• 5 DANCERS | DANAIDS Set, Portrayal Close-up III.:

The Roman-cast bronze statue copying a Greek model.

It is believed to represent either a dancer, or one of the mythological Danaids [daughters of King Danaus], or a water bearer.

H = c. 1.5 m.

Added or inlaid decorative details: copper lips and the diadem, white bone or ivory discs for the sclera, with rounded grey, blue, or black stones for the iris and pupils.

From the Square Peristyle of the Villa dei Papiri [Ercolano, Campania, Italy].

The 1st c. BC | Early 1st c. AD.

Recovered during the 1754-1756 excavations at Herculaneum.
