Steampunk Girl by suburbanbeatnik Steampunk Girl by suburbanbeatnik
Here's a character design for an upcoming Facebook application, set in a steampunk apocalyptic world. The game designers are really excited about this game, and so am I!

Drawn with Copic markers, which are pretty awesome to work with. Any ideas as to what this character should be called?

EDIT (7/2010): Guys, I'm sorry to say that the game has been canceled. Perhaps it may be revisited one day. But it looks pretty much DOA.

A steampunk apocalyptic world?
Could you, by any means, be referring to Echo Bazaar/Fallen London?

No, this was some other game that was scrapped fairly early on.

You looking for a character name? Well, she reminds me of one of my old D&D characters. Her name was Jazira. Feel free to use it. The last name should probably be one of those names that's a combination of two common English words, like Lockheart, Rosewood, or Starglow. Such a name usually conveys a sense of solemn propriety, which is written all over her face, along with other, more subtle aspects of her personality. Nice work.

Well, we're not looking for a character name now, since the game has been canceled, unfortunately. But thank you for your suggestions. Jazira sounds a bit too similar to the Al-Jazeera news network to me, but the last name Lockheart is cool.

You could call her "Wilhelmina" because she was modelled after Mina Harker. Mina or Willie could be her nickname...

I agree that Copics are awesome. I love using Copic & watercolours together. Nice Steampunk design! She looks like she can fit in with my steampunk characters Schuyler & Faythe. :) I think it's wonderful that you are doing illustrations/character art for a game! That's really amazing!

How cool is that? Every time I see steampunk, I want to be a part of it so badly. Like dress up in serious costume and go to a con, or join a guild.

Sigh, I have to say bustles are topping my favorites list.

As for names, I'm coming up blank, but I am dying to know what you choose!

I am not that crazy about bustles, really, but rewatching Aiko's costume designs from the '92 "Dracula" makes me understand their appeal!

Re: the name, the lead designer has a favorite, but he needs to check in with everyone else before any decisions are made.

Watch out for more steampunky goodness here! :D

I just saw Dracula the other day, and I know exactly what you're talking about.

There was one dress in Age of Innocence that took my breath away -- it was this bold, black and striped piece.

Funny how Winona Ryder was in almost EVERY period movie at that time.

Kind of like Keira Knightley now, except that Ryder actually looked period...

I actually downloaded "Dracula" so I could drool over the costumes. I have a VHS of it too, but that's just not very handy for spontaneous viewing.

The costumes in "Age of Innocence" are amazing, aren't they? I think very highly of Martin Scorcese. His production design and art direction are top notch on all his films.

Winona Ryder, where art thou? She's descended into kleptomania, I'm afraid. She was recently lent some extremely valuable jewelry, which has since mysteriously disappeared. Interestingly enough, this is not on her wiki page.

Mmm. I netflixed it the other day. I think I may have to get a copy for home, though. Honestly, Gary Oldman is the sexiest man alive... without that strange butt hair.

Winona, Winona. I knew that shoplifting incident years ago wasn't going to be the end of it.
