You CAN do More to Prevent Suicide
Due to her Daily Deviation today, I was made aware of the situation involving Avalik and her untimely death from suicide on October 1st, 2010. I looked back several pages on her profile and found a link to the article explaining the circumstances of her death:

It is tragic whenever anybody commits suicide. It always leaves behind so many questions for their loved ones. Could I have done anything different to help them? In most cases, no, you couldn't, but in this case something could have been done. It's an option most people aren't aware that they have. It is so easy to feel powerless on the internet when you know someone is in trouble and intends to harm themselves.
If you have a friend who is telling you that they want to commit suicide, it is important to take them seriously. Telling people is a cry for help. They don't really want to die. If they did, they wouldn't tell anybody. They're desperately looking for a way out.

Welcome! This is a group specifically to raise suicide awareness and to try and prevent suicide.

I myself don't suffer from severe depression just mild so I've never been at that kind of low in my life. This aside I would like to do my part and help the community. I think I'll dig up some good advice my counselor/therapist has given me for those of you who don't have access to one. I'll see what I can dig up as well for those of you on the other side. I understand a lot of people want to help but for those in the deepest depressions like my husband, there are trigger phrases and things you just don't say to people in crisis mode. These things often can make people feel worse and push them further. I'll post what I can when I can.
p.s. I think another focus people should take into consideration is the lack of help in the healthcare system. It's underwhelming, its sad and its almost like people don't care. In the hospitals, people often endure co-ed floors, harassment, and assaults: sexual or nonsexual. Hospitals are for healing and should be not holding cells like a prison where people don't want to bother with you. Often problem patients become doped and left no real therapy takes place, and in some of the worst places other patients get left alone to deal with the problem.
I think some of the lack of care stems from the jadedness of some, the newness of others, and in a lot of cases the inability to relate to the patient and understand the full gravity of the situation. I think a lot of people are hired into these positions no knowing what to expect in some case in over their heads. We need competent and caring physicians therapists and nurses. People who aren't like revolving doors. Often online and in the real world I see therapists complain about the revolving door patient (look it up) but in reality, in the area, I live in its the opposite. Therapists never stay longer than 6 months. The lack of professionalism is appalling. There is no permanency to jobs or careers. People can't properly receive help if they can't establish a relationship with a therapist and have to start over, again and again, spinning their wheels never actually getting to the healing. We need to hold these people accountable as well. Patients are often charged for being late or missing appointments, I think we need to hold doctors and healthcare professionals to this same standard, its only fair.

A really noble cause and great collection of numbers in various countries to help, I sincerely hope this can help people, I luckily did not live through suicidal thoughts but I know it's a very serious thing and I feel so sorry for anyone who feels they have to go that far.
