The Fox Meets Sickle by suburbanbeatnik The Fox Meets Sickle by suburbanbeatnik
Here's another illustration I did for for Chris Dabnor's story, "The Fox Meets the Bear," for Astonishing Adventures Magazine #8. In this, dashing English spy called 'The Fox' has his first encounter with Soviet agent Sickle. Love at first knife, so to speak.

You can read Chris' story and see my artwork in AAM #8.
It's now available at Mediafire- [link] - and issuu. [link]

I modeled Sickle loosely on Milla Jovovich, and the Fox on Ryan Cartwright, of Bones and Mad Men fame (esp. since I was watching so much of Mad Men when I was working on this). You can see the original character sketches here: [link]

I think Chris should totally write a romance between these two. What do you think?

I'll let Chris the author know! He's working on a sequel, last I heard.

Haha, Fox is definitely handsome. ;P How is the Fox based loosely on Ryan Cartwright? Is it just the outfit?

I don't think Ryan's ever been in a movie set in the '40s. [link] But he looks very cute in a fedora.

Oooh, very film noir. Wicked contrasts on the two people, but the background somewhat looks flat, even black has a tonal range. Love their expressions.

Love at first knife, indeed. :)

Thanks! Yes, I wanted it to be very noir. I really like how the characters turned out, even though I didn't do much with the background. Do you like the guy's hat? ;P

Totally! Hats are tricky to do.

Oh my yes! It took me many years of practice for me to get the fedora down. I'm glad you like it.
