Tanit by suburbanbeatnik Tanit by suburbanbeatnik
This is the cover for the first issue of Dark Valentine magazine, an online magazine dedicated to dark fiction. This painting depicts Tanit, moon goddess of ancient Carthage-- she's something of our patron saint over at DV. It was inspired by Stephanie Dray's short story, "The Threshing Floor," featured in the magazine.

It was exciting working with so many great writers and artists-- many of whom are here, right on deviantArt. You can download the magazine for free here: [link]

Beautiful work... Just finished "Salammbo" by Flaubert and I must admit I can feel the same atmosphere in your picture. Clap

Wow, thanks! I love that book. It's kind of racist, but so beautifully written. I think of it as a vaguely historical fantasy, for the most part.

Alphonse Mucha inspired this pic too; that's where I got the dress style. I'm glad you like it!

BTW nice hipster Nero icon. :)

I love this piece - the colors are so rich and just glow. The 'circling heavens' effect around the moon-as-halo makes the whole image seem to vibrate with this great energy. Also - its just really really pretty.

I knew I recognised your style! *janey-jane was pimping the magazine, and I saw the cover and though, That art looks awfully familiar.

You have a clearly recognizable and distinct style!

...and it is a really pretty piece. lovely colors.

Overall, I actually think this is one of your best. It could just be that I'm a total sucker for symmetrical, quasi-religious poses and nighttime color schemes... but I dig it a lot. ;)

Thank you! I got the pose from Mucha's "Salammbo"... but the effect is more deco than nouveau, I think.

beautiful! The night sky looks like its swirling around her and the moon could almost be a gloria. It really is a good version of Tanit.

Is it made with colouring pencils?
