The Fountainhead

Description

Men have not found the words for it nor the deed nor the thought, but they have found the music. Let me see that in one single act of man on earth. Let me see it made real. Let me see the answer to the promise of that music. Not servants nor those served; not altars and immolations; but the final, the fulfilled, innocent of pain. Don't help me or serve me, but let me see it once, because I need it. Don't work for my happiness, my brothers--show me yours--show me that it is possible--show me your achievement--and the knowledge will give me courage for mine.

-The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

. . .

I recently read the Fountainhead and while I don't agree with everything Ayn Rand says I think her ideal for the artist is spot on. Quite a brilliant novel.

Ever since I read it I've been having this kind of image in my head; a man striving towards the light or creating it. I always get these dramatic kind of images when I'm reading Ayn Rand's work for some reason.

An artist searching for the light; looking for the motivation to do what must be done. I hope I can give myself to the highest ideal of creation as Roark does in the novel but I can't help but fear I'll end up as Keating.

How I love this novel.

"An artist searching for the light; looking for the motivation to do what must be done. I hope I can give myself to the highest ideal of creation as Roark does in the novel but I can't help but fear I'll end up as Keating."
I can't help but wonder if we'd be able to become Roarks. It just seems so unattainable.
And as for Keating...
Poor, poor Keating...I don't quite want to pity him to fear becoming him.
