Regency Hat Girl by suburbanbeatnik Regency Hat Girl by suburbanbeatnik
I did this colored pencil drawing for my friend Alea, who writes the great blog Pop Culture Junkie. She used it for a contest/giveaway, "What is Regency Hat Girl thinking?" You can read the responses here:

--"As soon as his Lordship looks my way, I'll lower my eyes, blush prettily and then glance shyly in his direction. I only pray that my encouragement will not be intercepted by another! If so, I shall then faint daintily, and his Lordship will act as a gentleman and come to my aid. Wait! Perhaps he would send someone else to assist me...someone totally unacceptable! What if I accidentally tripped someone just as they approach his Lordship? Then he and I could assist the victim together! Aha...there's goes someone now...a slight slip of the slipper...he's down! Oh, La! It's his Lordship's father!" (Courtesy of Virginia C)
--"My haberdasher designed this hat so that I would permanently hold my head at a proper, demure angle. But I like to add a coy smile." (Courtesy of Liviania)
--I hope he notices me and will ask me to dance tonight at the ball. I bet my new dress will be just thing to catch his high. It's simply perfect. (Courtesy of jennifer aka yabooknerd)
--When he proposes tonight I'm saying yes! (Courtesy of Clenna)
--She is wondering why she is wearing such a big purple coat over such a beautiful, expensive and too revealing dress! (Courtesy of Meredith Miller)
--Mmmm....bacon. (Courtesy of april yedinak)
--She is definitely thinking something sassy, she's got that saucy look in her eye. She's thinking, "I wonder how long those men can resist the allure of my fabulous purple coat and my regency hat." (Courtesy of Sarah Wright)
--How fortunate that no one can read my thoughts, or they would no longer perceive me as a lady. (Courtesy of Laura Hogg)
--She's thinking she looks fabu in lavender! (Courtesy of Savi Malfitano)
--"She just flirted with a male aquaitance she met on the street and wasn't as all scandalized (Courtesy of Bonnie P)
--"Aaack! How much longer do I have to stay still?
'Dont move a muscle' he says 'Or the painting will be ruined' Well I've been standing here for hours!
'I heard you were perfect to work with, I had no idea you would be like this'
What did he mean 'like this'?
I'll show HIM perfect... hmph" (Courtesy of Liz)
--Wait til you see my dress! (Courtesy of Allison)

Virginia C won the contest, and got the Mary Balogh book that Alea was giving away. I can see her thinking those thoughts, can't you?

The winning response is amazing.

As for the picture, it's so great seeing something this beautiful that's not computer-generated, for once - most of the really pretty stuff these days seems to be painted on one program or another. I love everything about this picture - the colour choice, the shading, her posture and delicate hand placement, the detailed simplicity of the whole thing. It's wonderful.

Thanks for the lovely comment! I wish I knew how to paint digitally... that's something I need to teach myself. I'm just kind of lazy... and I know it will take forever to produce anything decent. I did this pretty quickly in my Moleskin sketchbook with my trusty 20 year old Prismacolor colored pencils and a Sakura white gel pen. I guess I like to rock it old skool (or something). :XD:
