The Bayonne Bridge

The Bayonne Bridge links up New Jersey with Staten Island (New York City's 5th Boro) taking Route 440 over the Kill Van Kull. The bridge at one time was the largest steal arch bridge in the world. Pictured here during the beginning of a lifting project to improve clearance problems with freighters coming into Newark Bay. When built, the designers never imagined container ships passing below. Some ships that pass beneath have been known to clear the span by 10 feet or less.
