X Offender: Ray Carling by suburbanbeatnik X Offender: Ray Carling by suburbanbeatnik
I'm currently in love with the US version of "Life on Mars," now airing on ABC. It combines the old school violent New York cop show, a la Kojak, with the surreal trippiness of "Lost." I'm really digging it, and it doesn't hurt there's a bunch of hot guys starring in it. Jason O'Mara and Harvey Keitel are great, but I really like Michael Imperioli as resident sleazebag detective Ray Carling. I never thought I could find a guy with a handlebar mustache and 1970s polyester suits attractive, but Imperioli pulls it off.

I haven't seen much US LoM fanart here, so I decided to do a pic of him. It started out as a tribute to bad '70s pulp novels, and the composition came from this cover here. [link] Originally, the blonde was supposed to be some femme fatale like Sharon Stone's character in "Casino," and Ray was threatening her. But then she mysteriously turned into Debbie Harry from Blondie, and the old Blondie song "X Offender," which is all about a hooker hitting on a cop, started running through my head. So it seemed only appropriate to turn Ray's scowl into a leer, and instead of a theat, him pulling the gun out of his jacket became his... unique way of flirting with this girl. It seems more Ray now, I think.

I did this with Copic markers and Copic technical pens, with a little bit of colored pencil and some tweaking in Photoshop.

You can listen to "X Offender" here: [link]

And "Life on Mars" returns on January 28th, right after "Lost"! Make sure to watch, it's a great show!

YESSS. Man, I wish that they had given it a chance. IMHO, it was overall better than the British series, though they had a better (perfect) ending. His character was great!

I can't even begin to describe how much I adore this show.
I wouldn't even be able to pick a favorite from the 125, either. <333
This picture is magnificent. There's not even fanart for the US version. ):

Nice picture :D

I prefered the UK version, because it was good alrounf, I like the US version to, but it was very "hit and miss" and the UK finale was written so tastefully and ran into it sister series so well "ashes to ashes" and the 3rd series on that ending everything, was masterful in comparison to the US cliche literal ending -.- the ending on the US version made me fume tbf I wish I didn't watch those last 10 mins.

all the same though, Love ray in this :)

I looooved the US version of LoM for the first half of the season, but then it jumped the shark. Boy howdy, did it jump the shark. I didn't like the ending of the UK LoM, but the US LoM ending was so, so much worse. It was seriously GRAR inducing.

Glad you like the pic! It was kind of funny seeing Imperioli in '70s cop mode again in "Lovely Bones," even though the movie was almost universally panned.

Aha, I thought I recognized the man in this painting! You drew him very well. I've only seen Life on Mars twice. So far it has been interesting.

Yeah, I'll have to watch more of it. It comes on after my favourite show LOST. Speaking of which...both LOST & Life on Mars are on tommorow night! :D

But I suggest putting more keywords on it when I put in Annie Norris nothing came up,
I said what the hell? No Norris fan art???
Thanks for proving me wrong (Though I'm still posting one of my own)

Oh, re-read our comments, I assumed it was Annie because of the hairstyle and blondeness even though this would be totally ooc, oh well
still an excellent piece!

I'm looking forward to seeing your own LoM fan art! Is it going to be up soon?

It looks great, both as a tribute to Life on Mars and as a homage to 70s pulp art. The colours are completely perfect, and I think it works really well that he would be flirting with her. :D

This is really neat, and reminds me that not all TV is evil. (Your description makes me want to download this...)

The poses are excellent, but I especially love the little detail on the side where the smoke from her cigarette interrupts the edge of the frame!

Love the 70s look and the crosshatching, though. You really pulled the mood off. =)

The UK version is good, but the US version has New York, in all its seedy magnificence!

Glad you like the drawing. I am so glad I don't live in the '70s- the age of polyester and elastic-waisted bellbottoms. Ick! :)

Did you know there's going to be a Spanish version of LoM soon, set in Madrid in '78? I'm actually looking forward to that!

I'm glad too - I'm currently working my way (very slowly, I can only take so much at a time) through the dvds of Jason King. The costumes are definitely ick-worthy! *shudder* ;) I did a google search, but the pictures don't do full justice to the horror!

Good heavens! When it's out I'll have to see if I can find pictures, to see what it's like (we don't get such things on tv here). It certainly does sound interesting!

I had never heard of "Jason King" before you mentioned it, so I googled it, watched a few clips on Youtube, and... OMG! I am now traumatized. That guy looks like he was beaten by a fugly stick. I can't believe he was considered hot once. I had to watch Patrick McGoohan in "The Prisoner" just to wash out my poor eyes.

"Life on Mars" (US) is soo awesome... you can buy it on iTunes, if you like, or d/l the torrents of the episodes on EZTV. [link]

Here's some more info about the Spanish version. It looks super cool too. [link]

It's awful, isn't it? I watch a lot of the old 60s/70s tv shows while I'm doing digital painting, (since they don't require much brain power =P) and I hadn't actually gone through 'Jason King', though my father picked it up quite some time ago. But while I can spend all day happily painting and watching, say, 'The Saint' or 'The Avengers', I think my record for 'Jason King' is two episodes at a time.... ;)

Thanks for the info! =)

Have you ever seen "Sapphire and Steel" with Joanna Lumley and David McCallum? That's a pretty cool show, sort of like Doctor Who, but more surreal and cryptic. [link]

No problem, I hope you check out the show at some point. I intend on watching the original LoM when I have the chance. So much great TV to watch, so little time... :XD:

Unfortunately, no. =( In addition to 'Jason King' I'm working through Ngaio Marsh's 'Alleyn Mysteries' and complaining about the casting. =P

I hope you do! My mother and I really enjoyed it (My father got confused about episode one, and stopped watching - his loss! ;)) and we're now waiting for 'Ashes to Ashes' to make its way here....

Copic markers are great! Prismacolors look cheesy to me, but maybe I associate them with the years I was doing ad comps. With Copics, you can get more sophisticated colors and effects- you can make them look as painterly as you like, esp. if you work with watercolor paper. Of course, it doesn't beat paint, but a lot of times I had an image in my head I wanted to knock out, and getting out my paints would slow me down.

Anyways, glad this made you laugh. What did it- was it Ray's clown tie, or all his hair and trucker mustache? :XD:

It was just the whole idea of its being a tribute to Life On Mars - plus the parody of all those novel covers. :giggle:

He looks vaguely Depp-ish [I know nothing about LoM, though, haha.]

Thank you! :)

He does kind of remind me of Depp in "Blow"... but then he also reminds me of a really young Dan Ackroyd. You can behold Imperioli here, in his full shaggy splendor: [link]

I don't know Life on Mars, but I know art!

Nicely done. You pulled off the '70s vibe nicely - like the background being that tacky brick-beige from the era. ;)

I am very proud of the horrible brown background. Although I am sad I could not fit in harvest gold shag carpet. Bow chicka wow wow!
