice sounded shocked when he spoke and she looked at him with curiosity. She wondered why he seemed so surprised that someone would want to partner with him. This was for the good of Ulfheim right? Maybe he already had someone he was waiting for someone else and he was just trying to be polite and not tell her no right off the bat. She hoped this wasn’t sure and a wave of self consciousness came over her. Oh no.. Maybe she was intruding and put him on the spot! “No.. you heard right, I asked if you would like to pair up with me. That is if you aren’t waiting for someone already. I would hate to intrude..” She sputtered out in one quick breath. The small male introduced himself as Beloved, and his posture immediately stiffened. This struck her as odd? Why the sudden change in behavior. “Hi Beloved! Very nice to meet you.” She replied with a soft smile. Completely unphased by his name, she spoke again; “I saw you sitting here alone and I assumed that you didn’t have anyone to go with and well I don’t have anyone to go with.. I was hoping that meant we could go together, but I totally understand if you don’t want to..” She finished talking by looking down at her paws, ears going back a bit to flatten against her head.

Beloved held himself still, watching her with care as she listened to his introduction. She didn't so much as blink an eye at his name when it was offered, and immediately replied with kindness. How strange... he rarely had anyone treat him so right away, but it felt nice to be offered such friendliness without the undertones of suspicion that usually came from others when he offered his strange name. As she continued speaking, she seemed rather nervous, practically babbling out her request and assurances that she didn't want to be a bother if he was waiting for another to partner with. Relief washed through him and he waited until she finished her quick burst of words before giving her a small smile and nodding. "You assumed right, I didn't have anyone to go with. I was waiting here to see if anyone else might need a partner, actually. I'd be happy to partner with you. We could set off now, and if we take it at an easy jog we should get there in decent time.... Thank you, for offering to pair up with me. Likely if you hadn't, I would have been left here in camp while everyone else took part in this search..." The last bit he added quietly, looking at the ground as he spoke. He hated to admit it, but he knew it was true - they were nearly alone in the meeting grounds now and those who were still present were already paired up and simply settled down to talk strategy before they set off. Perhaps this would help him push himself more to make friends within the pack in future, knowing how close he had come to being useless today. But now, he had Alice here willing to give him a chance, and that was something.
"If we're going, we should take a pack and a lantern each like Kaladin suggested in his announcement." Beloved added, gesturing to the equipment pile that had been set up nearby with pre-filled satchels and lanterns. In a hurry to be on their way, now that he had managed to get a partner by some crazy blessing of the gods, he moved over without waiting for her voiced agreement to grab one of each item, shrugging carefully into one of the smaller satchels that had been laid out and gently picking up one of the pack's signature lanterns then turning to face Alice once more. "Do you want to take the lead, once you're ready?"

Alice’s face lit up as the small white male nodded and told her that she was not wrong. He wasn’t waiting for anyone! She held back some excitement, but the smile on her face probably gave most of it away. This was fantastic, she wouldn’t have to stay behind like usual and would finally feel like she was doing something for this pack. People couldn’t claim she just had her head in the clouds anymore. Well… They could but she would know she had helped and that is all that mattered. She jumped to her feet with haste and listened intently as he explained that they could be off quickly if she wanted to. She started nodding in understanding before he even finished speaking. “I understand the being left behind.. I usually am too. Or just do things on my own..” She said, her expression softening towards the male. When Beloved started making his way over to the pile of supplies, Alice followed behind him. She watched him pick up a lantern and pack, and was about to offer to help, however he seemed like he had it down and she didn’t want to make him feel as if he couldn’t. She could tell that this meant as much, if not more to him than herself. Her paws stretched into the ground, claws moving over the dirt and she gave a small stretch of her legs. She was warming up her muscles so that they could travel at a decent pace toward the Vale. “I’m ready, got everything?” She asked with a smile. When she looked him over and saw that he was ready, Alice started heading out of the pack gathering grounds and quickly went from a slow trot to a faster paced canter. She kept a close eye on Beloved, making sure he could keep up with the gear and that she didn’t get ahead of him. It was vital that they stay together in this, as Kaladin had mentioned. At this pace Alice knew it wouldn’t take them terribly long to get to the vale and she began mentally bracing herself for whatever was to come.
