The Smooth Robot

I submitted this piece in my Ryerson Portfolio for the New Media Program. I was supposed to pick from a selection of artists, make something inspired by their work, and write an essay about it.

It's inspired by a series of 3 David Rokeby's Installation Artworks: Reflexions, Body Language, and Very Nervous System. They were machines with cameras that monitored body movement and made sounds accordingly. You can view his works on his site here: [link]

I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson and was so sad when he passed. So since the piece I was basing this on made music through movement, I thought to use a Michael Jackson pose and the smooth criminal hat because when I think music, I think Michael Jackson.

Not totally happy with it, but I think it turned out okay. I like the surreal, cell shaded look of the robot (Except the Ab Speaker which I screwed up and couldn't fix the shading for without it looking screwy). The message on the brick wall says "Move Your Body!"
