Sylphier ~

Devan paced along the border of the pack's camp anxiously, eyes flickering about in search for his partner for this specific job they had been assigned. Kitsune and he had gone hunting last week in an attempt to rid the area of a large unruly snake that was causing issues, and when Kaladin had received the call to the pack for help on another large beast that was wrecking havoc he had decided that the same pair should go deal with this one, as they had the most experience out of the pack members in dealing with such threats. This time the threat was... much bigger though. A mammoth, a creature out of legend that hadn't been seen on Ulfrheim in uncounted years had surfaced from somewhere, no one was even sure where it had come from but it was trampling through Hearth and the need for help was extremely urgent. Kaladin had found Devan first and told him to wait here for Kitsune, who he had run off to find next. They needed to get out there soon, or the entirety of Hearth would be leveled before they could remove or destroy the great beast. Devan was not so sure the beast meant any harm - Kaladin's report had said that it was wandering around looking quite confused and making what most would call distressed sounds. If it had been in the depths of some unknown cave for as long as was thought, it likely was half blinded by the light and confused by creatures it had not encountered in any living memory. He hoped Kitsune would agree with him, and they could try to herd the best out of the town safely to control the situation, rather than having to put such a rare beast that all had thought extinct until today. But Hearth was their priority - aside from it being the livelihood of many vargs, it was their own base town for operations outside of their nomadic camp. It was essential to save as much of the town as possible. Now if only Kitsune would arrive so they could be on their way!

Kitsune had been found by her pack leader a short time after Devan had been found. She had been with Cerberus and Isadora having a nice lunch when the alpha asked to speak with her.
When she heard the news of yet another beast roaming around, this time a creature she had heard only in stories and legends, right in their home turf she was shocked. She, of course, agreed to go with Devan to potentially sort out what was going on with the Mammoth and, Fenrir willing, hopefully stop the beast without harm to them or any other Felvargs in the area. She figured Devan would feel as she did but until she spoke with him she would begin to prepare for either scenario.
It took her a bit of time to go and grab her satchel that she stuck a couple things in... Just in case the two Felvargs needed something. As she was walking to where Kaladin said he would be waiting for her she thought about the poor beast. From what Kaladin had said they thought the beast had stumbled out from some cave and was just confused and scared. She thought she had heard in passing somewhere that these beasts traveled in a herd similar to that of some of the modern beasts, or so it was thought. If this was true the poor thing was probably missing is herd and was just lost and confused without it's family. Finally she reached Devan and nodded at him. "Looks like we did such a good job last time that they're trusting us with it again." Her voice held a bit of humor in it as she recalled when the snake beast almost gulped her up.
"what is our plan this time?" She asked, shifting weight from paw to paw, eager to get going.

Devan stopped his pacing and gave a sigh of relief when Kitsune came into sight. He snorted out a laugh at her comment. "Well I mean we did manage to stop the beast at least, last time. This one seems a lot ... larger though. I'm not so sure about this one. I think we should try to herd it out of the town with as little new damage as possible. Hopefully once it's out in the open and not stomping on houses anymore it will be a bit more content and find it's way?" He suggested, watching her to see if she felt comfortable with this plan. He shifted his satchel as he waited, settling it so it could withstand the run they were about to make with as little jouncing about as possible, since it held mostly his treasured scribe supplies. As soon as they had stopped the beast - one way or another - he planned on settling down to sketch it and write an account of his encounter with it while it was fresh in his mind. "If it can't be herded out of the town then we've no choice but to bring it down with force, but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that." He added, satisfied now with the position of his satchel. "We should hurry, if we take too long to get there he could level the whole town." Devan turned to face the forest, planning to follow the treeline of Melrakki until they reached the river and then make their way to the bridge to cross over into Hearth. Taking the initiative to lead this time, he didn't wait for her agreement but set off through the trees at a run, trusting Kitsune would follow just as quickly so they could take care of this threat sooner rather than later.

Kitsune also turned to face the treeline of Melrakki and began following Devan, trusting him to take them where they need to be. With the long legs of the titan she was easily able to catch up to the surprisingly fast Devan, her eyes searching the area above them, her satchel bouncing against her shoulder. "I agree though. I would like to take the beast down as peacefully as we possibly can. I think that getting it away from the village is a very good idea.... We do not want our pack base, or anyone else's home, leveled by the poor thing." she shook her head, worry suddenly hitting her.
What if they could not get the beast out of the town...? No, she could not think that way. "If we do have to take it down by force, however, I am prepared." as she the words left her mouth Kitsune was thinking about the plan of attack, so to speak. "I heard a rumor that it was scared of the gold flecked eels that we find swimming around in the lakes... It just so happens I have a couple." she smiled over at Devan as they continued on their way. "I do not really want to scare the beast more than it already is but the eels may be one of our only ways of getting it to go where we want."

"What a strange thing for a creature to dislike." Devan shook his head in wonder at Kitsune's comment as he loped along towards the village. It was not long before they broke through the trees and had to turn to follow the river, and in the open Devan pushed for more speed as they drew ever closer to their goal. The sooner they could get this handled, the better. As Kitsune had said, their pack base and many homes of the vargs who lived in Hearth were at stake. Saving his breath for the run and the possible battle ahead of them, he kept silent as they thundered down the sandy banks of the river and turned onto the wooden bridge towards Hearth. Already he could see some of the destruction caused by the great beast - there were trees snapped in two, bushes crushed into the ground, and great tracks from his giant hooves along the road. He tried not to worry about what they would do if the beast could not be reasoned with or led out of the town willingly as he stared at the massive prints in the dirt. No, best not worry about that unless they had no other choice.
He slowed his pace as the village came into sight then, and crowds of worried village residents crowded along the streets crying, staring in shock, or simply curled up on the ground in despair at the destruction of their homes. He and Kitsune were easily recognizable, and some vargs cheered or called out hopefully as the pair passed through the crown to enter the town and look upon the mess the great mammoth had wrought. Swathes of homes were damaged or destroyed entirely already where it had first wandered into the village, looking as if the beast had flailed about in confusion once among the buildings. He could see it's great head in the distance - it appeared to simply be pacing now in a stretch of the village that had been pounded flat under it's hooves. It was making trumpeting noises, and to Devan at least they did sound distressed. "I think it might believe it's trapped." He commented to Kitsune, slowing to a walk now and approaching it with great caution.

Her eyes briefly flitted about the area looking for potential escape routes for the beast as well as potential dangers for it and the Felvargs it was harrassing. Kitsune slowed to a walk as well, her eyes following the head of the beast. "Poor thing..." she murmured, looking at Devan. "Of course you know we must be careful, so how would you like to approach this?" She asked as she surveyed the damage. Villagers were cheering for them, but others were cowering as the beast trumpeted again, its great trunk moving all about in the air. The ground was trampled in places, homes in several states of destruction - debris was everywhere. "I think you might be right on how it thinks. These are not the actions of a crazed beast... they're the actions of a scared one. One that cannot figure out what is going on." She tilted her head to the side as they cautiously approached, ready to hear his ideas.

Devan was silent for a moment as they padded slowly closer to the huge creature, thinking about possible ways to get it out with the least additional damage to the village. "I think we should try herding it out of here - you on it's left, me on the right - and taking it out the way it came in. That way there is only the one section that needs repair, and hopefully we can avoid any new damage at all. If we sneak up to it, and get in position before getting it's attention, that should help too. So it doesn't think we're chasing it and run into the part of town that doesn't have any damage yet." He reasoned, nodding to himself as he spoke out his thoughts. It was as good a plan as any, given they had come here with no time to prepare and make something better. "Come on." He added, signaling Kitsune to swing around the mammoth's left while he lowered himself into a cautious crouch and stalked slowly, quietly behind it to approach from the right. From his spot crouched to the right of the beast he could no longer see Kitsune, but he hoped she had gone ahead with his plan. Counting to twenty to give her time to get in position, he let out a breath he had been holding and stood up to his full height, feet braced well apart in case he needed to avoid attacks or run. "Now!" He cried out for Kitsune, drawing the beast's attention to him. He stood his ground between it and the remaining undamaged houses as it swung the great tusked head towards him, rolling it's eyes wildly. A disconnected part of his mind took the moment in as best it could so he could recount it later and possible sketch out a picture of the beast, while his main focus was on the creature. He snarled at it, more as a way to drive it where he wanted than as a threat, bounding back and forth along it's right side to try and herd it around and back out of town and hoped Kitsune was working on it's other side in a similar fashion.

ThePaintedKitsune ~

Kitsune nodded in agreement at this idea. Devan was intelligent and she had expected nothing less than a good plan from him. She cautiously went to the beast's left keeping an eye on the mammoth the entire time, taking silent steps towards the goal. The beast was preoccupied making noise and stomping its large... feet? hooves? What does one call the things the beast walks on... She shook her head trying to focus herself again. Devan had long since been out of sight and she briefly worried about her packmate but she had to keep good faith that neither of them would be trampled by this plan. She heard him cry "Now!" and sprang into action coming up from the crouch in a fluid motion and ready to move. Kitsune was growling and snarling at the beast - though briefly its attention was on Devan - hoping that it would run from her rather than fight and knew that Devan would be doing something similar on its opposite side. For a moment she thought the beast was going to attack, her body tensing and ready to run or help Devan, but instead the plan worked and the beast began to move away from the undamaged parts of the village as well as the damaged parts moving farther into uninhabited territory where, hopefully, the two Felvargs could figure out what to do with it from there.
As the beast realized it was free from the small houses and Felvargs it seemed to visibly relax, at least as much as it could with two other snarling Felvargs at its flanks. Kitsune yelled to Devan to back off a bit and slowly the two of them stopped as the beast continued to run. When it realized it was no longer being chased it too stopped and stood there eyeing the two of them warily. Kitsune was hesitant to approach the beast - but for now it seemed peaceful. She hoped Devan would agree with her plan to watch the beast, at least for a few hours, and make sure it did not go back to the village. All in all though it was a good day.
