Description

• ARSINOE III., The Bronze Head of [I.]:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsinoe_III

I finally got to this bronze in early March 2026 at the MACA - the Head of Arsinoe III, a queen of Hellenistic Egypt.

While I also have a front-facing portrait, I find her profile much more compelling, it feels more vivid and escapes the usual canonical proportions.

The depiction seems realistic rather than idealized or standardized.

Late 3rd-early 2nd c. BC,

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period.

'The head, originally part of a statue, is one of the few bronzes of the Hellenistic Period that have survived to the present day' [Desc txt ©MACA].

Acquired in Egypt by Giuseppe Acerbi [1773–1846] a Mantua-area-born explorer, collector, and diplomat, and donated to the city of Mantua in 1840.

Inv. 6774.
