Major Tom's Landing by supermanwich23 Major Tom's Landing by supermanwich23
A sudden burst of light and then quick darkness told Major Tom that he was spinning. His head ached. Mostly from the sound of the exploding station, now a piece of atmospheric flotsam adrift in a great black sea. For a moment, he felt that he might drown in all that blackness. It was almost comforting.

But again came the flash of light but slowly- he was spinning slowly- and the light filled his vision, taking the shape of a great sphere as he forced his eyes to focus. He floated helplessly toward it- recognizing it as a moon, but to which planet, he knew not. He touched down, on his elbows and knees, and having been pulled at an angle- skidded along with his own inertia.

He stood. A bit sore, but alive... Fantastic. All around he saw a nearly blank landscape. The only exception being the occasional crater, and even more curious, small patches of red grass... It made it look like plastic or some sort of wiring- the kind you see sticking out of the side-walk to mark pipes and warn people digging into the concrete. Worlds away young schoolgirls had once played jump-rope on that concrete, their bright blue and pink dresses almost glowing in the sun as they played. They sang a rhyme to keep the rhythm of the spinning rope:

My mother said,
"To get things done
You'd better not mess
with Major Tom."

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie.
Strung out sitting at home
hitting an all-time low.

He let the words run through his head. It had been years ago when he'd first overheard them. He knew coming back to the station meant he would never hear them again. And yet here they were- interrupting the conversation with his own thoughts. He tried to change the subject.

Next to the patches, a piece of metal with curious numbers and symbols printed into it. It looked like a license plate carelessly tossed into the sage brush of Death Valley, Nevada (Tom's home) only here the colors were wrong; they had been put through some sort of filter and the feeling was akin to wearing his moms sunglasses which turned objects and landscapes a bleak yellow. As a kid, he would tire of the strange colors and remove the glasses to a refreshing, brighter world.. As he now wished he could. But the colors stuck as he blinked at them.

In a final act of desperation he attempted to finish what he started on the space station. His hands moved slowly to the locks on his helmet. He held his breath- not entirely sure why... your head was supposed to explode from the vaccuum and you choked on your own boogers. Holding your breath wouldn't do a blessed thing- but Tom held his breath.

He felt a choking sensation and closed his eyes- not caring to see his own head turned into a bazooka-joe-bubble- waiting for it to be gone.

A loud sucking noise... a feeling of his head emptying- The contents spilling out into the giant void. Tom tried to shut his eyes tighter, until it hurt. He waited for the nothingness but found only a cold burst of air in his throat.

Perfect... Of all the moons in the infinite cosmos- he would, of course, land on the one with plenty of life sustaining oxygen and no air pressure difference from Earth. Typical. He already knew the universe hated him. Why did he expect to escape so easily? Just over the horizon, the hilly, gray landscape was a bright crown of light- And in the midst he could see great black spires connected by cords.. Telephone poles. Slightly unnerved by the eerie, quiet landscape, he took a deep breath of the cold moon air and walked toward the strange bright lights.

And has he walked, his long shadow followed him.

So, do they smoke grass out in space, Tom? Or do they smoke ASTROTURF (ooh)?
