Rabadash by suburbanbeatnik Rabadash by suburbanbeatnik
Here's Rabadash, spoiled Calormene prince and epic idiot, from "The Horse and his Boy" by C.S. Lewis. My notes read, "So here's my attempt to draw Rabadash... I bet he looks way more dignified and elegant than CS imagined him."

Epic idiocy asides, I figured he had to be pretty hot to make Susan Pevensie go so crazy over him.

I will say here and now that I would very much love to see more (much more!) of your rendition of Narnia and neighbours in it's vicinity, but will content myself with what you have produced to date until you feel in the mood to draw more - because (a) it is an artists right to chose their own subject (unless they're being paid to think otherwise and to a degree even then) and (b) for the reason that what you have produced to date is very excellent!

I must admit that 'The Horse and his Boy' is my favourite novel in the Narnia-centred series, not least due to Aslan's MAGNIFICENT put-down of old Rabadash 'The Peaceful' (aka Rabadash the Ass, albeit it's probably best not to use that one to his face, even if he IS a braying fop of a bullying prince!); the question of why such a fine source of inspiration for a film has yet to be adapted really does vex me sometimes.

Yes I do love my Narnia. (Rabadash/Susan 4EVA) Anyway, I'm booked at the moment with paying work, but if you ever want to commission me on some Narnia related piece, I would definitely be open! :)

I shall press my nose still more firmly against the grindstone to scratch up the necessary ready cash!;) (Wink)

(Also set myself to working out just what I would most like to see drawn up - I admit that this might not be Narnians, but quite possibly will be).Nod

I should also point out that Lucy, Peter and Edmund would probably take glee in sinking that particular ship - quite probably with Susan's help (because let's face it, Rabadash really IS a prize ass!).

I enjoy the moniker "Epic idiot". This is still probably the best depiction out there of him, imho. And yes...yes, you probably were a lot kinder to him than C.S. Lewis. XD

Why thank you! But then, as you know, it really wouldn't take much to be kinder to poor Rabby than Clive was... ;P

You drew Prince Rabadash! :D
Personally, I thought he'd be even better looking, but this is nonetheless a fantastic interpretation. Poor guy, I always thought if one could peel off the layers of Lewis's bigotry, he could be a very compelling character.

Oh, I totally agree! I would have loved to have seen more done with him (and Calormen in general), but he's relegated to just being an exotic antagonist, which is sad.

What, you don't think my version of Rabadash is attractive? ;P

It's a long time since I read the book, but isn't he described as handsome? Also, it's pretty evident that he starts to show up his less charming sides when Susan comes to Calormen. When he visits Narnia he seems to have behaved good. :-) I like Susan too, and i don't think she is such a fool. Lots of people, however smart they are, falls for someone who they eventually realize is an ass. And Susan got it way before they got married.

It's a very nice drawing, I think.

Good thing she didn't get married... that would have been very awkward when she went back through the wardrobe and became a kid again. :D

Thanks... I'm glad you like the pic!

Why epic idiot? (I don't know the story, sorry. In the drawing he seems pretty decent).

But... but I thought Susan utterly hated him? Or am I missing some kind of subtext here? XD (Subtext in NARNIA?! :iconlegaspplz: )

Wonderful drawing! It almost looks like you got him to sit down for a live sketch! =D

Well, she originally had the hots for him, which is why she visited him in Calormen. Remember Edmund's charming remarks to the effect of, "If you had married him, I would have loved you less?" (Yes, that's exactly what I want to say to my siblings when they marry someone I dislike.)

I'm glad you like! This was something I dug out of an old sketchbook. :)

Definitely hotter than he was in any illustration I've seen of him. I'm with =BlueBumbleBee that there should be more Horse and His Boy, but then again, I up for more Narnia in general. :D

Yay, I'm glad you think he's hot! He is kind of an overdressed ponce in Pauline Bayne's illustrations... it's hard to see what Susan saw in him to begin with, but she is supposed to be the silly girly sister, I suppose. :P

Indeed. But then again, she wasn't smart enough to keep believing either. So I suppose it's in character.

I actually like Susan a lot, and I find the whole ';problem of Susan' pretty interesting... I do not like how Lewis got rid of her in "The Last Battle." It always left a bad taste in my mouth, even when I was a kid.

I was so depressed about it (we read the whole series in my fourth grade class). I just couldn't understand how she could just deny it. Anyways...I digress. But looking picture. :D

Ah, the handsome scoundrel. Doomed to be an ass. I like how pouty he is. Could probably look even more snotty, but it's still a lovely attempt.

There needs to be more Horse and His Boy art on this site!
