It's nearly been a year since our last PSI! To make up for such a long delay we bring to another installment with much more to follow this summer, with a great interview with a great artist known as arefin03! His work contains amazing still life shots as well as captures of some furry friends. We enjoyed interviewing him and we hope you enjoy reading his responses even more :bademoticon:

Tell us a little something about yourself
I am Ashraful Arefin, 28 years old photographer based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
One Summer's Day by arefin03

When did you start taking pictures? What got you into photography?
I started taking photos back in 2011, I was an art student back then and I bought my camera just to take pictures of projects and artworks. I’ve started doing photography properly when I started doing a 365 project. I just fell in love with photography and found my true passion for it.
A blue dream captured by arefin03

Is dA your favorite place to post your work? What other websites are you on?
Well I don’t actually have any particularly favourite place to post my works, because each community is unique and has been very much supportive to me. Apart from DA I also post my works on 500px, eventually on Flickr and also on my Facebook page.
Springtime by arefin03

Describe your style of photography and what is your favorite kind of photography?
I'd call my style as something very simple, atmospheric and a bit monochromatic. I don't use so many objects, most of the time its only one focused subject. And I also like to use one key colour most of the time for my photos rather than using many colours.
I actually love any good photograph, no matter what the genre is. Many times I got inspired by the photos which are totally different than my genre.
Bottled Dream by arefin03

What is your inspiration for your photos?
I've been very much inspired by the beauty of little things in our lives, so I tend to find simple little things and try to turn them into something special and emotive. I believe that its the little things that make us happy.
The Butterfly Catcher by arefin03

What type of camera, equipment and photo editing software do you use?
I use a Nikon D5000 camera with a 50mm f/1.8 G lens which rarely leaves my camera body. Also sometimes I use Nikon 40mm f/2.8G macro lens. And I use a Victory 3030 tripod. For the post processing I use Adobe Photoshop CS6.
Hello There! by arefin03

If you use photoshop, what’s your favorite tool or adjustment?
I actually experiment with so many tools in photoshop while post processing, but I always use the Adjustment layers and some of the tools I particularly like are Curves, Selective color and Color balance tools.
Cup of Spring by arefin03

What, as a photographer do you find most challenging about taking photos?
Well for me the most challenging part is to shoot photos in public, because I am not very comfortable with the presence of so many people and I lose my concentration easily if there is a noise.
Flying Stories by arefin03

What part of photography do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the whole process of it! I love making plans and preparing for the next shoot, I enjoy every moment of taking photos no matter how stressful it is sometimes...and I love editing them in photoshop as much as I love taking! So yeah for me the whole process is just amazing.
Ocean Memories by arefin03

How do you improve your skill?
I try to take photos regularly to improve my skill. Practice is the key to master any kind of art. And I also try different genres and different settings. I think that's a great way of learning new things.
Snow Queen by arefin03

If you were to give only one tip to a newbie, what would it be?
The one tip would be, Nobody can do it like you will do, so don't think about what your style should be, or if your photos are good enough or people would like them or not... just follow your heart, shoot whatever YOU want to shoot.
Don't I look beautiful by arefin03

What is one accomplishment that you would like to see happen with your photography?
Well, I have some photo ideas in my head which are right now seeming challenging, creating those images would be a great accomplishment for me.
Marigold Days by arefin03

What photograph of yours are you most proud of?
I am very self critical and I rarely get proud for my photos (which is a bad thing I guess), but I was very happy with this one because when I shot this I faced many difficulties, there was a harsh sunlight and I just couldn't get the perspective right. It was a hot day, I was so exhausted and thought of quitting. Then I thought ok maybe I should try one last time, and this time it worked! I am proud of this photo because it reminds me that I didn't quit and kept trying.
Autumn's Arrival by arefin03

Are there any special techniques you use to create your pictures?
I don't use many special techniques, because my photos are already very simple. But I do concentrate about the perspective and the position of light. I try to find the perfect angle from which the light is most beautiful. And also I work on the background, a clean and beautiful background is important to make the subject stand out.
Little boat and summer rain by arefin03

I see you have used several bunnies in your photos! Are they all your pets?
Two of the bunnies (white and one in the cup) are my friend's bunnies. And the brown one named Tooni is mine, and the little black one is her baby.
In Wonderland by arefin03

How do you get the bunnies to stay put/still for your photos?
I don't actually try to make them pose for me. First of all bunnies get scared very easily, its very important to make the bunny feel comfortable. I just stay alert and ready with my camera and follow their activities. They do their cute stuffs and I keep clicking my shutter.
Hi! by arefin03

Do you have any behind the scenes photos or videos you would like to share?
Well I've done some behind the scene shots for my blog, and I plan to do more in future. Here's the link for my blog where you can see them:…
Rainy Ride by arefin03

Is there anything else you would like to say?
I wish all the best to all the artists, especially the newbies. Just believe in your art and yourself and create your own dream world :) (Smile)

We are back after a long break!
Don't know how time flies fast, already half a year passed wow !
Hope the first half was good and the coming is better !

Our Lessons Back !
Enjoy !

As you decided/started to use DSLR cameras, you started to hear about these two terms " Full Frame and Crop Sensor "
You probably begin to wonder which camera should I buy? the cropped or the full frame one and what is the differences, Well you have to wonder and we will clear things to you!

What does Full Frame & Crop Sensor mean ?
The term “full frame” refers to a sensor size that has the same dimensions as the 35mm film format. if we back to the 1900s where there was only one sensor size 35 mm 4mm x 36mm so when we refer to "full Frame" we are pointing at the 35 mm sensor size.  while the Crop sensor simply mean " cropped" smaller sensor than the full Frame one.

Advantage and disadvantage of Full and Crop sensor:
The first deference you would notice is the field of view size, if you use both crop and full frame sensor
and shoot from exactly the same distance and lens you would see that the cropped one shot
would be tighter than the full one.

  Image from

Full Frame is good for low light, because it's allow more lights to come in than the cropped one also it gives a better photo quality, it's perfect to architectural, Landscape, and nature photography.
The other issue is that full frame cameras are far better in low light,
is great in low light and offers some unique image qualities,
The last thing is that full frame DSLRs have a shallower depth of field,
means the area in focus is tighter than the cropped sensor.

What To Buy Full or Crop ?

After all the thing you need to know when you decide to buy a Full Frame DSLR is, the price! The Full Frame DSLR cameras are much more expensive than the Crop sensor ones.
If you're a beginner or have a low budget I recommend to start with a crop sensor, and still you can get a good photos.
There are many great photographers using a crop sensor cameras.

Full Frame and Crop Sensor Lenses:

All Lenses are measured based on the Full Frame sensors,
For the crop sensor, when you buy a lens for example it says 35mm that's mean you will get that focal length multiplied by the crop factor
of your camera for example 35mm x 1.5  (Crop factor for most Nikon cameras) = 52.5mm
And that's mean by buying  24mm Lens that's will give you 36mm which close to 35mm.
