Peggy and the Junior Ad Men by suburbanbeatnik Peggy and the Junior Ad Men by suburbanbeatnik
I just finished this piece of fan art for the great new show on AMC, "Mad Men." For all those of you who haven't seen it, I urge you to start watching it! It's a brilliant look at the lives of ad men in 1960 New York. It's stylish, smart, and character driven; I also get a kick out of it because as an illustrator and designer I've worked with my share of ad people, and all the stuff about brainstorming and the continual cat fights and competition rings (at least for me) hilariously true. (New episodes can be watched on Thursday night at 10, and older episodes can be downloaded on iTunes, or here, at EZTV [link] .)

In this piece, Peggy- the earnest new secretary, played by West Wing's Elisabeth Moss- is surrounded by preppy account guy Pete (Vincent Kartheiser on the left) and intellectual copy writer Paul (Michael Gladis on the right), with Ken, another account guy, to the left reading about maples and Harry, a media buyer, brandishing his lollipop to the right. I'm quite amused by all these dudes- I find them so endearingly geeky. I'm quite fascinated how all of them are dressed perfectly for the period, down to the unflattering greased back hair.

This is such a great picture (and the first fanart I've seen of this programme yet) - I really like your impression of Paul.

It's much to negative a show for me to get into, but the picture is lovely. Fantastic job!

Glad you like it! I guess the show isn't for everyone, but I'm obsessed by it. All those skinny ties and beehives... whee!

The best part of this is the subtle inside jokes from the series, which is just newly born and yet already filled with excellent character development.
