No I'm not talking about the old rock band here, I am talking about me. I have had a rough couple of years financially mainly because of my health. I was diagnosed with primary Lymphedema last June, its a manageable disease that attacks the Lymphatic system, in my case the lower legs and I am stuck with it for the rest of my days cause there is no cure but its not lethal. At the sweet age of 50 I find myself applying for disability and SSI, but I also find myself in a most awkward and humiliating position; asking for financial assistance. I need to obtain at least $1,000 rather quickly in order to take care of my mounting health bills and rent, realistically this only will put a small dent in the financial problems that I am having at the moment but at least it will stave off the wolves for a while so that I can get back on my feet in order to better generate some income of my own.
   I am offering my services as an artist to any of my fellow DEVIANTS out there who wish to obtain them. I have tried loans but I do not have the greatest credit in the world and the few friends I have have their own probs and families as I am sure most of you do. I can do a variety of subjects and styles , even design  work if needed, you need only view my gallery here on Deviant to see what I am capable of. I am a very prideful man and believe me, If I could in any way avoid this situation in any other way....I WOULD!
  I ask for any assistance in this matter, I guarantee my best work-top quality to any who can help me on this matter. Just let me know what you are interested in having done and I will give you a descent / fair rate for the job, I just ask for any help in digging me out of this hole I currently find myself in.....The best way to contact me is through here, my facebook page; www.facebook.com/surfaceartstu…   or through my email; surfaceartstudios@yahoo.com

If you wish to donate and request your art job through the mail, my address is;

Happy New Year everybody! I know its a bit late for saying that but this is my 1st journal entry of the new year so I thought I would just get it out of the way. 2015 has already had its good moments and bad moments thus far, On the good side my health and spirits are both high and stable, am pretty close to launching my series "Mandi"(after some unavoidable delays) and am generally staying out of trouble. On the bad; am currently unemployed after 3-4 years working at my former job, was unceremoniously let go without logical explanation. My football team was knocked out of the playoffs(Steelers) but they did have a great season and won their division so it wasn't a total loss.
   Even though I am still working on my projects I am also open for commission work, so if you or someone you know is interested in some affordable quality work let me know. My rates are pretty decent, just let me know what you have in mind; to give you an idea of my rates heres a basic foundation;
     single figure pencils; $40.00
     single figure inks; $60.00
     single figure colors; $80.00
Multiple character shots like scenes etc will be a bit higher in price but negotiable depending on the details-paid in advance. I guarantee my top work, highest quality at an affordable price and my quickest response time for completed work(depending on details and current workload). If interested I can be reached here or through my Facebook page-just type in my name Shawn Surface when visiting facebook and if visiting my page at FB please friend me and my Peacenik Press sidebar page.   Hope to hear from you soon, meanwhile I wish all my fellow Deviants a happy, safe, and successful 2015!

Just as titled, this is an update on my 1st creator owned project "Mandi". Due to mainly health issues my timetable on my 1st book's release has been pushed back a bit. Originally slated to be out this summer, "Mandi" #1 will instead be coming out this fall/November. I wanted more than anything for her to come out this summer but the delay was unavoidable and I did not want to put a "rush" on this project-my goal is to put out the best possible final product that I can produce. My health seems to have stabilized somewhat so now I am fully concentrated on getting "Mandi" #1 ready for press and publication. I apologize for the delay and will of course go all out on announcing the release of issue #1 once it is ready.....till then stay tuned and as always...PEACE! :)

Just a short entry to let all my friends know that my legs are fully healed and that I am back on the drawing board.literally!  Its been a frustrating couple of months , and I have had to cancel a few con appearances and fell behind on my work schedule but I'm glad to finally be back and feeling like my old self once again. Back working on the final pages of "Mandi" #1 which will unfortunately be delayed (originally intended for a July release) till late summer with any luck. I will make a grand announcement across all my internet channels once it is printed and available to the public. Again I wanted to thank all my friends and well-wishers out there for the great support and kind thoughts during this painful episode. Now its back to work.......

Well, it wasn't "shingles" after all! I just got out of the hospital after being there for almost a week, and despite the fact that I had a clean bed, 3 squares a day, cute nurses, and some free cable to enjoy, it was quite the painful experience. First off the wonder drug Morphine...is a joke at least for me, really didn't kill any pain just made me sleepy.2nd, I'm what they call a "tough stick" meaning that its hard to locate a vein to take blood or intravenous etc.....so tough apparently they actually had to use an ultrasound machine to guide them to the nearest one. Well, I was finally diagnosed with a form of celluitis called; Lypo Derma Sclerosis which attacks skin cells deep in the tissue, it caused an infection which in turn caused great pain. Doctors looked at it, prescribed the right antibiotics this time and despite having to change my leg dressings daily for the next 40 days everything should be fine and back to normal. Still a bit sore but feeling better already. More importantly I learned that I truly have some real friends who care near me and for them I am truly thankful. I am getting plenty of help and support and I am still gainfully employed and have a roof over my head. One thing I have learned from this painful escapade; as you get older take better care of yourself and be mindful of how you live.....and get health coverage, even if its the minimum-GET IT!
-Peace ;)

Well, not in the romantic sense ...unfortunately, but literally! I have recently come down with a case of the "Shingles", for those not familiar with the term, its a painful re-occurence of the chicken pox in adults and I wouldn't wish this on my near to worst enemies-it usually appears on the torso in most cases, mine has appeared on my lower legs and no where else so I guess I can be thankful for that-but it is still quite painful and not to be too graphic-there is "drainage" involved..(yeah-ewww). But this does occur in some adults in their lifetime-its treatable with antibiotics and good personal care...This has been, to say the least, "disabling" to me in more ways than one....Not only have I had to go on sick leave at both my day jobs-but it has also affected my personal life and my art-in plain-YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING! And I'm in the middle of trying to get my book ("Mandi"-coming out this summer) ready for release not to mention a number of commissions that I need to catch up on and finish. I attended a FCBD(Free Comic Book Day) event at my friends comic shop this past May 3rd, had a great time and it was nice meeting fans and seeing old friends not to mention the opportunity to promote my upcoming projects but man, it was a long and painful day, plus I was draining...:(   Still , I put on a good front and "soldiered" on and survived the day relatively intact. Its currently on the mend (THANK GOD-and modern medicine) so hopefully soon, things will be back to normal-but it has been an experience-one I definitely do not wish to go through again...E V E R !   Heres hoping that you never get it-Peace ;)

Yep, it's that time of year again....FCBD(Free Comic Book Day) makes it's annual appearance in comic shops all around this great beautiful world of ours May 3rd! Once again, free of charge we can dive once more into that four color world populated by magic, scantily clad warrior women, skin tight spandex wearing demi Gods and Godesses, caped crusaders and vile villains of all shapes and sizes. The special day also provides us with the oppurtunity to introduce this truly American art form to the next generation-our children and grandchildren-showing them that there was a world before nintendo and Atari-that the great blockbusters of today spawned originally from the likes of Lee, Kirby, Finger,Kane, Everett and so many others-making our childhood richer in return. Inspiring us all with their cosmos expanding creations, impossible machines, and modern mythos. I am proud to take part once again in the annual celebration as a comics professional and have been for the past 3-4 years now-just a small time little indie artist trying to get his message out there in the comics world, rubbing elbows with the likes of George Perez, John Beatty, and Alex Saviuk this year along with a bevy of fellow local talent spreading the word on their respective genius in hopes of acceptance to their respective creations. For those of you unfamiliar with the event check with your nearest comics specialty shop for details. To the store owners and patrons who visit regularly I wish all a great and succesful May 3rd!

**I also would like to wish everyone and their families a very safe and joyous Easter holiday-for those who do not observe it, I wish you all a safe and happy weekend-Peace. :)

Just now recovering from my experience at MEGACON 2014 in Orlando, Florida. Record attendance numbers-fantastic turnout-all in all a great weekend but tiring, especially on Saturday-but a good kind of tired ,the way all cons should be, and despite some traffic woes, both human and vehicle everything went smoothly at the event, sold quite a few prints, did some sketches, but more importantly helped spread the word on my company Peacenik Press and my projects like; "Mandi" which comes out this July-gave away lots of FREE Mandi cards and people seemed genuinely interested in my little girl character from Crystal River, Florida. Can't wait till next year. Just a reminder for those interested in attending next year's con-get your tables quick because this convention only gets bigger with the passage of time, and tablespace disappears very fast for this show.   My next gig will be for FCBD-Free Comic Book Day at the Coliseum of Comics store, Sanford,Fl. location this coming May 3rd at the Seminole Towne Center. I'll be joined by comics stars; George Perez, John Beatty, Alex Saviuk and many more at the event, will also have some additional cons listed for later in the year and will post as soon as they become official...and of course July is the big month for me for at long last "Mandi"#1 will come out into the world....will keep you updated....till next time-peace!

The south's biggest comics convention is getting ever closer (March 21-23) and I am deep in preparation for the coming event. I am in the middle of designing some new prints which will be debuting at the con this year plus I will have my first official artbook; "SURFACEART 1" available for purchase as well. I will also have some preview pages from my upcoming series "Mandi" available for all to see plus information about my new company website PEACENIK PRESS. All this and my usual affordable custom character sketches all weekend at the Orlando MegaCon....To get more info on the convention, just visit the website at; www.megaconvention.com

"HAPPY NEW YEAR" to all my deviant brothers and sisters out there in deviantLAND! The beginning of another year is upon us and with a new year, new beginnings abound, 2014 promises to be a big year for me as an artist, creator, and buisnessman, it will see the debut of my first creator owned project-"Mandi" released this summer, the launch of a new website for my company Peacenik Press and the release of my first official art book-"Surfaceart #1" which will be premiering this spring at the annual MegaCon convention here in sunny Orlando. The artbook is a collection of pieces I have created over recent years ranging in all genres from the recognizable to original pieces I have designed-in all the book contains nearly 50 pages of material and each copy is signed by me, and is a limited edition. Also the book will soon be available to purchase online. I am putting the finishing touches on coloring for Mandi #1 and it will definitely be making its slated Summer release (May/June-2014). I have a good positive feeling about this and am excited to finally be getting it off the board and into the public eye for all to enjoy. More updates to come shortly including the announcement of the launch of peacenikpress.com and the release of Mandi #1...Till next time-peace be with us all and heres wishing everyone a happy and prosperous 2014. :)

I wanted to take a few to do some shameless self promotion but in reality its for some friends of mine that I have worked with. They have started their own "Kickstarter" campaigns to help fund their amazing projects which will be coming out soon. I'm not asking for you guys to put out a 2nd mortgage on the house or to put the kids up for sale, just to go and check out the links to their repective pages, and if you like what you see either put in a modest donation or help spread the word on these two fantastic products...or do both, any help and support is greatly appreciated; Here they are....

"Ultimate-7" (volume 2) written and created by Robert Wawrzyniak with interior art by me and artist Scott Shoemaker, this is the second collected edition of the 12 part science fiction maxi series (collecting parts 5-8) filled with high adventure, amazingly diverse characters, fantastic worlds and enough epic sci-fi battles that would make George Lucas blush! The volume also features some memorable cover art/pinups by comic legends like; Simon Bisley, Bill Tucci, Mitch Byrd and Mike Ploog so if you dig intense science fiction action and storytelling be sure to check it out. www.kickstarter.com/projects/2…

"Ghoulash; the last game on Earth" is an old fashioned card type game created and developed by Mike Suchcicki and has been around in one form or another since 1982, its a pretty cool, old school game kinda like "Battleship" but with huge green monsters called "Ghouls" who are out to destroy the world and everyone on it. This latest version of the game will be combined with a mini comic (featuring artwork by me) that will set up the premise of the story and profile the main characters that are featured in the story. The game is distributed all around the world and has been translated in several different languages. If you like gaming and comic art please check out the "GHOULASH" page at kickstarter...   www.kickstarter.com/projects/g…

-thanks again for checking these projects out and I hope you like what you see and help spread the word ...Peace :)

"MANDI" UPDATE:

           I am almost finished doing colors on the first issue of "Mandi", my first creator owned book to be released for next Summer. Needless to say I am very excited, everything has gone smoothly with just a few minor bumps(re-drawn pages) along the way, all in all, it has gone quite well, have exercised amazing restraint when it comes to my interior colors....didn't want to overdo it. Soon as the coloring and shading is completed I will concentrate on the dialogue  and captions for the issue. After a brief break then will start on issue #2. The Peacenik Press website is coming along slowly but will have it ready by January. The website will be my official online home to all my creator owned projects and products....I am experimenting with WIX, a program that helps you create your own website by using templates and grids, tricky at first but I seem to be getting the hang of it. As part of the promotion for "Mandi" next year, I will be handing out signed mini-posters promoting her book, you can get a preview of it by checking out my gallery here.

surfaceart.deviantart.com/gall…

 ...stay tuned, more to come. :)

  -Peace

Just a note on my official website; The Surface Art Studios (SAS) is no longer active, nothing wrong or to be sad about really, everything is fine, just came to the realization that as far as my art representation is concerned there was no sense in having two website galleries carrying the same art. DeviantART will now be my official online art gallery for my general works. I still plan to debut a new website centering on my creator owned works (books, merchandise etc...) in January / 2014. The site is for my company, "Peacenik Press" and will be coming soon, I will make an official announcement here and on other forums once it is up and running. At Peacenik Press you will get a more in depth look at my creator owned projects like; "Mandi", "KUDU-MAN", "Z&Z" and many others, including behind the scenes at Peacenik and the Surface Art Studios. Updates and journals on various projects, release dates and convention appearances and schedules by me and Peacenik in the coming year. So please stay tuned for further developments, 2014 promises to be an important year for me as both an artist and creator personally and professionally...Thanks again for the continued support as always........    Peace :)

The art world has lost yet another legendary figure, one whose body of work has touched countless thousands of film fans and has inspired generations of artists worldwide. Mr. Ray Harryhausen passed away at the age of 92, the fantastic artist and visionary who gave us such unforgettable creations as; "the Minoton", "Kali", "Cyclops", "Medusa", "the Ymir", the "Undead Skeletons" from "Jason and the Argonauts" not to mention of course a certain Mr. Joseph Young of Africa just to name a few. I was turned on to Harryhausen's work at an early age as most of us were...as a kid watching monster movies, it always mesmerized me on how realistic his creations were and how seemingly seamless they interacted with the real world. I guess the first time his work really caught my attention was with a little known film that he worked on called "the Valley of Gwangi" which came out in the late 50s early 60s, I've always been a big fan of dinosaurs, and this little gem more than fit the bill in that respect. Learning his craft from yet another legendary artist, the late great Willis O'Brien("King Kong", "the Lost World") Harryhausen went on to have a successful filmaking career that lasted over 50 years, a good body of his work was for American-International films and for producer Samuel Z. Arkoff, the films were often low budget fare which often times suffered from weak storylines and sub par acting, but Harryhausen's fantastic contributions through his artistry and stop motion photography greatly elevated these films, making them instant hits and later on classics. As I got older and read up more on Harryhausen and watching behind the scenes documentaries on his career I discovered how much time, hard work, and meticulous detail he put into each one of his creations, primarily doing all the creature effects work himself. He has inspired many artists and filmakers over the years, most notably Phil Tippet (STAR WARS, ROBOCOP etc.)
  His final film was on the original "Clash of the Titans" which featured, in his own words, his most difficult and greatest creation-the winged horse "Pegasus". His magic predates the age of CGI and to this day his work is featured in film and effects classes. To those too young to know of him or his work I highly reccomend you check his films out, especially if you are a fan of fantasy and adventure-do not deny yourself the oppurtunity to witness the flawless imagination and creativity of this great visionary master, his work will indeed inspire you too.
   Here are but a few of his classics;
         "Mighty Joe Young"
         "Jason and the Argonauts"
         "7th Voyage of Sinbad"
         "Golden Voyage of Sinbad"
         "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger"

"Happy New Year" to all my fellow "deviants", yeah, I know, a little late but still...it comes from the heart. This is my first journal of 2013 and I mainly want to use it as an update of sorts-bringing you the latest from" the house of the Dragon". The big news as far as my company Peacenik Press is concerned and the projects involved is that I will have to regrettably delay the launch  of my first creator owned projects, the original plan was to release my first project "Mandi" this summer with the first issue of "Kudu-Man" coming in late fall. Due to my current workload as both an illustrator and as a regular laborer at my "day job" I've had to scrap that idea in favor of next year, this is mainly to give me additional time to prepare the projects and to get ahead as far as material. Once my books come out I do not want to have anybody waiting forever for the next issue. Unfortunately I am a bit of a procrastinator and a perfectionist, if there is a sin that I am guilty of, it is the sin of "SLOTH", I am just a lazy bastard at times- no excuses, just the way it's been. But I am currently trying to remedy that situation by devoting the remainder of this year and the foreseeable future to my projects and Peacenik Press. So my first creator owned projects; "Mandi" and "Kudu-Man" will not see the bookshelves until summer / 2014-my main goal is to deliver my best in both art and story on these projects, I think I have some unique stories to tell and I wish to get them out for you to enjoy in a timely, professional manner. The official Peacenik Press website will be activated soon, once it is up and running it will be the official home of all my creator owned projects concerning printed materials...I will announce as soon as its fact.
  As far as my very patient friends who have been waiting for commissions.....I am finishing them as well and they will be posted/shipped to you as soon as possible, you guys have been more than patient on this matter and I greatly appreciate that patience. Again I want to thank you all for the continued support and warmth that you shown me here at Deviant, I am really honored to be a part of this special community of gifted creators and will continue to be so.

I will be attending the Orlando Comic Expo this coming Sunday; September 23, 2012 at of course, Orlando, Florida. This is the first year for the Expo and hopefully it will be a hit. I will be joined by longtime Marvel artist Ron Wilson, fellow deviant Tim Townsend, special effects artist Richard Livingston, Bob Wawrzyniak(creator and writer of "the Ultimate-7") and many others.This will be most likely my last convention appearance of the year, just too much work to catch up on, including many commissions long overdue. To find out more about the Expo and who will be there, check out the official site at
  www.orlandocomicexpo.com
FOLLOW UP: Had a great time at the Expo, it had a nice turnout for a 1 day (Sunday) show. Will definitely go to the next one which will be a two day event in May/2013. Met some friends, chatted with some fellow professionals and some deviants like Tim Townsend and Ron Wilson-sold some prints and did a few commissions, so all in all not a bad day. My next Convention appearance will most likely be next year's MegaCon here in Orlando...till then, its back to the drawing board....literally! ;)

Wanted to thank all those who chimed in and wished me "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" tidings, it was real nice of you guys and gals, greatly appreciated. Its normally just any other day for me, its different when your older than when you are a kid obviously...for many reasons. Some friends who live nearby invited me over for dinner, I got somewhat hammered but not too much(had to work the next day) but I did get a nice night's sleep out of it.
    My friends Bob and Anna Wawrzyniak whom I worked with on the sci-fi maxi series "Ultimate-7" a few years back has put together a presentation page over at Kickstarter in hopes of helping to finance their series, true this is me "pimpin" my firend's work, something I actually worked on, but it is also an honest invite to go check there page out and to see what you think, if you like what you see and want to see more, well, it is Kickstarter, you know what comes next. ;)

Also , if you haven't already, check out their official website for the "Ultimate -7" at; www.theultimate7.com

I am also looking to get a renewal of my premium membership package here at DA, I may end up renewing it myself but thought I would give a shout out to anyone who would want to renew it  for me......A FREE commission sketch will be the prize. Thanks again for the birthday wishes....now heres to the start of the rest of my life. :)
