Well it seems that Gengar used to be a true coward.
But why do people like ninetails always act like it's impossible for somebody to change?

Gosh...

So GENGAR was the one who caused there to be a need for a Pokemon world without humans...

Initial reaction:  GGGRRRRR, GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! YOU - M***********!!!! HOW COULD YOU THINK LIKE THAT TO A LOYAL POKEMON LIKE YOUR GARDEVOIR? You A******!!!

Welcome to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, the Game of Thrones of the Pokémon Franchise in terms of dark and gruesome plots, characters, and scenes. With all the flashback to the RESCUE SAGA, being exiled AND hunted down by EVERYONE, no wonder it sucks to be in those moments. It's all GENGAR's unintentional fault.

But Ninetales, milady, your grudge bearing skills is way too much. Gotta let it go eventually, not hold it forever.

All of this suddenly makes me don't know who to side with anymore. Jen, just return to your human world. If you continue your hunt for Genger, you may as well be a dead pillow Audino then. It's for yoyr safety.

out of curiosity does this game not abide by Red/Blue Rescue Team's post-game mission to bring Gardevoir back? Since it seems almost like Ninetales is acting much harsher. Sorry if I'm wrong, I never played the post-story for Rescue Team, only watched videos if it.
Nonetheless, amazing dialogue, art, and panel-setup once again, I absolutely love this plot.

"growing darkness in humanity's hearts" is the reason you asked for a world without humans? Seriously Ninetails, in the first game, the pokemons went on a human hunt(player) because of a LEGEND, A MYTH(even if Gengar stirred it). Also cursing one person for thousands of years just because he grabbed one of your tails is overeacting.

(Attention this is not directed to your writing)

More seriously PMD one kind of traumatized me when the WHOLE town and exploration teams decided to kill a kid because of superstitions. 0-0 Alakazam, Charizard, Tyranitar I trusted you! Q-Q

Also, great job on this page! The last panel looks amazing (the others do too, don't get me wrong), and I love how you made it!

...Yeah, that sounds like cowardice to a flaw.  I don't know what you're talking about, Ninetails.

Can somebody remind me specifically what happened with Gengar and the others?  I don't remember it being explained in the comic in much detail...

An unspecified length of time ago, there was a human who had a Gardevoir as his partner. He encountered a Ninetales and decided it would be a good idea to touch its tail. Ninetales being what they are, it turned round and laid a curse on him for his disrespect--but his Gardevoir jumped in and shielded him, since it's their thing to sacrifice themselves for their partners. The human fled the scene and nothing more is known of him after that. It was prophesied that the human would be reborn as a Pokemon, while Gardevoir was doomed to be a bodiless spirit for the thousand-year duration of the curse.

Every living being with free will can make a wrong choice. For instance, you could choose to NOT be so vengeful over a freaking tail pull.

My theory on Ninetales is that the reason touching its tails causes a thousand-year curse is because the power in its tails is what allows it to live for a thousand years to begin with, and trying to take that power from it has a VERY unpleasant side effect.

"Its nine beautiful tails are filled with a wondrous energy that could keep it alive for 1,000 years." -- Pokemon Silver dex entry

So you're thinking that Ninetales has no control over the curse?  Interesting thought.

That does put the fault back on Gengar, but it still doesn't excuse the resulting chain of events or Ninetales' current actions.

I'm not saying that Ninetales necessarily has NO control over it; it's possible to touch Ninetales' tails in Pokemon-Amie without it reacting badly (it's just the tips that get it ticked).

But I do think that it's probably a natural reaction for a Ninetales whose tails are grabbed to jump to conclusions. I mean, think of all the poor rabbits and their "lucky" feet, and then imagine if the rabbit was sentient and knew about the superstition.

Given the way certain evil human organizations like Team Rocket treat Pokemon, I don't see how Arceus deciding to seal away a part of the world from humanity was unreasonable in and of itself.

Especially after the creation of Master Balls, although this was obviously far before that time.

But still. Even in the "days" of Ransei (why does everyone think that's in the past when Mewtwo is so obviously there and they even mention another "world" with Poke Balls?), Nobunaga wanted to destroy Ransei because he was so ticked off that people were being cruel to Pokemon.

So I seriously doubt it was only the isolated incident with Gengar that inspired Arceus's decision.

You're right. It wasn't the only incident (you could call it a particularly nefarious example of a growing trend), but it was the catalyst. See VF page 1. :) Also see the Sinnoh myths as written in the Canalave library in DPP, which suggest that in the past a tremendous shift had occurred in human-Pokemon relationships.

Yeah, the original Japanese text of one myth has humans and Pokemon intermarrying.

Which... might explain the human-like egg group.

Alright Arceus created a safe haven for Pokémon because he finally saw that humanity had lots of darkness in their hearts. So basically he created a place no human could be, which leaves a loophole that if said humans were turned into Pokémon then they could be granted access to the region. Hmm... Theory board or conspiracy board...

Could you explain to me how Ninetails is being hypocritical? I mean I think it was stupid to separate humans and Pokemon because of one human KID'S actions, but how is it hypocritical?
Reply
:iconryusuta:
Ryusuta Featured By Owner Oct 23, 2015   Digital Artist
Because he makes a big deal about how cowardly it was for the human to run away and let his Pokemon take the curse for pulling on his tail. All the while leaving out that the Pokemon wouldn't have NEEDED to make that sacrifice if Ninetails didn't curse the human to begin with. Obviously "Forgive and forget" isn't in Ninetails' repertoire.

Personally, I think that part of why touching Ninetales' tails curses people for a thousand years is because it's the energy inside those tails that ALLOWS Ninetales to live for a thousand years.

Perhaps over the years, humans and Pokemon tried to steal that energy from Ninetales to allow them to live longer, and it didn't take long before the Ninetales decided that they had had enough.

Of course, we're talking about a Pokemon that some claim originated from a fusion of nine saints (or nine wizards, take your pick), so they may have mental issues relating to that. Imagine a Ninetales with Disassociative Identity Disorder...

Bit of personal bias coming through I suppose. This whole comic started because Night and I felt Gengar got shat on by fate due to Ninetales being a dick. Disproportionate response much?

To be fair to all involved, Ninetales does pretty much admit ingame that what happened was unfair but Ninetales couldn't help it because muh vengeful nature. At least I seem to recall that there's dialogue to that effect at one point.

My view is that since the energy in Ninetales' tails is what allows it to live a thousand years, people and Pokemon started trying to steal the energy from Ninetales so they could live longer lives, and it didn't take long before the Ninetales got downright fed up with it.

I'd thought of that too. though my idea how it worked was that harming a ninetales' tail shortened their lifespan. And that beings that are supposed to live a long time are especially afraid of dying prematurely. But they never actually explain this to others, so it just looks like a huge overreaction.

I'd imagine that ninetales would be hesitant to explain this to others, as it being public knowledge would put them in more danger.

It's like with the illegal poaching trade drawing from superstition that various parts of endangered animals have some sort of healing powers.
