Might as well show them both! :D

The sassy tuxedo lady is Taliya. I've wanted to raise a kitten for the longest time - it was the first item on my bucket list. I'm a cat person, through and through. And since we moved out of our student home this year, and into an actual house with multiple rooms, and I have only part-time jobs right now and thus lots of time to spend with said kitten, we figured it was time. We got her on July 3rd.
Taliya was named after an alternative Sleeping Beauty in a book I loved as a kid, a book in which white and black cats also played a role. We first met her asleep, not running away from us like her brothers and sisters. Later she turned out to be perhaps the most energetic of the bunch, though. She's not scared of strangers, the outdoors, loud voices or sprayed water. =P She's fond of stealing our food, which she likes better than her own. She makes an effort to steal even vegetables. Right now she's asleep on top of the terrarium next to me, which brings me to the other, newer arrival in it.

The little guy is Nemnem, named for the Egyptian for 'to crawl', Henemnem. Courtesy of MalakiaLaGatta and this awesome page of her Lovecraftian comic: malakialagatta.deviantart.com/….
Nemnem is a Vanilla ball python, the closest to wild type coloration I could find at the reptile convention. All these fancy morphs are really beautiful, but I fell in love with the 'original' ball python a long time ago, when I got to hold one for the first time and put keeping one on my bucket list as wel. Those were the two only pets on the list, btw. Couldn't be happier to have these two youngsters.
Nemnem is also very outgoing for a python, not at all the shy temperament I kept hearing about. No balling, no defensive behaviour, just chill. I'm still giving him time to settle in before a first feeding attempt, though.

Here's to many years with both of them.

Kan best =P i.pinimg.com/236x/c4/b7/6f/c4b…

Aww, die zien echt lief uit. Hopelijk worden ze goede vriendjes. :aww:

Ah, back in the days of my childhood I was one of those that really wanted a snake as I thought they were the coolest creatures at that point. Didn't happen for me but jolly happy to see you have one for yourself.

A cat that steals vegetables? Well... at least it's healthy eating I suppose. :)

Did your parents not approve? :( At least now you're in a position to get what you want. And if you still think they're cool, it's never too late to start :D

Obligate carnivore, yeah right =P I guess the fiber could be beneficial...

A really neat pair. I did notice that Taliya's name did remind me of the older Sleeping Beauty versions, interesting that it's confirmed to be connected. I do hope you're not planning to live-feed Nemnem, as that can get pretty dangerous for snakes.

Hmm, so there was truth to my book? I thought Talia was a one-off name and the author just didn't know about Aurora. (Clunch and I compromised between my Sleeping Beauty Talia and his LoL character Taliyah. =P)
Oh wow, I see now. Talia was the original name, Aurora came from Tchaikovsky's ballet and Disney's version. The more you know!

Nah, that's not me. No unnecessary suffering in this house. Not of the mouse, and not for the snake either. I know how dangerous it can be - I know a guy who lost a freaking boa constrictor to a rat bite. No such risk!

I've originally learned it from a book series by Jim C. Hines, which also included the darker elements of the original tale (the prince raping her and her being woken up by the birth later).
Good to know. Some people think live-feeding is more natural, ignoring that rodents can be pretty dangerous and that an enclosure with little space where everything smells like snake has little to do with a natural environment.

Yeah, Talia was the one that got raped, Aurora was invented for the more family-friendly version. Well, I was always more interested in the originals. They often make more sense, too. Her children sucking the splinter from her finger as opposed to waking from a random kiss.
It might be more natural, but it's natural for snakes to die young, too. And also that. This isn't nature. Oh, and I have no illusions about the two pets being friends. It can happen, I've seen pythons draped across uncaring cats, but when Taliya looks at the terrarium she sees a nice wiggly toy. When I handle him, she leaves the room. =P

Must have been quite the mobile larvae if they managed to get at her finger before starving to death. I also like the Red Riding Hood version, where the wolf just eats her after meeting and that's it.
Yeah, it's better to be on the safe side. This is also why I removed the male orb weaver who seemingly followed the smell of epigyne coming from my curtain. The female orb weaver there is of a different species.

If her display or scent is so similar, couldn't they be closely related enough to interbreed? But if not, good call. You're a good friend to living things. You could be the proper kind of elf.
Ramul's avatar
Interbreeding is prevented by different bulbus/epigyne shape in spiders. He would either be driven away or eaten and if the orb weaver doesn't get him, one of the many cellar spiders might. Also, the day after another male had followed the call, wrong species again (Female is Larinioides sclopetarius, the males were Araneus diadematus and Nuctenea umbratica).
A sociopathic elf with all the grace of a dead badger.

Can confirm that is not the plan, Sun specifically asked the seller if Nemnem already accepted dead food, which he does.

Awww, they both look adorable. I am happy for you :)
Though I have never had the particular inclination to get either a dog or cat (would probably have a bird instead) I know I would easily have preferred a cat as well between those. One of my friends had a litter of kittens when we were young and they were all so adorable. And Taliyah sounds like an excellent little feline wonder :)
Though I have to admit I am super jealous of you for having a ball python :XD: I would love to have one, I just have too much commitment issue to do so, at least for now. But I am glad that you get the joy and he does sound like the perfect little serpent to have and raise :D
Also, in Danish 'nemnem' translates to 'easy-easy' which also seems appropriate :)

:D Thanks!
I think both a cat and a bird might suit you. A parrot would be epic and closest to a phoenix imo, but really demanding and most of all loud, I wouldn't be able to take it. A friend of mine has turtle doves he's practically soulmates with, though. =P
I love her :D It's good to have a buddy while Clunch is away for the day.
Oh, you'd be able to take care of one! They aren't difficult at all. I'm setting up a bigger terrarium, but right now I keep him in a temporary smaller tank with just a small heat mat, a hide and a water dish and he's perfectly happy. If you ever decide to get one, I can advise you! :D
Hah, that describes him alright :D The snek that gave zero fucks.

Heh, optimally I would want a collared falconet, those things are beyond adorable, but you can't really keep birds of pray as casual pets, however small, so something like a green conure would probably be best.
I am glad to hear that, you deserve to have someone to have fun with even when Clunch isn't present, and a vivacious cat seems like an excellent fit :)
Oh, it's not the requirements, its the fact that I am afraid of committing myself to thirty odd years of having a pet, of any kind. Even something as phenomenal as a ball python ^^;
Those are the best kinds :D

Oh my word, those falconets are the best thing. I forget birds of prey can be so cute. :D Awesome choice for a favorite bird. Though yeah, probably impossible as a pet... those conures have a wonderful colour scheme, proper living rainbows.
...Chewing up the furniture and suspiciously eyeing the lamp, calibrating a jump at it... and then walking over my keyboard and batting at my face... vivacious is the right word, as is cheeky =P And people are worried Nem will bite me. The kitten has already done dozens of times the scratch damage a snake could ever do :XD: Though maybe that's on me, I keep offering my hands as toys.
Oooh that, yes, they do get old. Good call if you're not up for that. Though I did see lots of adult pythons up for sale online, from owners that didn't want them anymore or were forced to part with them... exchange is possible and it happens, but a proper 'forever home' is ideal, of course.
I thought I'd grow old with my tarantula, though, and I got him as a surprise. For some reason the idea isn't that hard to get used to for me, and I'm glad I now have another buddy to enter my fifties with =P

They are adorable little things :D
That what I thought. Apparently they are also some of the more lively birds and I know from someone who own one that they have very interesting personalities and quirks, which certainly helps.
Sounds like an awesome little beast :). Well, as long you don't mind her shenanigans and the occasional scratch or bite then nothing is wrong. I had a friend of mine who almost took delight in all the little claw marks he got from his cat, 'affection cut' he liked to call them :XD:
If I should ever decide to get one I would want young one, I would want to be with him/her through their growth. I am happy the idea sounds like an incentive rather than a problem for you, maybe I will get there in time ^^.

Whoo Nemnem! How did you eventually get him out of your sleeve? =P Such a chill guy he is, so cool with handling straight away.

How's Taliya growing, is it fast or not so much? I have no idea how quickly kittens grow :XD:

Heh, he eventually hid his head in it too, had to take off my entire vest. I figured I shouldn't reach in and pull him out, would make him think I was a predator. But still, nothing but chill! He's been rather active today though, I think he might be trying to find food. Perhaps I'll try a feeding attempt tomorrow.
Talli's probably not going to be very big, her mom was tiny as well. She's just a teeny bit bigger than in the picture now, and I don't mind at all =P
Jinjuch's avatar
D'aww, he found a nice hiding spot and you took it away! =P Maybe he is looking for food if he's been extra active yeah, though he really is a very active bugger for a ball python.

Hehe, she'll always remain a kitten to you then eh? =P
Sunjinjo's avatar
SunjinjoHobbyist General Artist
I was getting worried about getting him out! But now I know a method that works, maybe I'll let him stay longer next time, while he still fits =P
Soon as I find ziploc bags to warm a mouse in! But this one might have a bigger appetite than usual, too. Oh... I think I'm seeing him drinking for the first time, now. At least he does that well, that's good. Heh, snakes just lower their heads and glug it up, none of that silly tongue-flicking cats and dogs do. Much more efficient.

Always! Once you've seen something grow up, it seems you can't unsee the little version. Explains a lot about mothers, really. :/
Jinjuch's avatar
Hehe, fun to pull around friends who don't expect it. Sudden sneaky snek!
Snakes have the right idea with drinking yeah, just chug it down, none of that drinking little bits without touching the water with your mouth.

That...does explain a lot about mothers, yeah. Though wouldn't that mean they always see their kids as the annoying noisy poopmachines?
Sunjinjo's avatar
SunjinjoHobbyist General Artist
Luckily most of them wouldn't mind too much... I hope. In any case my parents already love him :D

I think they forget that bit. Rosier in hindsight and all. Or they'll say (also often during said noisy poopphase) that it's all worth it because of what you get in return. *gag*
