Skullcrusher Mountain 4 by suburbanbeatnik Skullcrusher Mountain 4 by suburbanbeatnik
EDIT: Dark Valentine Magazine is no longer around, but you can read the novella here: [link]

You can also download the PDF here: [link]

This is my fourth illustration for Christine Pope's novella, "Welcome to Skullcrusher Mountain," a fun and loopy love story which was serialized on the Dark Valentine website for Halloween. The novella is based on the cult fan favorite song “Skullcrusher Mountain” by Jonathan Coulton about a mad scientist (is there any other kind?) who falls hard for one of his victims-- although Jenna Masterson, the kidnapped reporter, is more than a match for the scientist in question.

This is from the fourth chapter, when Dr. Black surprises Jenna with his very special gift of a ponkey. What's a ponkey, you may ask. Well, to quote the song:

I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you
But I get the feeling that you don’t like it
What’s with all the screaming?
You like monkeys, you like ponies
Maybe you don’t like monsters so much
Maybe I used too many monkeys
Isn’t it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

That's a ponkey. I hope I captured its essential horror.

Oh well. In my mind, it's definitely enough just to know you ruined a pony making a gift for me :3

Is that a sad face, or a frightened face?
