Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Here's Belle, the winner of my "historically accurate Disney princess" poll! She's wearing a 1779-1780 robe de cour, based on one worn by Marie Josephine of Savoy. I left off the train, and gave her a softer 1780s English hairstyle, like what you'd see from a Gainsborough portrait, since that seemed more suitable to her character, and closer in feel to my previous 1780s Belle piece. [link]

It was a bit of a challenge coming up with a dress that was similar in feeling to the design in the original Beauty and the Beast, but I'm pleased with what I came up with. I know that ball gown was supposed to be gold, but it looks banana yellow. I prefer this style to what she wore in the film, but hey I've always been a big 18th century fan, if you couldn't tell...

wow im genuinely impressed for a moment i though maybe it was a prima pencil/marker combo but then i though it could be gouache. I really am impressed i took a color theory class and my painting was terrible....i can probably mix all the color you used but i would never be able to paint the picture so good job!

I love the 18th century as well! I wish Disney would make an animated film set in that era; that would be so awesome! Belle looks beautiful in this, it really suits her!

It was pointed out to me recently that BATB actually was originally supposed to be set in the 1770s-1780s-- there's an alternate opening that was storyboarded that was far more era specific. Interesting, eh? You can watch it here: [link]

Though I love this design, I'm kinda happy they did Beauty and the Beast the way they did. Still, Disney should make a film set in that age.

Well, it's not an original idea-- it's been done quite a few times before-- but I do know a lot about costume history so I figured I'd do a good job at it.

Thanks! :)

LOL, that's from "Start the Revolution without me"! I haven't seen that movie since 1997... on VHS! Wow, that takes me back...

So, why does it remind you of my pic? I hope my version of Belle doesn't remind you of "Start the Revolution"'s Marie Antoinette. ;P

It was just the dress. That's actually one of the most fabulous 18th century dresses I've seen in a movie ever, really...

Anyway, I love your Belle. I think I more prefer the earlier style of court dress with the simple bodice and train, before they went all hog-wild in the 1780's with the flowers and massive swags of fabric etc. but you executed it beautifully, comme toujours! I swear, I will learn to color as well as you one day...

That is a really nice costume. It's surprisingly good costume for 1970.

I'm so glad you like Belle! What year would you say that fashion plate is from, the one of Marie Josephine of Savoy? 1779 or 1780? I decided not to use any of the later 1780s court gowns because, like you said, they were getting way, way too fussy.

I don't think I have quite the expertise to make that differentiation! At first I thought, based on the hair, it could be 1779, but then I'm not sure when the hedgehog firmly replaced the pouf. Queen of Fashion states somewhere the last time Marie Antoinette was seen in public sporting the pouf, and I want to say it was in 1779, although it could be slightly later. Since Marie Josephine was a fellow royal, I feel that if it was 1779, that could be a good indicator.

I wish I had my copy of Galerie des Modes with me... a number of 1780 fashion plates, I remember, still had poufs, though I think they might have been getting wider and fuzzier. But it's in storage... *sighs*

But yes, my (very) early 1780s Belle! I'm personally a bit tired of that decade, since it seems to be the main decade depicted in 18th century movies, but hey, it suits the character. I can't see her in the 1710s or 1730s, can you? :)

Just flipped through mine, and yes, there are many an early 1780's pouf, I'd say up to about 1783. So I guess we'll never be sure!

And no, I can't see her in those decades. She rocks her decked-out court dress. No mantuas for her!

So awesome! I really like the look of this, and the design of her dress! Plus, she looks perfect! We did Beauty and the Beast last Summer, and ours was definitely Rococo, rather than just the film. It was a blast! I think it just works so well!
