The Magician's Nephew by suburbanbeatnik The Magician's Nephew by suburbanbeatnik
This is a promotional image I did for my agent's fall mailing, to prove I could do fantasy art. For my subject, I chose "The Magician's Nephew" by C.S. Lewis, and illustrated the moment when Jadis shows a horrified Digory and Polly the ancient and ruined city of Charn.

It was fun to do, if challenging. Between the red giant/white dwarf star system described by Lewis and the Babylonian architecture that I used for Charn, I figure this painting could also be called "Space Babylon."

My studies for Jadis can be seen here. [link]

I have always been inspired by that passage of Magician's Nephew, and your illustration captures the feel of what I've always seen in my head.

Wow. That's all I can say: wow. Actually, I can say more than that. XD It's magnificent, exactly how I pictured Jadis when I read the book. You pwn Disney.

Oh... that part of the book always gave me the heebie-jeebies. Jadis is such an awesome villain that it's hard to do her justice in depiction (it's like Homer never actually describing what Helen looks like, the reader constructs her image in their mind). Everyone has a different idea of what she should look like (and I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who thought the movie version was LAME), but I think you've done a wonderful job of catching the seductive beauty that doesn't quite hide the sadism and malicious intent that lies beneath. Her costume is gorgeous and I love that you pulled in ancient jewelry inspiration to go along with the Babylonian architectural reference. And I was just thinking the other day that I needed to reread these books...

It's nice to see some book art on this site that isn't Harry Potter for once.

Thanks for another fabulous comment- you so rock! The movie version WAS unbelievably lame (and there are quite a few people here on dA who think so too). Charn was one of the most amazing settings in the Narnia books- it was so cold and frightening, with sci-fi and ancient historical elements mixed to a really amazing effect. It's too bad Lewis didn't use Charn more often... IMO Narnia seemed pretty flat after it.

And yes, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one tired of Harry Potter fanart... ;P

That's my favorite book in the Narnia Chronicles, and I love Jadis.

Very nicely illustrated, esp. well done on the background and Jadis herself.

Yeah, I did pages of sketches before I finally settled on a Jadis that I liked. Apparently C.S. based her on "She" from the H. Rider Haggard novel, crossed with the Queen of Babylon from Edith Nesbit's "The Story of the Amulet." So I did Jadis' costume as a mix between art nouveau, ancient Babylonian/Hittite/Phoenician and the French video game "Salammbo" (based on the Heavy Metal comic from the '80s). I don't suppose you'd be interested in seeing the studies I did of her? I've been debating whether I should put them in scraps for the past week or so..

Still, I've told you before: if I ever get my hands on one of your books I'm definitely gonna buy them. Not that you'll get much money from that though.... Hmmm....

Oh I love this soooo much. Jadis looks so Babylonian, yet so Alien too. The Jewelry is gorgeous, and the pillar behind her is wonderful in it's hideousness. I especially like how red the city looks. It's a vibrant colour and yet embodies the cold, dead nature of the place. And to think one Unspeakable Word did it all.....

This is phenomenal Joanne! I detested all the books BUT this one and I couldn't have imagined anything thing any different. The colour, shading, and DETAIL is outrageous. Jadis is my favourite (but I love Polly's expression)...

Thanks! I love Jadis in the book, she's so kick-ass. I think Narnia must have sucked the life out of her.... she's so different (and let's face it, not half as cool) in her "white witch" mode.

And Polly's expression was a bitch to do... but I looked at a lot of old Nancy Drew covers for inspiration. :D

I definitely hear you on her new look later in the books! Nothing could compare to her vibrancy, which you got perfectly.

And Nancy Drew? Now that I look at it I can make the connection!!

I was especially inspired by the covers Rudy Nappi did for the Nancy Drew series through the '60s and '70s... the compositions are really quite sophisticated and atmospheric. (The earlier, non Nappi covers tend to have cheesy colors and have an overall Bobbsey Twins vibe.) [link]

I took a look and Nappi's covers are have so much more to them! Very atmospheric and, lets face it, the art is better. The colours on older versions (which I have in my possession one or two), are classically 50's. Very bright, tacky...and seizure inducing o__o. Thank goodness for updates!

I love that book. I was (and still am) such a narnia freak and get so upset when people only remember the Lion the Witch and the wordrobe.

I love the colours in this. I'm thinking the woman is Jadis right? People forget she was colourful and vibrant before she was the Witch. Lovely so I had to fave it.

*sigh* it just makes more things to draw. now I have to do Narnia pictures.
