St. John Rivers sketches by suburbanbeatnik St. John Rivers sketches by suburbanbeatnik
I haven't been able to do much lately, since I've been really sick. But here are more sketches of St John Rivers, the chilly and zealous missionary character from "Jane Eyre." I like them better than my last drawing of him-- [link] -- now in scraps. I wanted to make him look more youthful and energetic, even though, in one friend's words, he still looks "like he has a pinecone up his bum." Ah, St John-- I find him strangely endearing.

I'm not sure who the girl behind him is. She might be Rosamund Oliver, the girl he loves from afar-- or she might be somebody else...

He's beautiful, I love it so much! There's hardly any good St. John fanart online, I'm so glad to have found this. I'm oddly fascinated by this man.:)

I understand. He's annoying and a pill, but a compelling pill for all that...

I love your picture of St John. I find him quite interesting but I was so annoyed by his actions :D (Big Grin)

oh finally. I've always seemed to be the only person that was oddly fond of St. John.

There's a few of us out there! Have you heard the musical "The Book of Mormon"? The song, "You and Me (But Mostly Me)" reminds me rather scarily of St John. [link]

Thank you! Actually, I think she's someone else. Maybe I'll tell you guys later who she is. ;P

So you dig the 1830s? That's awesome! Not a lot of people like that decade...

Oh-ho-ho... A secret lady, huh?

I love the 1830s! The puffy sleeves! The weird top-knots! The shoes! It's greaaaaaat. :D I don't know why most people don't like it. I guess it's the sleeves.

Yes, she is a secret lady... :D

Now I'm tempted to draw a bunch of Jane Eyre sketches for fun. It's a bit annoying that Rochester is always portrayed as devastatingly handsome, and Blanche Ingram is given blond hair... urgh!

Truthfully, I've never read Jane Eyre. I saw an older film adaptation that was... creepy and depressing, so that kind of dissuaded me from picking it up.

It was made in the 1960s, I believe. I don't remember who was in it... I just know that everything seemed very dark. It was very gloomy up until the end, which even then had a sort of depressing gravity. Haha. I guess I should pick up the book before I judge it.

This wasn't the one with Timothy Dalton, was it? Or did it have George S. Scott?

St John is indeed such an interesting character (though I don't find Rochester irritating, quite the contrary; he's - ehm - my favourite "ideal husband" in XIX cent. novels). I like his blue eyes here, they really stand out.

Well, I think he was an ideal husband for Jane, but not for me. :)

Thanks. I like how his eyes turned out too-- all icy blue and determined-- ha!

I love the colors on him here. You're definitely pinning down that fierce "avenging angel" look we talked about. Brava! :D

I couldn't help but think of your story last night as I was at the movie, and I got kind of excited about it. XD...though, I think I took it a bit too cannon, because I kind of have expected the movie to end with the "I'm going to diiieeeee, but with God!" letter...and then, you know, the rest of what we'd discussed.
